FINALLY! Full explanations & instruction! I'm SO sick of videos with annoying jazz music & no instructional value! I can really LEARN becasue you have made the effort to share your knowledge so generously- THANK YOU! I can't wait to see ALL of your videos.
Thank you so much for posting! I've been looking for years and I gave up, a year later your video showed up! Exactly what I was looking for! I am no professional - not by a long stretch but I would like to try to make a collar for my dog and you gave me the tools. Thank you! What an artist, your so skilled - thank you for sharing ♥️
This tutorial is RIGHT UP MY STREET.. im an orthotic technician and i knew EXACTLY what ya meant when ya said plasterzote. We have an abundance of plasterzote however me personally believe that a soft Poron (preferably pink(red but called pink)) would be more comfortable due to it being a sponge kind of rubber. Plasterzote has a tendancy to be quite harsh on the edges when cut. We stay WELL AWAY from using PZ with Diabetic patients so poron is the way forward with my pooch. Just thaught id let ya know. Not every day i give free hints. Awesome tutorial none the less. Thanks. I made my guitar strap using Poron and i dont even feel the weight of the guitar.
Hi, try dipping the knife in some regular water while cutting foam it act as lubricant , it helps when cutting upholstery foam, not sure for that one but worth a try ;)
It's going to sound a bit silly but for foam cutting, you may want to use an electric use a turkey carver. The blades will last far longer and save your knives while cutting foam. :)
That is so impressive.. I am totally new to this hobby, and have only made a few manchets, belts and other things, but I am so gonna try this.. Can you do a youtube on how to make a simple corset in leather.. BDSM related...
Thank you so much for all your wonderful videos. Can I ask absolutely love this collar and would like to have a go can I ask what leather you use as it is so shiny and a beautiful finish on it.
Thank you 😊 I got the glue pot from Abbey England and the strop board is one I got yonks ago on Ebay, you can get similar ones online 👍 The foam is called plastazote and you can also get thatfrom Abbey.
It depends on what I am making. If I am using black/ brown/tan I make my own stain. (I have a video on stain making) but if I am using one of the coloured hides then metropolitan Leather send me some stain to match it 👍
Watching this fantastic video again..2 years later :) can you please tell me what the foam is that you are using.. I couldnt catch what it was called... thanks so much... love your beautiful work!! 😍
Awesome job! Love your work. Question if i might, how much extra length would you need to consider to accommodate the padding of the collar? Thanks in advance :-)
Hiya, I have a table that I made by measuring sample collars with and without padding I think it's usually about 1 inch extra, but it also depends on the thickness of your padding foam and leather. Hope that helps, Jo
@@JHLeather Thank you Jo. It makes perfect sense to me. Im actually using unused yoga mats for padding, that would be about 3mm or so. Ill be sure to add a bit more length now.
Reason i mensioned diabetic patients is because they cannot feel sore points... and dogs cant talk so deffo pay that little bit more for pink poron. Cant be having a poorly poochie. Hope it helps.
The padding leather is babybuck nappa from AA crack & sons and is 0.8-1mm thick. You can use thicker leather but will need to taken into account the added thickness on your foam cut out.
Awesome! Question for you: I saw a video where someone made a padded guitar strap. Instead of doing like you did with the collar, they cut the foam much smaller than the strap, then glued the foam directly on. After that, they glued the thinner leather on top, sandwiching the foam in between, then stitched the edges around the foam instead of through it.. I am considering making some padded backpack straps and a leather shop I use suggested the other method. However, I'm skeptical that the two different thicknesses of leather won't fray or come apart outside of the stitch line. Can you give me your opinion of the other method? Have you ever done it that way? Thanks! Ron
Hey Ron, I personally prefer the way I showed in the video as the edges of the padding leather is protected a bit more. If you use the method you described I recommend using an edge paint rather than a stain as this will cover the joining of the 2 leathers better. Hope that helps
Hiya I used 3.5-4mm bridle butt for the main collar and a 0.8mm nappa hide for the padding. You can also use a thick shoulder leather for the collar if bridle butt is too expensive. Thanks Jo
😂 It's a powder dye I mix up with wallpaper paste, here a link to a video I made about it..... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hPJL7311020.html Jo
Brilliant video. How do you suggest getting started out in working with leather? Are there classes you can go to? Also where is best to buy leather and supplies from? Thank you!💗
Heya, it depends where you are based and what's available to you really. There are a few places in the UK where you can do group day courses, I offer 1:1 courses and there is Capel Manor College in Enfield that offers full time courses. I am not sure on places outside the UK I'm afraid. I use Abbey England for most of my supplies.
@@kimberley-7797 I'm based in Llanfyllin about 60 miles from Liverpool. 👍 If you have a look at my website www.jhleather.co.uk there is info on courses there or you can email me on info@jhleather.co.uk 🙂
Thank you so much for that, I admire you’re work! I’de admire it so much more if you illuminated you’re work area a tad more as seeing fine detail on dark leather on dark table is hard to follow. Thank you so much for the tutorial! Garry
Hi Mat glad you like the video 🙂. Not sure what you mean, I do a back stitches at the start and end to lock the thread in place then double hand stitch the rest. Double hand stitching and saddle stitch are the same stitching method but just different names. Does that make sense? Thanks Jo
ah, right my mistake. I misunderstood when you started and mentioned back stitch and then I only saw one needle working as it progressed. Figured it was a different stitch . Newbie daft question - glad I asked though :-)
Hey!! I see you using a crafty box for glue that also prevents brush from drying. I know I have seen these somewhere! Some help please? where to get that?
I love your videos. Would you mind providing a link to where you got the padding foam and the leather for the padding? I have been trying to find that combination since I first watched this video....and I have been grossly unsuccessful. Thank you in advance!
Thanks Scott 🙂 I get the plastazote foam from Abbey England www.abbeyengland.com/plastazote-soft-24kg-m3-7672.html its the 6mm option and the padding leather I use is the babybuck nappa from A&A Crack www.aacrack.co.uk/catalogsearch/result/?q=babybuck+nappa Hope that helps
J.H.Leather thank you from the bottom of my heart. I really appreciate you taking the time. I’m new at this and just sort of making stuff for friends and family and this really helps!
Hello, the one I am currently using is actually a 3.38mm one which is between 7 and 8 stitches per inch. The thread I am using is 3/18 linen thread or 432 lin cable. Hope that helps Jo
Yes you can use a sewing machine for dog collars however hand stitching is much stronger as it is not a chain stitch like on a machine so the collar will not fall apart if one stitch breaks.
@@JHLeather Hi Jo, which weight of plastazote do you use? The 24kg/M3 or the 45kg/M3? Love your videos, so accessible and I look forward to being able to take some online tuition if/when you offer it.
There is no pattern for these collars as they vary so much in width and length, if you watch the video I go over how to make any collar regardless of size.
hello can anyone please tell me what type of padding foam that she is using? All I could hear was 6mm plasters....something something? I'm going to pick up some closed cell 1/4" foam. But I am not sure what density that I should get. Or rather how stiff I should get it. Please, hopefully someone can help me out soon so I can get the correct foam for my project. Thank you!
Hello, I used a foam called plastazote. It seems to be pretty common if you Google it. I get min from Abbey England and its the soft 24kg/m³ option. Hope that helps. Jo
