Three simple and easy ways to overwinter you’re Brugmansia (Angel Trumpet) plants. It is easy to help Brugmansia plants survive the colder winter months in any garden, and if you choose to use one of these three techniques to over winter your plants then you should be able to enjoy your exotic Brugmansia flowers for many years to come.
There are several different species of Brugmansia (Angel Trumpet), each with a different level of tolerance to colder temperatures. With that said, Brugmansia are tropical plants that will not tolerate being frozen or long cold periods in winter months. To maintain healthy and large Brugmansia (Angel Trumpet) plants you can choose from one of the following three techniques that many gardeners use to prepare their tropical Brugmansia plants for winter.

Have been bringing my brugmansia into the house over winter . To allow them to over winter outside would be well worth trying ,and is something to go for next year. If anyone is thinking about trying brugmansia for the first time please take Craigs advice and give them a go. They are absolutely beautiful .

Great video. I was getting a little apprehensive not having any advice on storing the tender plants I had acquired over the summer, but here you are back again to tell us how to go about it. My husband was getting a little worried about all these jungly plants I was adding to our small garden but to me I feel that it has added an extra exciting dimension to the garden. We are in our eighties and it gave us something to think about during lock down, we even had a datura seed itself in the old chicken run. Thanks

So easy to grow from cuttings in water, I have five rooting even now in Nov. My three year-one plants are in pots in an unheated poly which has hit zero a couple of nights but still look good. I can't keep bringing more and more plants into the garage so good advice from Craig to take loads of backup cuttings and experiment with storing unheated and leaving in the ground. Thks Craig.

Thanks for sharing taking the time to leave a comment, mine did survive being left in the ground but it didn't flower the following year. Cuttings are invaluable as a space saving way to overwinter plants 👍🪴

That's good to know because I got one sitting inside the black pot in my kitchen and living in New York City it's very very cold up here so I rather keep it inside my kitchen and keep it endorsement so it's good to know to keep the plant enjoyment and then bring it outside it in May when the weather starts to warm up

Our brugmansia have survived the winters outdoors, in ground, covered with a straw mulch for years here in Kentucky, USA. In spring the plants regrow from the roots.
@grwutube1

How much mulch and straw covering. I live in Kentucky also and want to try to overwinter outside instead of taking cuttings and rooting them in water, then putting them in pots to overwinter.
@zman8845
@zman8845 Год назад
@@grwutube1 I've used at least 2 feet of straw put on in the autumn. Throughput the grass cuts I ensured I put the cut grass around the plants.

I’m in Lincolnshire and put mine in the cold greenhouse, mainly because it’s in a pot and can get waterlogged in the winter, they will rot. I keep mine quite dry, it dies back completely but once it’s brought out in late spring, watered and fed, it grows back fast. Beautiful plant.

Not about brugmansias but I did leave my jasmine plant that was supposed to be annual in my area in the ground during the winter. It went dormant and it’s now coming back! So I really believe the leaving in the ground works!

Hi there. I bought two rooted cuttings recently. They’ve been outside for the last month or so and I’ve just moved them to a greenhouse (but it’s more like a poly tunnel, only not as good as there are gaps at the bottom 😩). Will they be ok to stay there? I’m in the Midlands.
@GrowParadise
@GrowParadise 3 года назад
Hi, they should be ok if it doesn’t freeze in there. You could always fleece them as an extra precaution if it gets really cold. 👍🌱

Hi Craig, I saw something on RU-vid that said the Brugmansia Sanguinea, (yellow trumpet with red around the edge), was completely UK hardy. I've left one of mine outside for the winter, I'll report back if it survives.

Where are you Craig? I live in rural Wiltshire and can’t take the chance of leaving mine outside. I’m too scared of the frosts and would weep if I lost all my brugmansias that I’ve had for about five years. Good luck with the one in the garden.

Hello hope all is well, a question if i may, I have two large Brugmansia plants in my garage over wintering one of the stems at the top of one of the plant as gone extremly soft does this mean the stem is dying or have i lost the hole plant ...TIA Tony
@GrowParadise
@GrowParadise 2 года назад
It's likely just the soft newer growth is dying, you could cut it back if it looks as though it is rotting. So long all the roots are OK it will grow quickly in spring 👍

I've left one in the greenhouse and the other outside last year they both survived!!! I would like to know about bananas, as it is my first year! Someone told me to leave outside because Musa basjoo are very hardy apparently? Thanks for your videos!!!
@GrowParadise
@GrowParadise 3 года назад
It’s good to know that your plant left outside survived! That gives me more confidence 😊 Musa basjoo are root hardy, so even if the top growth gets damaged by frost they should regrow from the roots in spring 😄🌱

How fast do they grow from cuttings in terms of height in a single growing season? I have 5 different cultivar cuttings freshly planted and slowly sprouting new leaves. It's midway through spring here in Melbourne, Australia and I'm wondering how much growth I'm likely to get. Anyone know what these are like with hot summer sun or wind? It can get up to 40c+ degrees here.
@GrowParadise
@GrowParadise 3 года назад
Hi! These plants need plenty of water to stop them wilting in heat. Be sure to provide lots of liquid fertiliser during the growing season and your plants can grow from cuttings to 6ft high plants very quickly! Mine was only about 2ft high when I planted it in spring 😏🌿🌱 good luck and thanks for watching!!!!

If you get a canopy like that, you sit under it at 10 o'clock on a summer evening, have glasse of wine, or a beer and you'll be as high as a kite🤡🥳

Eventually as it warmed up I'd uncover the bruh it grew to over 7 ft that spring.so yes it can survive but you have to know what to do if you leave it in the ground over winter .
