Took me 9 hours yesterday but I dethacted twice, scarified and laid down seed, fall started fert, with humic. Still hot here in Michigan so trying to keep it watered! Hoping all my hard work pays off. Scalping my yard was taking it down to 2 inches instead of 3 😂
Nice work. Sounds like you did the right thing!keep it watered and you’ll be looking great in a couple of weeks. Best time of year for us northern lawns. Enjoy 😊
Lol, you were first, I saw haha. I uploaded wrong video, oops, computers are hard. Thanks Keith, hoping it looks as good as your bluegrass right now! I saw your lawn and new I had to make a move.
Aaron... Aaron... Aaron.... I almost cried when you scalped that beautiful front yard. 😂 I know it's gonna turn out fantastic though. great video bud 👊🏼
Lol 😂 I hope you’re right, because now I’m a little nervous. We’ll see what happens. If I disappear for a while you know it didn’t work out…Thanks, Nate. Good luck with the meet up tomorrow.
@@theperfectcutlawncare you better share the results either way man... I have full confidence in ya. It'll be fine. I wish you were closer! I'd love to have ya there tomorrow. 🍻👊🏻
@@billhill4929 if you plan on sand leveling you’ll have a nasty time mixing sand and cores. Also, when you run over plugs with a reel mower you’ll smash them into the turf. Kind of like how worm castings are a problem for low cut grass. Otherwise leave the cores. Hope that helps.
Amazing brother!! About to do mine next week! KBG overseeed up front and Bent, yeap, bent overseed in the back (and of course the putting green). A bit of a rebel this year 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
Me too! I did a complete renovation last year using this same seed (Mazama, Midnight, and Bluebank). This year, leveling again and overseeding. I had a few areas with dense shade that didn't come in thick like the rest, but I think I've fixed that. I'm using a sandy loam (60% topsoil, 40% sand), but plan on sand capping once I can reel mow to a half inch. Keep up the good work. Your lawn looks great!
Curious...I bought a 25 lb bag of KBG blend from Seed Superstore last year. I only used half of that. I plan on using the other half this year. Did you do the same or buy the seed last year and this year? I'm wondering how much the germination will decrease from a year ago. It started at 88%, but no idea if now it's like 50%? Less? I was thinking of just laying it down on the heavy side, but thought you might be the one guy who might have real world experience with seed that might be from the same field. Any difference between last year and this year?
It was the same bag. I kept it in my basement with AC summer and heat in winter. Happy with the germination. Took 5 days for it to come up, then did the usual sprout and chill. Right now the color is a bit light, but will darken up nicely by first week of October.
Water for 10 minutes every hour ? That sounds like you would drain your lawn not keep it moist . Did you say that by accident? Just stumbled on your channel for the first time. Ad a fellow lawn care nut who reel mows. Love the channel man. Keep it up!!
Absolutely I get temps in the high 80s-100 during summer and water a whole lot to stay super green when everyone is dormant brown and dry. When germinating fastest way to germinate is still in between wet napkin. Keep the seeds wet for a few days for the quickest germ.
First time visitor to your channel and looking for tips on doing a successful Fall overseeding real soon. I'm good all the way up to the watering part. I'm confused on the 10 mins every hour part. I have 13 zones to water so 10 mins each will take 2 hours to finish. Wouldn't this mean my sprinklers would run continuously for 8 hours straight? Am I missing something? 😆
@kenqman you have to do what ever it takes to keep the seed bed some where between completely dry and completely saturated. I did that August and so that’s what it took in my situation.
Thank you! If I didn’t do the sand project I probably could have skipped the overseeding this year. I know Ryegrass will come up over sand, I’m not sure what will happen with the bluegrass. Fingers crossed.
This process helps create the thick lawn. It’s like why would you go running if your’re already in shape. Also, because of the the sand level. I wanted to make sure there was coverage incase some grass was smothered. Hope that helps, cheers.
I did a full lawn reno last year with this kbg and I was planning to overseed this fall... but I had a very bad case of poa annua this year 😢 (thankfully the majority died off from the summer heat). I think I'll skip overseeding this year and lay down prodiamine.
Good plan, Poa can be a pain. Better to deal with it doing a fall and spring pre emergent, and then overseed next fall. It’s great looking grass, good choice 👍🏽
Great video. I'll be reseeding my lawn soon. Waiting for temperatures to go down at least to 80 degrees. I hope I'm successful this time, since the last time the grass was ok but now it's fried from the heat or dormmate (KBG)
I’m not sure what you’re growing down there. I lived in Escondido for a summer and I would imagine it would be difficult to keep a cool season lawn alive. But if I were to seed a cool season lawn I’d do it in January. Or plant Bermuda in early March. Sorry, So Cal is out of my league. Good luck 🍀
Hi I enjoyed your video hope it turns out well for you next year. Sounds like I probably missed my window overseeding this year. We're in Southeastern Wisconsin outside of Milwaukee. It's the 1st of October and I thatched and aerated today. But I probably don't have enough growing time to get a good start on a fresh batch of a grass. Is it possible to put down grass seed in late fall to early Winter so that it'll germinate early in the Spring. Thanks for any advice you might be able to pass along. I'll be looking for future episodes. Thanks again Jeff
Thank you for watching, I appreciate it! If you did ryegrass tomorrow you would be ok. That stuff comes up and establishes so quick. Bluegrass or fescue are slower and you might not get it established before winter. I did some Ryegrass yesterday, and it will work out fine. If you want to dormant seed, I’d wait until just before the first snow or before the ground freezes. The seed will work it’s way into the soil from the weight of snow and the melting in the spring. Then come up with warmer temps. Good luck with what ever you do. Ill make another here shortly about the results. Thanks again!
Great video as always. So I'm wanting to transition my front lawn from tall cut to short and am planning on doing a sand leveling like this. Now, my front yard is nowhere near as level as yours to start. There would probably be some areas with 1/2" or even more to make perfectly smooth. I honestly don't care if the grass underneath gets smothered and dies as I'm putting down a better cultivar. Should I just let it fly or is the right thing to do to slowly build up the low spots over time?
Thank you! Appreciate it. I wouldn’t want deep sandy areas. I’d fill the deep areas with soil, and then later in the fall or next spring I’d start fine tuning with sand. I had the same issue with the putting green. Filled in low areas with soil and then once I got it reasonable I did sand.
Great video as always. I do have a question about the grass seed blend you're using. With that blend, how long does it take to see sprouts? I know midnight takes up to 30 days to germinate depending on conditions but I'm curious if the other bluegrasses in the mix have a faster germination period.
This fall. Perrenial Rye will look great in 3 weeks. Kentucky Bluegrass closer to 6 weeks. Turf Type Tall Fescue some where in the middle. Assuming you live in the northern states.
Aaron is your area is getting decent rainfall? My town here in central Iowa has only received about 0.6” of rainfall since July 4. A series of days with 95+ temps put most lawns here in full dormancy.
I’ve been fortunate this year, we’ve had moderate temps and reasonabley short stretches of dry weather. Rest of the country seems to be a mess of extremes. Hopefully you guys can pull into some more agreeable weather.
@@theperfectcutlawncare yea, was wondering. I look at my yard and see a fine crop of crabgrass and clover thinking how lucky I am I don't have to fertilize it, and its green. LOL
In 1 of your videos you used a PGR 1 week before scalping. Makes sense so the seed isn't competing with the existing grass growth. Why didn't you use it on this overseed?
Good question. I sand leveled and wanted the grass to grow as vigorously as possible through the sand, and hoped that any thin spots would fill in from the over seed. Seemed to work out well, and I’m happy with the thickness of the turf and smoothness of the lawn.
@theperfectcutlawncare . Ok, short of the sand leveling, would you recommend the PGR for the overseed process?.....especially with KBG, which sprouts and grows so slowly.. ?
I re-did that lawn a few years back using Scott’s bluegrass. Last couple of years I’ve been adding those improved cultivars: the blue bank, mazama, and midnight. They have a nice color, so I’m trying to add more. We’ll see how it turns out. If it looks good next year at this time I’ll probably take a year off, as it’s hard work. Thank you though! I appreciate it 👍🏽
@@theperfectcutlawncare yes, I understand now. I also used scotts a few years ago. I added midnight and it really improved alot. you have one of the Best stands of turf on you tube. Impressed!
I did seed the next day. Seed doesn’t germinate well in sand, so if you have low spots with heavy areas of sand you might want to do a 50/50 sand soil mix.
I am overseeding with 50% KBG, 25% fescue and 25% perennial rye. After day 4 I saw the rye come up. It’s starting to get long. Can I cut if the KGB isn’t germinated? I would hate to blow away 50% of my seed
I’d only now with a mow with a push reel mower for the next couple of weeks. Otherwise I’d hold off. It’s ok if it get a little long, it’ll be easy to take back down once we get cooler weather.
@@theperfectcutlawncare thank you. I am already on day 10 after overseed. I think I will wait until day 21 or sooner to look for baby KBG. Does that sounds reasonable? BTW beautiful putting green!
Thank you! Blue grass is frustratingly slow. I’d just keep watering and hope that it starts coming up soon. I used seed super store ss1100 Kentucky bluegrass blend the last two years and that came up in 5 days. Jumpstart bluegrass cokes up fast as well if your looking for something that won’t make you wait too long. Good luck 🍀
I have never used a liquid aerator. That’s the order I’d do it in. I’ve never read a liquid aerate label, so I’m not sure if it’s ok to use at seeding. Sorry I’m no help Adam.
I should have. Made a snap decision to do the project while the wife and kids were out of town and the weather looked favorable. Didn’t really plan to go so early but everything lined up. Thanks for watching!
Im you won’t get much benefit. Has no P and that is the most important nutrient for seeding. Plus it’s slow release. Something like a 10-10-10 would be good
hey i am doing overseeding on my lawn but its currently at 3.5 inches should i really scalp it down to 1 inch its never been mowed that low in its entire life!
Good question, I’ll have to read the label, but I would probably put the regulator down several days before hand to get the desired result of slowing down the existing turf.
That’s what had to do in mid August to keep it from going dry. Ideally you want to keep it the seed bed somewhere between saturated and dry until germination. My bluegrass varieties came up in 5 days. Rye can come up in as little as three days.
Ha! Really depends on the weather. Need to keep the seedbed some where between dry and saturated. Now an acre is well beyond anything I take care of. 👍🏽
