Good prep for first timers. One thing I suggest and have done myself to dial in the weight distribution since preloading is not likely on the water, is to teeter totter the boat as it's test loaded at home. Support the belly so it doesn't bow and teeter it on a 2×4. It can be prepped for near-perfect at launch.

Regarding the paddle, I found an old 220 cm Lendel Kinetik locally and that has become my favorite touring paddle. It isn't full carbon, in fact I want to say it's the cheapest version of that paddle they made. I used it yesterday to do a quick 8 miles of ocean paddling, and it did go by quickly. I keep a decent pace just casually paddling, but when I need some power, I dig it hard and quickly pick up speed. Not usually an easy thing to do for a fat man in my barge of a Tsunami 165 lol.

I haven't tried camping in it yet either, but I've been wanting to for a couple of years. PS if you want to supplement your rations with fish but don't want to pack a full sized rod, I highly recommend Emmrod packable spring steel rods. I have one that fits in my Element day pack without breaking down. They're excellent in my opinion.

I am looking forward to the trip video. I live near the Catawba in SC. We have a nice long stretch of that river starting in Tega Cay and ending at the lake near Great Falls that we paddle often. My wife is a purely a longboat paddler, and it will be nice to see what is available on the upper Catawba. We've paddled Bridgewater, but that is 1/2 day at most. Also, I am very often accused of 'overpacking'... I know have proof that all that gear is necessary 😆

Right on Brian! I really really wish that the Catawba was not totally choked out by dams for the entirety of the run. Such a resource lost. Hey, great video! I noticed you’re using the V8 instead of your rescue pfd. Is this because you’re packing for the Current River, or do you never use your rescue vest for camping? If you have to tow, would you just improvise a quick release? Will you ever do a video covering basic rescue techniques, or is that a legal liability for you? Thanks for all the great information, I feel like I’m much more safety conscious after watching your videos, and I even take precautions on the slow lazy rivers we camp on. Hopefully someday, I get a chance to take a proper swift water rescue course!

A question please. Here in Central Florida the weather gets hot much 9f the year. For a cooking stove would you still carry the JetBoil and extra canister fuel? I've tended to carry a Trangia 27T STORMCOOKER Cooking Set for that reason. I worry about the explosion factors of canister stoves. You seem to have systematically thought out your gear so I would value your options about that. AWESOME instructional video. And lights, personal and vessel.
@RiverKingsKayak

From what I have gathered, the explosion have occurred while using a 360 degree wind screen type device. Not sure the canister would explode just from ambient temps... I know the canisters usually have a warning not to be stored in temps above 120F. I have used them for almost 2 decades all through summer here in NC where upper 90's are the norm. No issues that I have ever witnessed or heard of other than the internet...hope that helps!

Pete, do you have any yak suggestions for a beginner paddler looking to get into some multi-day trips? I'm in the Northeast US and was thinking of the WS Tsunami 145 as a possible option. I have experience in lake fish kayaking, but not much more.

I am currently recommending the dagger Stratos. It is a better boat than the tsunami. The tsunami is good as well.

The Garmin etrex 20 will it work with base camp or can you send info from your computer to it, and will it communicate with another Garmin like if your wife needs to know your location. I am kinda clueless on these GPS devices but these multi day trips they would be handy, plus you figure in they are only about the price of a good paddle i can easily sale this to my wife even tho she has some kind of built in radar already Oh either i missed it or you forgot to mention the duffel bag to portage or pack your way out ,like on the Current river in Missouri . Now i see why they are so important to take along.

For people who are afraid of water, how can they play kayaking?
@RiverKingsKayak
@RiverKingsKayak 8 месяцев назад
Great question! Firstly, I would try to get comfortable in water while wearing a PFD or personal floatation device and getting some basic swim lessons. With the PFD, that is a game changer that can give a ton of confidence. Then Always wear the pfd while kayaking. Start on calm water. This will give you the security of knowing that you can handle things if you take a swim. Comfort in and around water can be a big deal for sure! Just keep pushing through that fear!

I don't bring either Robert...In a backcountry setting (not in a designated campsite) firewood is usually present in amazing abundance. If I cannot simply break it without much trouble, I look for another piece. Processing wood takes a ton of time, energy and also introduces some of the "best" methods and tools that deliver serious bodily injury when accidents happen. I am definitely not against them, but I just never need them. (and they are usually pretty heavy!) Great question!

I shutter at the thought. They are sooo heavy and soooooooo slooooooow and have almost no performance quality in whitewater. They are indeed incredibly comfortable though! If I was slow floating for fish or going on a lazy float trip on flatwater then that might be good option. We will regularly go 40+ miles a day on our trips and the fishing kayaks simply cant do that.
