You’re amazing! You’re the only pastel artist who blends colours, and that technique increases possibilities very much. Thank you for this clear instruction!
Hola Mariela. Yo estoy aprendiendo a usar la técnica al pastel y estoy interesado en tener amistades que les guste dibujar. Si tienes instagram podríamos contactarnos.
If I join your site, will the reference photo be onscreen during your EXCELLENT instruction, or would I need to print it out? Hard to paint, for me, without referencing a photo. Cheers and many thanks.
Very beautiful ! But not so easy. I used rembrandt and sennelier in the same time. I abandonned. I tried to apply the orange on the blue and the orange did not fix correctly. It was mixing with the blue. Maybe i shoud try on a paper before
acrylic would be extremely difficult to blend like this. You could still create a nice sky, but acrylic must be layered to create a blending effect, which can make realism a chore.
I love your stile, it is so beautiful ...I am new in dry medias and the few pieces I have painted so far was inspired by your stile, but done with colored pencils ...this month I am going to try and paint with pastels ... I am so exited and I just cant wait until my new art supplies have arrive with the mail. :D Thank you for your expertise... it makes a huge difference to me.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I have a pad of Pastelmat paper (#5 set) that I have been too afraid to use (waste- I'm still learning). I also have a set of 120 Rembrandt half stick soft pastels I've barely used. I really appreciate that you painted an apple. This might sound weird but my husband is having triple bypass surgery in March and I've decided to attempt painting an anatomically correct human heart against a soft background that has a suggestion of an EKG readout faintly behind the subject. The Pastelmat pad I have has a dark blue sheet so I'm going to use it, I think, and substitute blues, pinks, and purples for most of the greens and yellow greens you used as highlights on the red apple. Of course, most of the heart and its vessels will be reds and blues, but the lighter highlights are remarkably similar to how I picture the front of a heart. I'm thinking the background will be hazy blues and greys with the EKG sketched in very lighly. I really haven't found a useful heart painting demo on RU-vid that has all of the art elements I'm imagining. Your apple gives me a good idea of the kinds of contours, highlights, and shadows I might try, and using pastels on Pastelmat paper looks like something I might actually be able to pull off (if I can get the sketch right before I start.) I've worked some with various pastels (soft and oil pastels, and sticks like Nu-pastels), but this will be the first pastel piece I've tried that really has to be good. Most of my artwork has been watercolor and Inktense pencil with colored pencil over it, mostly seascapes. Anyway, thank you for the great lesson! Wish me luck.
Apart from the obvious application of the medium used, the vital details explained, are of equal importance. I have been painting in every medium for 50 years, but this really makes me want to love pastels again. Brilliant!
I manage to do my first pastel drawing last week thanks to your tutorial... That was amazing. I was afraid of the result because I didn't have the same paper, mine was so "grainy", but it turned out ok, even though different. Thank you very much for your time and dedication. I'm gonna post it on my blog, and you'll be credited. (link to video). But I'm not sure this is proper to post the link here. So let me know if you wish to see.
OMG! This is awesome. When I saw the thumbnail, I thought it was a real tree and a sunset. So I quickly clocked on the video it it was fabulous. Thank u🙌
Hi everyone, The teacher is using Rembrandt soft pastels, and Canson Mi-Teintes pastel paper. Also some pastel pencils. He should be writing this, not me - so many unanswered questions in the comments!
He says so in the video and there's a link to the detailed blog. People are just lazy and don't bother listening or reading and just want everything answered directly. Just like you know this and wrote it down here, people can look it up too.
I’m going to be helping with an art camp for 10-14 year olds. When I was a child taking private lessons , I remember using charcoal for drawing and shading, and when that was mastered we could advance to soft pastels for color. Then we could advance to oils. What do you feel is the best way to teach this age group? Pastels or colored pencils to learn about color?
I tried to do this and make as much depth and details to my painting as possible and surprisingly I love the result🤩. Thank you for showing how depth in the painting matters ❤❤❤
It looks like you’re using Canson Mi-Teintes paper. I’m amazed that you achieve so many layers on that paper as I have found it to be not so accepting of layers. I must be doing something wrong.
It must be someone accidentally touching the thumbs down.. I agree.. who could object to such perfect beauty. Thanks again... I saw this in my saved videos and couldnt stop watching.. love Marcia in Modesto
Hala Eid it depends very much on what brand pastels you are using and also the paper. I’ve found that a Schmincke white pastel will go over anything, because it is so soft. The only reason a very soft pastel won’t work is if the paper has run out of tooth. Regular paper hasn’t got much tooth at all. Get some uart or even Canson Mi-Teintes (what the teacher is using) and it will make a big difference. I hope this helps.
I have a question, I just bought some nice pastels and worked on my first pastel drawing. However, I couldn’t get the colors to cover the other colors the way you did. Such as the yellow and blue. It just turned to green even though I thought I was careful about it. Then I tried using the colored pencils over for details and they wouldn’t lay down at all like the way you used yours in the foreground. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you so much for the tutorial! Very beautiful work!
It is so beautiful and real. Thanks for amazing video. Please can you tell me which colors apart from soft pastel (rembrandt) and soft pastel pencils did you use?
Hi, I have pastel pencils and they don’t seem to work well when trying to put lighter colors over the darker colors. Is it better to get different kinds of pastels in order to do this. Thank you.
hi i'm new to pastels art ! can you tell me the difference between soft and oil pastels ? and which one is better ? i live in morocco , art supplies are kinda expensive , i found oil pastels for about 9 dollars is it a good price ?
There are several differences, but the most noticeable one is that oil pastels feature an oily binder making them buttery while soft pastels are chalky. Oil pastels are usually cheaper than soft pastels. This demo is using soft pastels.
+Drawing and Painting Tutorials - TheVirtualInstructor.com thank you for the answer , i'll buy the soft ones cuz your painting is amazingly beautiful , fingers crossed i'll be able to create something a bit closer to this ( i'm not as talented as u're )
I tried to reproduce this painting on Ingres paper with Rembrandt pastels... the result was so disappointing that it ended up in the trash. Impossible to apply as many layers as in the video, the colors are mixing, the paper doesn't retain the pigments anymore, and the disaster is on its way! I thought a few days ago I would join the site, but now it seems to me that it would be a waste of money. This technique is distracting when you watch it in action, but impossible to reproduce it without more precise indications on the material to be used.
Hi, I have Rembrandts but not pan pastels. How do you suggest I apply the areas with Rembrandts where you used pan, please? Great tutorial with no pointless chatter. Much appreciated.
