In this video series, I wanted to break down the recipes and techniques for how I approached "speedpainting" my Blood Angels for tabletop play.
This will be the first in a multi-part video series:
Part 1 - Infantry
Part 2 - Dreadnoughts (and applies to larger vehicles)
Part 3 - Various Power Weapons
Part 4 - White Apothecary Armor

Love this video. I wanted to ask where you got the bases from as I'm keen to start a boarding actions project and think these would be perfect. Thanks in advance. 😊

Hi Jonathan, thanks for the video! I really like how you did your bases! Wanted to ask why you chose to use the AK paints for the blood angel? I use a similar technique but with citadel khorne red, mephiston red, evil suns scarlet. I’ve tried vallejo and pro acryl but find the citadel paints give the smoothest airbrushed layers with the least texture. But I’ve not used AK paints before and was wondering how they compare with citadel. Thanks!

Check out my video on Essential Colors, where I explain why I don't use GW paints and why I've gravitated towards AK lately.

Where did the bases come from or are they custom made?

Hey there, these minis look absolutely amazing and I've fallen in love with them, you did an amazing job on them! I would absolutely love to make my own army out of them, and I've heard that a few of these pieces are printed from Cults3d. If you dont mind me asking, what parts were printed and what terms could I search and use to find these specific prints? i.e. the shoulders, helmet, packs, weapons etc...
@JohnathanHo
@JohnathanHo Год назад
Honestly a lot of it was just the "suggested files" from original searches. I'd probably start with "Blood Angels" or "40k", and deep dive from there. A lot of it is from Cults3d; some paid, some free, and then things like the arms are reposed to hold weapons (especially the maces, axes, and spears) since the resin doesn't cut/pin particularly well, so it was easier to print everything as a whole piece rather than separate.

Beautifully done! Really tempted to try as ive recently got gifted some ak 3rd gen paints. Whats your thinning ratio if i may ask?
@JohnathanHo
@JohnathanHo Год назад
It varies. I usually do 1:1 for most of my basecoats and highlights, but will sometimes go 2:1 or 3:1 for washes/glazes depending on strength

@@JohnathanHo thanks. Been trying the paint scheme recently but just cant seem to find the correct ratio to prevent pooling, webbing or clogging through my hp cs. Will have to test again.

What 3D printer did you use for your custom armor/weapon pieces & bases?
@JohnathanHo
@JohnathanHo Год назад
I printed everything on the Elegoo Saturn, using Elegoo's Ceramic Grey Water Washable Resin.

Brilliant work!! Do you have any tips though as I’ve tried to replicate this using an airbrush and the colours are much more desaturated than in the video. Also the blood red appears more orange in real life. Am I doing something wrong?
@JohnathanHo
@JohnathanHo 10 месяцев назад
So I would avoid using the airbrush for the top half of the highlights. I find the finish of airbrushing the colors is very different from hand painting them, where you get a much more intense, opaque finish.
@Phoenixfett
@Phoenixfett Год назад
sorry might i ask are you doing your oil wash with out glossing your mini's? thanks
@JohnathanHo
@JohnathanHo Год назад
Correct. The process for how I'm using oils on these particular minis, and how I'm following up the painting process afterwards, means I don't necessarily need to gloss the minis. The gloss is meant to help break surface tension, specifically keeps the oils in just the recesses, and also helps with allowing you to cleanly remove the oils from the surface (ie if you're dot filtering). I don't need any of those; the gaps on these models are chunky enough the oils collect in the recesses anyways, and I was always going to repaint/blend/highlight the armor afterwards, so a little messiness on the larger flat areas (might be more noticeable on the tanks/dreadnoughts) is a non-issue.

Where did you get your helmet from? Is that one of Red Warden Miniatures' primaris heads?
@JohnathanHo
@JohnathanHo 10 месяцев назад
Correct. cults3d.com/en/3d-model/game/blood-angels-intercessor-helmets It's their BA Prime helmets, which are "Technically" for Intercessors, but they work just as well for the Firstborn and Horus Heresy armors as well.
@ProfessorOfPoorTaste

@@JohnathanHo How close are his heads to the official models? I've been looking at some for my own minis, but nobody ever seems to have comparison pics for 3D prints vs official stuff.

Scarlet Red. Sorry about that! I'm still playing around with a new wireless mic I've picked up, so I think the gain levels need fiddling (and probably shouldn't use the fuzzy "pop" filter attachment it comes with! :D

Did you kitbash /convert the wrist mounted bolter?
@JohnathanHo
@JohnathanHo Год назад
As most of the weapons/bits on my Blood Angels, it's a 3d "kitbash" (stl-bash?) that I then printed.
