This week I have created a digital art tutorial on how to paint backgrounds for characters, except... we're not going to paint any backgrounds, at least not in this episode... We've got some theory to crunch.
This tutorial will focus entirely on art theory, giving a simple explanation of art fundamentals and how they can be applied to an image.
I will create a quick character design and point out many of the mistakes that beginner artists make when trying to push their art to new levels.
If you enjoyed the video, please consider subscribing to my channel.
I release fantasy art tutorials regularly and would love to have you along for the journey so that we can learn and grow together.

I've found that playing around with objects, materials and lighting in 3D programs like Blender, can help you get an intuitive sense of how certain materials behave, how light bounces, how colored light/reflected light behave and all those other good things. It can also be a handy program for making references, if you don't have a little wizard and a bunch of colored light bulbs on hand :D

Hahaha yes! That is excellent advice! I used to make basic 3D models in blender and sketch up, just to establish perspective and get a good light/shadow pattern for my environment paintings. Very handy stuff indeed.

Personally studying life was a far better move as you begin to understand how light, color, and value work. Plus it gives you more creative freedom rather than relying on software.

The moment you flipped the character and it looks the same, I said: "WOW!" out loud and clapped! Thank you for the tips and tricks too! :D

Absolutely loved this video. Looking forward to the next one. I would have forgot about the sun light because it's not so apparent in the background.

Well I'm very glad you enjoyed it. I still have a lot of learning to do when it comes to making this kind of tutorial content, but it's nice to know that it is being appreciated 😊

Very interesting video :). it cool to see some thought process presented in this way. Just simply adding a background wont add much to your image. keep up the good work.

Thanks Daniel! That's right, I really believe that thinking about every part of the image as one thing is important. If you try to treat them as separate things, they will probably end up looking like separate things.

This is by far the most helpful thing I've watched on backgrounds ... After drawing for years, I can finally move on from the "copy the character's silhouette and turn it into an identical shadow on a flat background" approach haha

Just the video I've been looking for, pls whenever you do decide to drop the next video about this study, pls do remember to explain the kinds of layers being used when coloring, and which layer stays ontop or bottom, thanks

Thanks for letting me know exactly what kind of information you are looking for, I tend to skip over all of the technical stuff, but it is essential information, so i'll make sure to include it in the next part 👍

Traditional has quite a few more hurdles, but the principles are the same. Perhaps doing a few small colour studies first will help you to nail the final painting. Good luck and thanks for watching!

Hahaha yep, I figured it was time to come out of hiding... talking to a camera is just too weird, I've been avoiding it for so long. But I guess there is no way to get better at it except for jumping in and doing it until the awkwardness goes away 😅

yk what's funny... i been doing the oppesit thing and i was strugling cuz the backgrounds didn't have the right prepective (top down rpg) and i was confused why it doesn't work now i relised i just had to put a 2d character in the scene and try figure out how that perspective work
@matthewdobrichillustration9014
@matthewdobrichillustration9014 2 года назад
Thanks for watching! I'm happy that it helped something to click. It helps me to think of everything in the scene existing within a cube, somehow that helps me to imaging the perspective a bit easier 🙂
