Another excellent video. Super inspiring content and very, very well explained. What I love about Henry's videos is the enormous amount of added value on his comment, explanations and reasoning behind the decisions for color, tone or number of layers. Of course, also the thinning of each paint and airbrush set up (psi, needle, etc) I will be 100% using the pre-shade technique on my imminent Dark Angels project.

Henry essentially taught me this colour scheme and technique in 2017. Its easy to follow and i'm still slowly adding to my army to this day.

Love the metal scheme. Finding warp lightning quite forgiving through the airbrush but struggling to get DA green right as it’s quite overpowering. Rewatched this again and you make it look easy 😅

Excellent video, Henry. Would love to see CoP do an 'army project', and I think Dark Angels with having the Deathwing / Ravenwing to add variety really lends itself to the idea to mix up the schemes. As for the better miniatures, I would probably go for the non-metallic one, as they may look slightly at odds with the flat colours of Deathwing / Ravenwing. Although Metallic Bone/White for the Deathwing could be an interesting concept to explore!

+1 for the metallic, I've always thought that they look so much more like 'armour' than flat schemes. Prefer the Forgeworld helmets though, I'm using them for my own Iron Hands Primaris project and they look great.

Hello ! Nice tutorial ! The metallic scheme got my eyes too, I was wondering which base metalic color (gold or silver) I should use for a similar result, I'll try experimenting with the "contrast" paint. Have a nice day !

I've used silver on nearly all my clear schemes. I'm not convinced gold makes any appreciable difference.

Brilliant as always. One thing I've always wondered, why the Chaos Black primer rather than an airbrush primer? I've no opinion on the matter but as I'm planning on getting an airburhs in the near future (one of the CoP Evolution's) I wanted to get your thoughts.

Chaos Black Primer has never let us down, it's quicker than airbrush, and a lot of airbrush primers can go off pretty quick. Have used Badger Stylenrez in the past for touch ups and it seems good.

One month ago I adaptes your preshade tutorial in which you used blood angel red contrat paint here by replacing BA red by DA green contrast for a dark angel and it ended way too dark. So I guess the VGA choice is best one.

Good morning Henry, great video. I always look forward to watching these on a Saturday morning. Quick question. How do you deal with touch ups and mistakes when brush painting over a gradient like you’ve used for the armour.(I’m worried about correcting my wobbly edge highlighting). Would I need to glaze in a correction because of the gradient? Cheers!

Hi David, when i'm army painting any mistakes like that i will either quickly remove with some water and a qtip, or if i've not noticed them then i'll use battle damage to cover it. It just means you can keep the painting rolling and not get derailed. If you don't like battle damage then it's certainly trickier! In that case its going to be brush blending, using glazes, like we show in the Powerswords video.

Have you tried the Modellers World Oil Washes? Really good product.Dry quick, matt finish and they smell nice.

I've not no. I mainly use W&N artists oil colours, and once you've bought a tube they last forever! I've tried some of the abteilung 502 range, which sound similar to the ones you have spoken of, the quick drying is achieved by them sticking less oil in there, most of the brands have a version of it, and I find that sometimes stuff targeted at hobbyists has a pretty big mark up!

Do you have a video that goes into more detail on the battle damage? Would the rhinox hide only be used on green armour, or is it ok for all colours? Thanks for a great video.

Rhinox is good on just about every colour. We go into much more detailed ways of battle damage on a lot of our Patreon videos.

Hey 👋 another great vid! Do you like the vallejo polyurethane Satin Varnish? I notice you use the gloss version and a different brand satin varnish in most vids.

When you did the leather parts I noticed you'd maybe applied another black coat atop the green airbrushing? Sorry I'm new to all this and quite interested in the airbrushing technique. If what I saw was true, do you just do another basecoat atop the airbrush layer? Or do you try and use abrasion to remove the green?

Hi Cameron, we’ll often re base coat the details black before brush painting them. This is done with a paintbrush and is largely to help with definition and also sometimes simply to make the mini easier to understand before continuing painting. I hope you’re enjoying painting as a hobby, welcome aboard!

Hey Henry. Is the Lifecolour thinner any different to Vallejo airbrush thinner or even Tamiya acrylic thinner? Does it give a better result? I've found Vallejo thinner seems to work fine for everything, even with Tamiya paints, but I'm running out so wondering if the Lifecolour thinner might be worth a try. Thanks for these videos! I like the condensed format. Oh, and I've started moving my light source from the zenith to above the right shoulder, it's so much more dramatic! That was a good tip.

Glad you’re enjoying it bud. Lifecolour thinner is just what my local hobby store stocks. If it was Vallejo thinner I’d just use that.

Yes, but the colour will be much stronger and it's easy to mask your preshade.

You could mask off and do the same or just brush paint but follow the same steps.

Works fine just brush. You just have to be careful not to apply it too much in one go. A hairdryer will help!

So I realize this video is older, but when I tried to put contrast paint through an airbrush it was super chalky. Does the 1:1 medium mix with the contrast change that? My PSI?

When you say chalky do you mean speckled? If so then you may want to increase your pressure and/or dilute it further.

@Cult of Paint no, sorry, I meant when applied by brush contast is almost glossy/satin finish, and by airbrush it's much more matte. I did say eff it and try this morning running a 3-3-1 ratio of medium to flow improver to paint, and it did look better, definitelymore translucent. I'm just not sure ultimately which look I like best. Airbrush is quite nice for speed and efficient use of paint tho

@@laxdfns ah ok. Yeah when you airbrush the contrast paints they lose their brush painted characteristics. You could mix in a drop of gloss varnish if you wanted a bit more shine.

@Cult of Paint oh, didn't know you could mix varnish directly in with the paint, learn something new all the time! My compressor doesn't have a pressure regulator built in to control PSI, aside from the obvious force it throws paint at something, what effect does the PSI have?

@@cultofpaint figured out what it was, for me at least. GW contrast medium through an airbrush causes it. Using vallejo airbrush thinner fixed the issue. Newb moment, oh well!
