Tip: Don’t expand your bag on your outbound flight. Use that extra room for your return flight. Also Jewerly makes a good small souvenir

On our last trip to Hawaii I incorporated clear vacuum storage bags into my carry on luggage with great success (the roll up kind that didnt require additional equipment). Pants/shorts in one, shirts in another, socks/underwear in a third. They were clear which made finding what I wanted easy. Uniform size which helped with packing. Because I packed them with similar items I could access just the shirts or just the underwear without tearing apart my entire bag. The sealed bags meant my dry clothes would stay dry should my bag get wet. And I was able to pack an extra bag or two very easily in a side pocket should the wife or I need it, or if one became damaged/punctured.

One best thing I recently started using is mesh produce bags for packing. Super light and not bulky. See through. And great for flat packing.

I found 2-gallon Ziploc bags and found that I can fit about 6 long sleeve t shirts in one and get a lot of air out. It's relatively flat too! I'm about to use gallon size for socks and another for underwear and bras. I'll bring extras next time for dirty laundry.

i never buy souvenirs for someone on a trip i went on "here's a magnet from a place you've never been" lol tho i do know many people who do and have friends/family expect something! of course, if i see something that i know someone would really love i try to bring it back. also i was thinking of buying a (nice looking) utility vest for all the extra pockets to help one bag travel
@PackHacker
@PackHacker 2 года назад
Are there any vests, in particular, you’re looking at? 🧐 -Eric
@fixerofthings

I'm with you. Souvenirs are generally things that people don't want or need and end up in a landfill. Take them out to a restaurant that serves food from the place you visited and tell them stories of the trip.

I am a HUGE vest promoter. It is like another free carryon. I have used Scott brand vest but right now my favorite is on from exofficio. I have carried a couple of days of clothe in my vest alone. I Always have my wallet, passport and sunglasses zipped inside, safe and close by.

@@fixerofthings What a great idea to share memories of a trip at a restaurant that serves food from the place! Love it! - Sometimes souvenirs are worth the hassle. I once carried a delicate cup and saucer home for a friend in my soft side backpack, and years after the fact I'm still touched that a friend brought me a quilt (!!) from France. Another gave me a tea pot she shlepped all the way from England (that's friendship!), and I truly treasure a simple tea towel my step-mom brought me back from Scotland. < : - ) Travel guide and ultralight packing queen Sarah Murdoch just did a video about converting a carryon to a checked bag to hold a treasure trove of goodies from Italy (wine, cheese, balsamic, etc.) on the return flight home. She crammed all her clothes and things into what had been her daypack and made it a carryon. I imagine it's very nice for her family and friends when she returns from a trip like that! ; - )

If you are switching bags frequently, i would advise against using the internal organisation of bags. You WILL forget somethng in another bag! Better use pouches for specific things like Tech, Fire, FirstAid, etc. There are some bags out with internal Velcro around where you can stick pouches with velcro backs to, so the Tech-pouch is always top left e.g.

In some parts of the world, stock levels of travel accessories are still low. Compression packing cubes are not in speciality stores in New Zealand... or Australia. With US shipping costs going through the roof, distance matters. The nearest place to buy is China. You will not find Eagle Creek here. When Eagle Creek closed in 2021, so did the supply.

Same here. I also wear older clothes on the long flight to international destinations. Then instead of washing I toss them if I need the space. I may not look real fashionable, but I'm good with that.

I have basically only two tricks which are widely known, but who knows, maybe it might be helpful for somebody if I still mention them here. First of all, for my carry-on I use only a rucksack and keep always an empty foldable personal items in it, just in case I need extra space on the return flight. That's usually around 10+ liters extra volume. Currently I'm testing whether I should use a hard shell personal items thing for both the ways and keep empty space in the rucksack - but that's not yet fully approved. Means I know that and how it works but I'm not yet sure whether it is more practical than my old method ... Second thing is that I plan ahead and bring always enough space with me in my check-in luggage (in case I use that option). I stopped decades back to purchase souvenirs or going around and getting spontaneously any gifts for those at home, but still it happens that I need to do some extra logistics on the way back. Either I plan to get me any specific things (or I ordered them already and pick them up there), or I have to bring something for friends and neighbors (It is an old tradition here to bring at least some sweets, and of course people just come and ask for the favour to bring this and that item which is not or not easily available here). So I know in advance more or less exactly how much extra volume and weight will be required on the return flight. Then I do not choose the piece of luggage which would only fit to my actual needs but take the one which also fits for the return flight - lucky me has more than one piece and size of luggage to choose from ... ;-) There are several ways to provide that extra space in advance - for example when we travel as couple (btw. yes please do a video about that topic) I fill sometimes one suitcase and put it then in another one, so we check in only that one suitcase for both of us and have a complete extra suitcase ready for the return flight. Or I select a big suitcase and fill the extra space with empty plastic bottles (it is a must to fill that empty space since half filled suitcases tend to be damaged) or I fill it with useful things which I can easily use or get rid of at the destination. Such as for example dog food and vet meds or medicated collars etc.. Since one can still find at many destinations plenty of stray dogs which are all happy to help to create empty space in any suitcase for whatever return flights ... ;-)

Second the motion! Also, this might not be super on brand, but I'm always looking for packing tips for family travel. My husband and I travel internationally with our three little tigers and we are writing our own playbook, since there is not a pack hackeresque resource for our scenario. (But if you need a freelancer for that market, hit me up! Or maybe I should send in an application and officially pitch the idea instead of passively making RU-vid comment recommendations...)

Hi I have some questions. (1) Can I bring 3 separate snacks (cookies, popcorn, and chips) out of its original bag in 3 separate ziplock bags? And would I have to put it in the bin? (2) Would I have to throw them away after I land if I don’t finish it on the airplane (I’m going to Spain)?(3) Also, do I put my phone, charger, airpods, jackets, shoes, and socks in the bin or leave it in my backpack? I’m so nervous for the security thing because it always gives me anxiety.
@KenshoQuest
@KenshoQuest Год назад
In case you haven’t traveled yet, or for anyone else who’s wondering: (1) Those snacks should be fine! No need to put them in the bin. It’s liquids and powders that have tighter restrictions. (2) I don’t think you would need to throw them away before landing, that’s more often for fresh fruit. (3) Those items can stay in your backpack. It’s normally laptops and tablets that need to be placed in a separate bin at security. If you are wearing a jacket you will probably need to take it off at security.
