Amazing class as always. Learning how to do simple low effort high yield backgrounds, I can quickly put Rick Astley everywhere. I mainly Krita but this is helpful.
I'm drawing my friend's character for her birthday. I got the sketch ready and suddenly realisation hit me that I am not very proficient when it comes to backgrounds XD Thank you, you just saved the birthday present ^^
I actually use the gradient tool very extensively to create detail backgrounds with barely even using the brush too, in perspective too. It saves on hours of work it's impressive what you can do with it.

Another one which is a great fit is the "dynamic square" A quick cut of colour, or the same blur type you used on the whole image, but cropped down into a size smaller than the character, so aspects of their body pop out of the image behind them. Literally making an effect to "pop" out your character from the canvas, while beinng in the canvas. WoTC does this a bunch with their dynamic watercolour splash behind a character, but their feet, arms, or torso are out of the splash.
No joke, my wife just said to me, "You should add some backgrounds to your characters," and just like the explosion effect that Marc loves to use, this video appeared! Thank you so much for your help Marc!
I'm no painter and I'm extremely lazy with backgrounds, however for sure I can still apply these tips to my pics. Too many times I overthink backgrounds and spend so much time creating one when all it needs to be is as simple as these three examples in this vid. Thanks man
May I suggest a topic for a video, which also has to do with backgrounds? Let's say I'm working on a character and I really end up liking the character and the pose. And I want to take it one step further and add a real background. The question would be: Are there easy ways to figure out the perspective for the background so that the character fits in perspective- and size-wise? That seems always very hard, if you accidentally draw a character, who should be place in a 3 point perspective. Or if the character doesn't have much armor with hard edges, where you could start figuring out the perspective lines / vanishing points.

Omg, thank you! This is so helpful for the project I have been banging my head against the wall over. I tend to get caught up trying to decide details to include in the background and lose motivation to finish the actual piece.

Hi marc! I recently joined the artschool and im very excited about it :) Anyway, one tutorial which I dont think ive seen on your channel yet is fat bodytypes. I struggle with fat distribution on characters and it would be great if we could get a video on that!
Very helpful! I actually do the last one make it so the white of the background are the clouds to feed into a chara standing on a well defined circular stand. Similar to a character figure. :) Another option is to do the same as above minus the ground. I paint using textured brush an almost airbrush/crayon/graffiti splash around the silhouette. I will try the minimal wall and blur backdrop next time. :) or even combine multiple styles to create a mix and match. 👏❤️
This is the first channel I've found that says actual helpful shit. Like everyone else gives such general information but your channel gives all this great information for free! I have learned so much and improved so much in digital art and as someone who is in art school for traditional art- this stuff has been INSANELY helpful.

I have a video suggestion. Please do a video on how to match the character’s colors with that of the background, so that it looks like the character belongs in that background. The lightning of the environment should affect the hues, values & saturation of the character, in order to create the appearance that the character is physically present in that environment. I’ve seen artists try to create coherent colors in all parts of the image by applying a layer filled with a certain color on top of both the background & the character layers, and then reduce the opacity of that layer, so that it looks like both the character & background have the same hue. I don’t know if you would recommend this method, or if you would use a different approach.

I like the idea of just showing a small example of implying or suggesting where your character might be coming from with that 3rd concept. Definitely gives more attention to the character without the background looking too basic or generic 🤘

I love your videos, they're so helpful! you got me out of art-block tbh I keep finding exactly what I want... but I have yet to find hats tutorials. can you do hats, beanies (desperate), headscarf/hijab (u don't have to do this), helmets and such! maybe you already done and I haven't found it yet
Usually a character dont make a pose on background he is just in there. Its a good tip. Dont try pose your character on a scenary, merge him with scenary as a scene of a movie or something loke that. Pose are usefull to character design, wen you are trying to demonstrate how the character is in full body
the third image is similar to how I usually do, but the different is that I spent too much time on something so simple while in fact I could just do it quickly and focus on the character themselves. The first one is something I'd love to do every so often since it's nice and simple, the second one is kinda new trick that I never thought of but still won't do because even though it's simple but it's kinda bad when you just do it half-heartedly.
Every time we see an explosion, that's another year added to his mastery in the arts 😂 Gosh, wish I was told this many years ago. I has a gallery of characters on white backgrounds because I really didn't know what to do for a background and Photoshop and I was called out once because I used a lot the Clouds filter for my first characters that I never dared to make a background for the lack of knowledge or tips on what to do. Making a background relying on the colours of the character is so satisfying, I dunno why -- I blame it to much pent-up backgroundian frustration.
