The birch trees are beautiful. I know them as birch trees. You did a wonderful job. I will be watching the other links too, but maybe not right away. I need to do other things for the next few hours. Thank you for teaching us your method.

Love those birches and your masking tape trick is so clever! And yup, that Canson XL is the pits with wet in wet. Wow, Miranda, really appreciate your exploring other papers and so many insightful comments! This was the most satisfying class I've had in a long time! 🥰Cheryl

These are so cool and so pretty looking. I love this idea. I had to watch all of your video first but I'm going to go and watch the other one now. I think I might try this painting as well, the thumbnail like you send is just gorgeous!

Very interesting and pretty well done. I'm going to watch this video again and try it when I have more time, in few weeks time. I would like to paint a spring scenery with bluebells in a wood and that technique gave me inspiration. Thanks Miranda. Have a lovely week-end near the log fire. See you on Tuesday. V.

Well, here it is pretty warmish. About 11°Celsius which is 52°F, but it should be snowing in Scotland in the next few days. I leave in the South of England, so i won't be affected. I will be posting the picture to you.

Ironically I watched the video for the thumbnail you found yesterday and tried his method but with tape. I’m in Denver and it’s very dry here so the paint and paper drying was an issue. But I’m happy with it so far; however after watching your tutorial today I need to give that a try. You’re a great teacher and wish I could be in one of your classes.

Thank you, Kimberly, that's so kind of you to say! I had so much fun painting all these Aspen tree paintings using this method; the best part was being able to re-use the masking-tape trees and trying different color schemes. I'm about 3 hours from Denver, so I feel ya!

@@MirandaWatsonArt how do you deal w the paper drying. I find it to be a huge challenge!
@MirandaWatsonArt
@MirandaWatsonArt Год назад
One thing that can help quite a bit is to thoroughly wet the back of the paper before starting your painting. I also tend to apply several layers of water before I start painting - making sure that none of the paper has lost its shine. By the time I get to layering water over the entire painting, I usually have to layer more water over where I first started to make sure it's nice and wet still. Sometimes I end up with three "layers" of water. Hope that helps!

Wow, I love this tutorial style video, would love to see a lot more of these from you! You are a wonderful teacher! I've done up to 10 iterations of the same painting, I think it's SUCH a good way to learn. I watched the inspiration video and a few others from that guy -- I haven't had a tv for many many years, so I had no idea that guy was on PBS. This guy is absolutely addicted to massive quantities of mask. He also can't seem to do a painting without spray bottle, salt, razor blade, etc. He even used a palette knife for some of the work. But I like your tape method better, I have no patience for sketching and masking THAT much. But I loved how he sprinkled paint everywhere then spritzed it gently. It's so interesting to see how different people approach the same painting! I could think of several other ways he could get the same effects with less work :) I mean he masked off rocks and tree trunks that ended up darker than his wash -- why mask? He could have just painted them over the wash. I think he just likes fiddling :) I actually liked your painted tape trees on plain paper too LOL

Ah, thank you Jenn. It does seem like the tutorial videos do much better here on RU-vid and those types of channels grow quite quickly. I just haven't been ready to plunge into that category yet as it does take a huge amount of time and effort to get it right. It's so great that you've done this one so many times (I have as well!). His method was really interesting, and I wouldn't mind trying it some day. Yes, I always tell me students not to worry about masking if the top layer will be darker than the background anyway. What a waste, lol.

@@MirandaWatsonArt Oh, I have NOT done the aspen painting yet, but I was looking thru last year's paintings yesterday and found 10 attempts at a sunset. It seemed so simple, but I had no idea a multicolor gradient was the most difficult thing you can do in watercolor 😂

Gorgeous! Of course I thought really dark-like nighttime! Indigo, greys, & purples. So now what to do. Nothing flows like Qor-but I only have Sap green. Their indigo is the absolute best. I feel a purchase in my future. I'm thinking the high Chrome set & a tube of Indigo. You might want to link them & tell me I've been a good girl this year & deserve to get them!
@MirandaWatsonArt
@MirandaWatsonArt 2 года назад
Oh, Beth, you're so darned awesome. I did link the Indigo in the video description, and I'll add the High Chroma set. You definitely don't need the QoR paints to do this painting, though. My students all did it with whatever watercolors they had and they all turned out beautifully. The key is just to get a nice big puddle of creamy paint ready to go. However, you DO deserve them! Lol. Many many hugs.

Thanks, Becky. Yes, try this! It's really fun and satisfying, even if it is a lot of prep work in the beginning. The salt really adds to the look as well, so try to include it if you can!

Today I learned: Birch bark peels, Aspens look nearly the same but the bark doesn't peel. Apparently aspens are the most widespread tree across North America! Because of the way suckers grow, many trees share the same roots and a whole stand of aspen trees is considered "one" organism. The oldest living thing on earth is an 80,000 year old Aspen organism in Utah.
