A fantastic tutorial video! Thank you so much Emma for sharing your techniques and fix-ups with us. I have learned a lot from you, especially using darks first, and then when adding the lights, the contour lines just pop out on their own, like negative painting 😃Brilliant ❤️👍🏻

@DeanMarsh1962
@DeanMarsh1962 6 лет назад
Thank you, love your work. I started using Velour paper. Question please; do you rub in the applied pastel, all the way to the very last finished layer? Or do you leave the last layer on top with no rubbing it in? Thank you.
@EmmaColbertArt
@EmmaColbertArt 6 лет назад
Hi Dean, that's a good question and from watching back how I work I realise that I do rub in the majority of it. It's quite fine to leave the top layer in places where you want that mark totally on it's own and not softened into the layer below. But on the lower layers the more that's rubbed in, the better. In people portraits especially I tend to rub a lot more to blend. On fur for example I might want to leave marks more individual. Just started a Patreon channel if you're interested in seeing more about working on velour. You can see more about it at www.patreon.com/emmacolbertart

What did you use for the final sketch on the velour, pastel pencil? Also what original color paper did you start with? Thanks for the tutorial! 👍🏻
@EmmaColbertArt
@EmmaColbertArt 10 месяцев назад
Yes it's pastel pencil for the sketch. And I think this was on the sand coloured velour paper. I have many more recent videos that are much clearer. This was one of my earliest videos, thanks for watching!

Trying to decide to do a portrait in pastel pencils or soft pastels. It seems to rely on the size of the painting in some instances. How large is this portrait- TY AND TY FOR A BEAUTIFUL video.
@EmmaColbertArt
@EmmaColbertArt 5 месяцев назад
This piece was 12" x 10" I think so not huge. At least A4 for me usually. And once it gets down to tiny sizes I'm using a lot of pencil.

I honestly never thought of doing a portrait in pastels as I have used watercolor for so many years! I am not sure how a portrait will look with a more impressionistic look and I do not know anyone at the moment who would pay for one either! I might just have to try one for myself? Thanks for another wonderful video Emma, Have a lovely day!

Emma, I thought the trick with pastels is to work dark to light.
@EmmaColbertArt
@EmmaColbertArt 6 лет назад
It is usually but there are occasions where I'll add some highlight colour in early on. Sometimes seeing the contact between the darkest and lightest areas early on can be helpful. As a general rule though, dark to light with your layers.
@choochoochooseyou
@choochoochooseyou 6 лет назад
Ok thank you.
@EdgeOfLight
@EdgeOfLight 4 года назад
@@EmmaColbertArt isn't it the opposite? dark layers will be harder to cover than light ones so I thought it was better to keep the darker hues for the end

Just rewatched, Emma, I was always told using fingers on a picture was a big no-no because of the oils from your skin. Is this not the case with pastels?
@EmmaColbertArt
@EmmaColbertArt 5 лет назад
Never heard that before. I use my fingers in everything even if it's oils. I've seen artists rub their fingers on their work in all mediums.
@choochoochooseyou
@choochoochooseyou 5 лет назад
I've worked primarily in graphite in the past, Emma, and oils from fingers can ruin a picture.
@EdgeOfLight
@EdgeOfLight 4 года назад
hardly... unless you work on poor quality paper your finger won't do anything to your picture except make it more fun (or irritate your fingers in the long run).

@EmmaColbertArt

Thanks for your constructive criticism. All those things you mentioned are because I'm filming from a slight angle. The head's tilted as you're viewing from the side.
