@@DocDoesGamingTV I would start my journey with a "fg zaku II". It's the perfect canvas to paint on. At just $5, it's a great way to practice. If you mess up no worries since it's so cheap. I would not buy it from Amazon they sell them at $10-$15 a piece. Plenty of online hobby shops sell them. Buy it in bulk (3-5 sets) so that you can offset the flat rate shipping cost.

I've recently (almost) finished a custom paint of the GM Sniper II, using spray cans by Mr Hobby. To give a bit more details, one spray can is (at my shop) a bit two times more expensive than the same color in a pot (almost 3 euros for a pot of paint and almost 8 euros for the spray can). There are a lot less colors for spray can than for regular paint. And my main concern with spray cans is how quickly they get empty. Espcially for primer, it took me two cans of primer to achieve the robot and shield (haven't done its weapons yet), and I only did one coat. It seems to me that spray cans are less durable than thinned paint from what I've seen. So yeah, Studio G is right, plan your color scheme people, don't rush as I did, or you'll lose time, effort and money (at least you get to learn the hard way). And as for the finnished result : I'm really satisfied with spray cans. Nothing to complain about.

Based on my experience with the airbrush, I recommend evacuating the pot with water before you put airbrush cleaner through your airbrush. A toothbrush soaked in airbrush cleaner is your friend, especially when spraying bright acrylic paints. If your airbrush starts to spatter when you spray, take the toothbrush and gently scrub the tip of the airbrush, give it a blast of air, then give it a test on something expendable. if it's still spattering loosen the chuck on the needle back the needle out just a bit and give it a blast of air (might want to turn the pressure up) and any chunks that may have accumulated in the brass tip should come flying out. Reseat the needle, gently scrub the tip of your airbrush and repeat the test. Other things to consider are using airbrush flow improver instead of thinner. Vellejo thinner has a tendency to speed up drying time, whereas Vellejo flow improver slows down drying time. Also, keep in mind that some airbrush cleaner might have some fumes. Vellejo airbrush cleaner is pretty mild in terms of the smell and does good work without over powering you.

@@StudioGundam Look up Next Level Painting on youtube, Kenny mostly paints Warhammer miniatures but his videos on how to troubleshoot issues with the airbrush are super helpful. Most of my experience comes from getting nonairbrush Vellejo paints and P3 acrylics to run through the airbrush so my advice might not be as helpful for someone that is using enamel or lacquer based paints.

Great video! Best way I can describe AB vs SprayCan is that SprayCan is like an automatic vehicle, while AirBrushing is like driving a manual. Also, I’ve found that spray canning leaves A LOT of overspray that doesn’t reach the model, (due to distance) making it a bit less efficient. Both are great options however!

I've been spraycan painting for a while, and thought that I'm on the cusp of graduating to airbrushing (mainly for the benefit of having more options on mixing custom colours). However, I'd love to see what's the true limitation of spraycans, so perhaps a spraycan tutorial before I formally graduate? Thank you. In the end, love to see either (cans or airbrush).

I started with airbrush. It is quite expensive. I use lacquer base paints, Gaianotes are my favorite. I use some alclad paints every now and then. I am in the process of mixing my paints with the right amount of thinner. It was a pain to get the proper twist top squeeze bottles that work. A lot of the paints will take about 2-3 weeks to get to you, so doing all of your panel lines and adding the extras might keep you busy untill they arrive. It was a learning curve, however it has been worth it. Thank you so much for making these vids.

@flopofshame2582
@flopofshame2582 2 года назад
Tip 1. When you are cleaning your airbrush, increase the air pressure by ten to fifteen psi. Tip 2.use lint free scientific tissue wet with thinner to clean the inside of your paint cup and the outside of airbrush. 3. A 1:2 ratio of paint to thinner will help you achieve candy paint( and is my go to ratio in general) 4.apply photo etch parts with glue before you paint to ensure a strong hold( most hobby glues eat paint). 5. Use an explosion proof exhaust fan when painting with lacquer because the fumes are flammable( the fan is usually more powerful as well and will keep your environment fume free). 6. The distance you hold your part away from the spray will change the texture of the finished paint 7. Use a moisture trap as water will cause a splatter effect and ruin your finish( I do my painting near a fish tank so I use one on my tank and my gun) 8. Make sure you use the rapid drying thinner for metallic colors or the metal flakes will sink into the paint and effect the metallic look 9. Always use the slower drying thinner for non-metallic colors to ensure a perfect finish 10. Always use a static free brush on your parts to get rid of the static electric buildup from sanding that will attract dust to your paint job

pre-shading is an either-or thing with rattlecans, spray paint is generally very opaque so you're either using them exclusively to shade when priming, or you're just not shading with it at all. if you want to pre-shade with rattlecans you do it just to set up values, then you smooth out the transitions with a brush and then glaze on thin layers of transparent paint - also with a brush. this takes a very long time with small figures, I cannot imagine doing it on a gundam, lol

if you turn a spray paint can upside down and spray some air out without it spraying any paint you can actually lower the psi inside the can and get a little bit more control if you know what you are doing, but with some practice I'm sure you can achieve some decent pre shading results. ill have to try it now lol you can also get other cool effects or change the feel of cans through the same technique.
@ryantaggart7335
@ryantaggart7335 4 года назад
gotta be careful because the lower the psi the greater the chance of sputtering a can and getting little droplets all over your project which may not be the desired results.

Good thing i decided to check this video, i have an air brush and have tried it with water, however good thing i checked here because i didnt know you needed a primer to make the paint stick and thinner to be mixed in paint and didnt know how the paint should be like to paint. My only question is that whether any Acrylic paint and normal thinner will do or do i need to get exactly the ones in the video because am in India and everything will need to be imported. Also the model in question i wanna paint is Moderoid Ordine, The Azure Knight from Good Smile.

Thanks for the advice. For Spray canning, what brand do you recommend. I’m either going for Tayima or Mr. Hobby.

I would argue that if you plan on doing more than a couple of kits, then an airbrush will probably be cheaper. I'm working on an old MG Kampfer, and I've gone through about 5 cans of Tamiya primer, 4 cans of lacquer blue, and 3 cans of gunmetal, with a third of the kit remaining. Cans do not last very long at all, especially with multiple coats

Several time i do spray can, and starting to think wanna do airbrush. is it true that for long term, spray can is more expensive than airbrushing? Regardless the compressor for airbrush itself. Spray can is not efficient than airbrush? Due to spray can, we can't control the flow and more wasted the paint? Your vid is easy to understand, nice!

Hey man great video! Thank you. I actually want to get into painting, and 'm more inclined to airbrush (maybe do to the control that you have over it) but probably will start with spray cans... like just to start haha I think you should do a 2-part video series. 1st video: Spray Cans; 2nd video: Airbrush. :D

Zenathol primers are about the only way I could think of pre shading I don’t know how that would work on Gunpla though, it works great on miniatures like Warhammer AoS/40K though.

thanks for making this tutorial video; i will get an airbrush and want to go all in with this hobby. what are your recommendations for paints: acrylics, enamel, or lacquer? i have read elsewhere that acrylics are easy to work with, but, the finish is prone to scratching; lacquer paints are more complex; enamel is the medium - is the enamel paint reactive with the plastic? will it soften the plastic? thanks ... enjoy your videos and production quality

if you put a bucket with water next to your airbrush. You can put your airbrush into the water. Flush it, dry it and your good to go

Do you always have to use a primer with spray cans? I saw one gunpla youtuber spraying Mr.hobby cans directly onto the parts. He was using the same colours as the model kit however, and not changing the overall colourways of the kit.

How many clear coats do you apply on a build? Just started my first custom paint job on a 1/100 Barbatos. Do I seal with clear gloss before panel line and then finish with matte? Or skip the clear gloss and panel line directly onto fresh paint? Also, what thinner should I use to clean up after panel line if I used a lacquer gloss? Love the videos, keeps inspiring me to do better!!

In order to use a spray can correctly first do not shake the can instead swirl it in a circular motion so the bearing inside starts to rotate at the bottom when you shake a can it creates bubbles inside the paint then hold 3 to 4 inches away from parts then apply light layers with a left to right & vice versa hand motion.

What a good video bro, one doubt i hace with the airbrush cleaners, the Vallejo cleaner works with Tamiya or mr.hobby paints? Or it's only works with acrylic paints? Thnks

So I've been building gunpla for years now and I want to finally start getting into custom painting with a kit I'm waiting on atm. So the main question is how to handle painting areas inside of painted areas, for example painting around a specific armor plate in 1 color, then painting the inner part another color. If I let the paint sit and dry properly then apply the masking tape onto it so I can paint the inner section, will that have any adverse affects on the paint job? Or will I have to apply something to keep the first paint job safe from the tape?
@StudioGundam
@StudioGundam 4 года назад
Nie question and sorry it took me a while to reply! Ayway, you can mask them just like that after the first paint layer has fully dried. But make sure you stick your masking tape on somewhere else first like table or even your shirt then only apply them onto the part itself to avoid over sticking that might lead to your first layer paint getting peeled off as well when you're unmasking :) Hope that helps!
