Thanks for this video. I always find backgrounds to be the most difficult thing to get right or even marginally adequate. Seeing the process carried out and explained in such detail was very helpful.

I learned a few new things! Thank you for this. I wish you had done a video on how you actually did the “tape” thing. That’s impressive. I also wonder why your paper is buckling so much? I use Arches also, 140# and never have an issue with buckling especially after stretching. In any case, wonderful demonstration. Thanks again for the real time video. Super helpful.

I am so excited that I found your youtube channel. This is great stuff! I would be so frustrated with that palette where the paint doesnt want to adhere to it. Is it new? I hear you can scruff it up with elmers glue or soap? What do you think?
@lorrainewatry_watercolors
@lorrainewatry_watercolors 4 года назад
Hi Kathy, thanks for the feedback. I haven't heard of using elmers or soap. But, you can use a Mister Clean Magic Eraser or a fine grit piece of sand paper. However, if you rough it up a lot, the surface will stain more easily. I find some colors will bead up more than others. If you really don't like it, you might try a porcelain palette. I have heard they don't do this, but are more expensive and heavier. Good luck.

Thank you! I absolutely love your technique. One question -- How do you remove the masking tape without damaging the paper? I have been trying many different tapes and can't work out how to remove it cleanly. Thanks!
@lorrainewatry_watercolors
@lorrainewatry_watercolors 4 года назад
Hi Anna, I use Arches 140 cold press watercolor paper for most of my paintings. I have not had a problem removing the tape from this paper. If you are using a student grade paper (Canson, some Strathmore for example) it is highly likely that the paper will tear. I have also tried the tape on Fabriano paper with success. I did have some students that were using Arches watercolor blocks and when they used the tape it tore their paper. So, I would test whatever paper you are thinking of using before using it on a painting. Also, when you remove the tape, you should pull slowly and at an angle, not straight down. I hope this helps.
@nicolem376
@nicolem376 3 года назад
I have also had that problem on good paper & applying tape to fabric several times before adding to my paper. I finally found that if I heat it with my heat gun on low or a hair dryer it loosens the adhesive & whatever is left on the paper roll off when you rub it.

I would really like to see how you tape the flower. I am a professional wildlife art and this technique would really help me Have a more vibrant and controlled background.. Di you have a video showing how you cut the tape but not the paper Kathryn

@monicaj3023 3 года назад
what are the benefits of stretching the paper ? Thank you for all of your wonderful knowledge and sharing your beautiful work.
@lorrainewatry_watercolors
@lorrainewatry_watercolors 3 года назад
Hi Monica, If you are using 300 lb paper, it doesn't need to be stretched because it is heavy enough not to buckle a lot when using a lot of water. However, lighter paper like 140lb. will often buckle if you are using a lot of water on it. So, I stretch my paper to keep it from buckling, the water from stretching will set my pencil line a little, and I also feel the paint looks a little smoother on the stretched paper.

Ceramic pallets are holding the paint so good , and plastic hold water in drops.
@lorrainewatry_watercolors
@lorrainewatry_watercolors 3 года назад
Yes they do hold the paint in place better. I don't like ceramic palettes weight when I go to teach a class, though.

Thanks for the video! I have a question , why choose aureolin and not lemon? Because of the transparency?
@lorrainewatry_watercolors
@lorrainewatry_watercolors 5 лет назад
Hi Christina, I just like Aureolin better, partly because it is more transparent and it is a little less vibrant. If I had used Lemon, it might have mixed with the sap green and made lime greens in the background, which I didn't want.
@ChristinaTodd1970
@ChristinaTodd1970 5 лет назад
Lorraine Watry Thank you. I have Azo yellow by M Graham but they also call it aureolin. It's actually PY 141 Benzimidazolone yellow. I wonder if it has the same working properties as your PY 40 from Daniel Smith?

Hi Amanda, that is a basic dish sponge that I cut the corners on to fit in the green antique ashtray. I will sometimes use the sponge to clean my brush on instead of a towel. The ashtray makes a good place to rest my brushes because they don't roll.
