I recommend to anyone who is afraid of going out at night to first try it on the days of the full moon. Instead of pitch black or bright as day, it's like having the nightlight on in the bathroom. (Sorry, I'm a city girl.) You can see everything clearly. Once you get really comfortable with the full moon🌕, start going out later in the month. 🌔 Until you work up to the new moon 🌑 (where there's hardly any moonlight.) 💖🌞🌵😷

GREAT advice, Suzi! That full moon is an amazing way to experience the night, especially since the animals usually treat it just like dark nights, even though our eyes are quite capable in full moon brightness.

What always surprises me is how bright it is at night during the full moon. Last time I moved, it was the week of the full moon and there was plenty of moonlight to load and unload my pickup. Yes, I had the porch light on, but there wasn't any electric light where I parked the pickup. 💖🌞🌵😷

The iconic riffs of Iron Maiden's song "Fear of the dark" started playing in my head as soon as I read the caption of the video :D Sometimes when camping out at night I'll be frozen for minutes or maybe half an hour, just breathing very shallow, sitting or standing, trying to hear everything but not give off any clues that I'm there. It's somewhat beautiful but also hard to snap out before getting too cold from not moving/not getting camp ready. What you do not need in that situation, is the scream of a barn owl - especially, if you don't know, what animal it belongs to. Sounds like someone's being slaughtered next to you... so scary! Same with deers calling. It's so important to be able to put the animal to these sounds to not freak out :)
@ReWildUniversity
@ReWildUniversity 4 месяца назад
Ha! Yes, when we don't have experience with night sounds, there are some animals that can definitely strike fear into us. Funny that the same sound (that owl scream) can send one person running away in fear, and another sneaking toward the sound, hoping for a glimpse of the elusive animal.

I absolutely love being out at night. The smells are different, the sounds, and of course the constellations. I can take "night walks" as we call them around my neighborhood with the dogs and kids, but sadly wed have to drove a fair way to take a hike safely at night. We have rather sizable unhoused population in my area who camp near our river and trails.😢

I really liked your suggestion to wear a blindfold inside your home where you feel safe and know where everything is located (no eye pokes at home). .. to build confidence but truthfully even on the darkest nights, you can still see somethings, things that help with echo location. Yes, I might have missed that twig, but I've never walked head on into a big tree. So maybe starting with just turning off all the lights in you home and just sitting with the flashlight off. With all the screens people deal with, many are uncomfortable just sitting in the dark inside their own home being in the moment, much less being outside. 💖🌞🌵😷

So true, and what a great way to get started if we're feeling intimidated by the dark. Indeed, for some people their houses can be really scary in the dark, and just sitting there, becoming familiar with the sounds and night-sights of your home, can be a great start in getting curious about the dark. =)

'The Dark'. Lions and Tigers and Bears! Only those beasties seldom bother people, especially people that don't bother them. Lived in serious bear areas in Alaska and NEVER ONCE was bothered. Even with leaving tempting food laying around 24/7/365! But really now. I like the dark. in winter time, with the shorter days, I often come home well after dark, and ya know what? My 'night vision' gets better, and my 'normal' vision gets better by way of the increased use they get. However, 'The Darkness' in a metaphorical sense scares me very badly, and what scares me about it the most is just how much of it I formerly thought was 'cool' simply because of societal conditioning. Makes me truly wonder how much more I still have not become aware of, and the incredible commitment to Spiritual Cleansing needed to clear it out of my life and KEEP IT OUT!
@ReWildUniversity
@ReWildUniversity 4 месяца назад
Two great points here, John. First, about those bears. We need voices like yours that speak from direct experience in bear country. So many people are sure that bears are just looking for the next human snack, but whenever I hear from people who actually work or live in bear country, they tell a different story, much like yours. Thank you for adding your experience and voice. Second, about "the dark". Often I wish that we had a different word for things that we call "dark" (thinking dark in the sense of human activities or mindsets). Because "dark" in the sense of lack of light in the night, is such a beautiful, often peaceful thing. One of those cases where our language equates things linguistically, and we then can equate them mentally and emotionally. Maybe we call lack of light "dark", and the human activities/mindsets "glark" or something like that. Hmmm. Doesn't have quite the right feel, does it? But I'm sure you get my drift here, lol! As always, thank you for your insight, my friend! Please give love from us to your family!

Hi, I would not recommend using a standard flashlight at night. In the dark, you develop night vision. It will take maybe half an hour or so to acquire the vision but using standard light you will lose it. The answer is to use (if you have to), flashlight with red filter and by doing so you will retain night vision without a problem. The system is used successfully by army and sailors at night. I hope it will help.

It is amazing how many wonderful things happen under the veil of the night; fireflies and other insects, amazing mammal and bird sightings, and, of course the starry night. I agree that it's importnat to learn how to activate our other senses while being surrounded by darkness. To be aware of ourselves when things are not the way we are used to is a skill we need to develop. I am so thankfull for my folks to send me every night to check if there was any connected electronic and to check for thedoors to be locked before going to sleep (with the lights turned off). I'm not going to lie, many nights I raced upstairs like a maniac. It eventually became a habit so natural that I was able to walk around home at night almost with the same pace and carelessness as I would in the day (lots memory and spatial awareness involved). Sadly, the luminic pollution has made hard to isolate from artificial light, we are not meant to be under constant light when we are supoosed to be sleeping (unless we live in high latitudes of course). Thanks for the great content.

What you said was how i am now able to go without light into a Forrest of darkness to fi d something to eat, or just see. (See as in, you can still see in complete darkness in a à way) i don't have to hunt now, but I i ever do again, you just discribed to others how to if they ever have that need. Yes i do have a fear of the dark. For me it is mainly the mind that go’s wondering off. I t could be in a building where I work all day alone and than suddenly when it’s dark the same building gives me the creeps. For me its not fear of animals ore strange creatures,it is my own mind making me scared. I guess i have had this since I was a kid. I am very much willing to overcome this fear and with the passing of the years it did get better but it’s not gone completely. I will use your approach to try and be more open and curious if it happens again and see if this helps for me. Thanks for your advice and talking about this subject. Best regards, Franc

@ReWildUniversity 4 месяца назад
Franc, what an important thing you're pointing out here. Really, our fears are almost always in our own minds. Even when we hear an animal in the woods, for instance, though it might be a real animal, it is likely not going to behave as we imagine it will (imagination = it's going to come and eat me, reality = it's going to smell human and run away very quickly). Sometimes just knowing that we are creating our own fears can help us realize that the route to overcoming them is to become more aware of our mind's activity. Let me know if this video helps you! With love, Kenton

@ReWildUniversity

A gun could certainly make someone feel more confident in the night, but it would be an emotional crutch. Whenever we are gear-dependent, we'll tend to fall apart if and when our gear malfunctions, is lost, or otherwise isn't available. So I think there's something to developing emotional resilience without using crutches -- then we can carry a gun, or whatever gear we want, but we have our own emotional strength that independent of the gear.
