At the start of what your making and accessories used could you please also write down what tools were used in making each collar and type of leather and thickness of each collar. Where you got your studs from etc. All this would be even more helpful for ppl just starting out.

I love this thank you ! I metal work and want to make a few collars with turquoise around it.. I'm not sure how to do that just yet but I'll look at your website or Tandy or if you know how I can put sterling with rivets somehow. If you have a video please share ! Thanks.

Thanks to your films, I've motivated myself to make leather goods, you're great :D If I can ask, what do you use for the padding? Neoprene foam?
@JHLeather
@JHLeather 5 лет назад
Thank you 🙂 it's great to hear that my videos are helping you 🙂 I use a foam called plastazote, if you have a Google you should be able to find some or I get mine from Abbey England. Or yes you can use neoprene, I like 6mm thickness for my padding foam. Jo

I just found your videos. This is the second one I’ve watched and it is fascinating to see how easy you make it to be. I’m going to try it. Just a question, what is the thickness of the leather you use? Is it a 12-13oz?
@JHLeather
@JHLeather 3 года назад
It's 3.5-4mm bridle butt, I think that translates to 9-10 oz 👍

Thank you so much for your willingness to share your techniques. What type of lining leather do you use? What type of lining leather do you recommend for horse tack? I would like to line a bridle and breast collar with this technique but want a leather that will hold up to the sweat.
@JHLeather

Hi there, I use babybuck nappa from A&A Crack for my padding leather, this is suitable for horses too. 🙂

Your Awl work always fascinates me, though I would prefer to see it real time rather than speeded up so I can learn more from it ;o) I have started some leatherwork, mostly in the Re-Enactment area as a hobby, though I am looking to perhaps go self employed and full time... I have watched your tool video on how to prepare an awl, but have yet to implement that on my own tools... I presume that was a Diamond Awl you were using, though it was so slim it looked like it was just a thin round one... if I may ask, how long did it take you to learn to use the Awl to the point that you don't mark stitch spacing or even use a Stitch Punch on the work?
@JHLeather
@JHLeather 5 лет назад
Heya, I've been doing leather work for almost 11 years and from the start used an awl over punching the stitch marker all the way through. The more you use an awl the easier it all gets. I use a diamond awl blade but you need to shape it so it fits through your stitch marks and isn't too big or your stitching will look a bit odd and not as good as it could be. I have a stitching video on here were it's in real time - I will be making another one soon now I'm better with the camera 😂 which may help you, its all about repetition really. Jo

Have to agree. Needs to be slowed down especially for beginners who need it to be the slower the better step by step

I see now! The piping is sandwiched between the collar leather and a padded lining! Great video. I do have one question... Is the ends of the padding leather not stitched?
@JHLeather
@JHLeather 4 года назад
No, you don't want to stitch across a strap as this will weaken the leather, if you want you can leave the ends of the padding long and then fold them back over on themselves.
@RyanAndersonNA

Love your videos - can I ask, your #7 stitch marker... does that translate to about 5mm spacing? I'm having trouble finding a conversion.
@JHLeather
@JHLeather 2 года назад
I think it's about 3.85mm
