Looks brilliant. I’ve known people who have done this and it’s worked brilliantly. I’m just in the middle of doing a chair myself and I think this is what I’m going to do with the seat pad rather than fabric. Great video 👍🏻

WOW!! I've been thinking about doing this. Ur the only one I've found painting over a darker print fabric and getting full coverage. Complete success. It turned out GREAT! Unfortunately my chair is black, and I'm so afraid of ruining it. I can't use it black though. So I'm now doing MY research. Thank you so much for posting this.

Today, we decided we would paint our Chicco stroller fabric for our baby. Most jogging strollers can be up to $400-500, we got ours for an easy $80, great condition and barely used. The fabric however was a navy blue.. worst of all my wife decided she wanted to keep the cream color on the middle, so it’s been the biggest headache! BUT the first coat looks outstanding. We look forward to the 2nd coat tomorrow

Hi, would it be possible to show us how's the chair holding up today, please? I'm thinking about chalk-painting some furniture and the only reason why I haven't done it yet is because I couldn't find a single tutorial or any video with "before" and "a year after". Or a few months after chalk-painting, at least. It all looks amazing when freshly done but I can't help thinking I wouldn't dare sit on that chair in my favorite black dress, you know? Thank you!

I’m in the middle of painting a fabric chair and I’ve done the first coat. I used chalk paint and sanded it lightly after and it’s feeling stiff and quite rough. I sprayed it with water before painting it too. How do I get it soft like it originally was?
@TheHomeGenie
@TheHomeGenie 6 лет назад
Hi Miranda. I am afraid I don't think you'll ever get it feeling as soft as it once was - chalk paint by its nature is quite thick, and so does tend to mean that things aren't as soft afterwards. The finish is different, but once you've applied the final wax, you should definitely be able to get a smooth finish though. Good luck - I do hope you're happy with the result!

Is there a way to make my fabric on my loveseat a little softer? I compared it to my undone one and the cotton velvet is stiffer. I did not finish with wax yet.
@TheHomeGenie
@TheHomeGenie 6 лет назад
Hi Lori. I'm afraid that it's never going to be as soft afterwards as it is before because of how thick chalk paint is - it does tend to make things feel slightly harder. Keeping the material damp when you apply the paint, and sanding it down lightly afterwards will help, but I'm afraid you'll never keep it feeling the same as before. I do hope you're happy with the end result!

Great video, love the chair and the results. I didn’t quite catch what you sealed it with? Is it flexible and soft to the touch ? Do you think you it could work on an old velvet fabric ?
@TheHomeGenie
@TheHomeGenie 3 года назад
Thank you - yes, I still love the chair, even now! The top coat is a Ronseal varnish in White Ash colour. The chair is flexible and comfortable, but it's not necessarily soft to the touch...sort of like a soft leather now rather than the original soft material. I think it could work on your fabric, but if there's any way you could trial it on a small patch, or a scrap of similar fabric I would absolutely recommend doing that first no question. Good luck!

@TheHomeGenie

Hi Astrid. Thanks for your question. The final texture is very different to how it was before - it sort of feels like soft leather, but I wouldn't say it was cold. It is still very very comfortable, and as I've said elsewhere has proven to be incredibly hard wearing. Personally I love it - it's taken a old chair that I couldn't use, and turned it into something that has sat looking lovely in my bedroom for years.

Hi there - thanks for your question, and for watching! I can only vouch for the projects that I've done of course, but in those cases, providing you let everything dry and it should, including the wax, then you should be absolutely fine. If possible, you could always try a small area of fabric that isn't seen for you to get comfortable with the process. Absolutely no issues at all at this end though. @TheHomeGenie
@TheHomeGenie 4 года назад
Thanks for the comment Karen...I can see your follow up comment that says you've seen the follow up video, and so have the products now. You don't wipe the wax off now, you apply it with a brush and give it time to set. You would want to rub it down once it's dry, but not a wipe (if you see my distinction).

My arm chair is full of patterns, Do you think my chair will be beautiful as your chair? Also I really curious to know if my chair will get soft feelings and natural look or tough and fake look after painting. Sorry for my weak English. Please please answer my questions. Thank you so very much 🙏
@TheHomeGenie
@TheHomeGenie 4 года назад
Hi Mozh...hard to say how it will look at the end, but I'm sure if you put the time and effort into it, you'll be happy at the end. The chair will not feel as soft and natural as before you paint it, but I personally really like the finish I now have on mine...but if you're unsure, see if you can find a similar patch of fabric to paint first, and just see how it dries. Good luck!

Hi Mary. Thanks for getting in touch! No, I didn't spray water before the second coat, but did make sure that the chalk paint was watered down enough to be able to cover the fabric easily - that did the trick nicely. Good luck!

Hiya. Thanks for watching. In my experience it is safe, but it's always worth checking the tin of the brand you plan to use to ensure that it doesn't contain anything that you wouldn't want it to, and that it adheres to all the local safety laws and restrictions wherever you live. Sorry I can't be more specific, but when it comes to safety, I would never want to give information that could ever be incorrect.

I don't want to have this leathery look on my armchair, do you think I can skip/replace this wax layer?
@TheHomeGenie
@TheHomeGenie 7 лет назад
I really wouldn't skip that part as it would mark very easily and probably come off on your clothes when you sit on it. The chair actually doesn't look that leathery - the lighting I used for filming gave it a sheen but it's actually quite matt. It depends on the fabric as I'm doing a dining chair at the moment which has more of a velvet fabric and that hasn't come out leathery at all although the fabric does feel quite stiff.

The Home Genie Hi!! Followed video etc and the chairs I painted looked wonderful but when sat upon them the seat paint cracked!! So upset. I thought applying PVA glue on top might help, then paint on top. What do you think??
@TheHomeGenie
@TheHomeGenie 5 лет назад
@@julieo219that usually happens when the fabric has a thick pile (which doesn’t work as well with paint) or because the paint wasn’t watered down enough. I don’t think applying pva will help I’m afraid but sanding it right down might help. Sorry it didn't turn out as you hoped!

Could you skip the wax step or is that what keeps it from rubbing off on your clothes?
@TheHomeGenie

Hi Ciara, no I really wouldn't skip that step. It protects the paint (as well as your clothes), and so without it you certainly wouldn't have the longevity, and as you suggest it would likely rub off too.

Does this work with a low pile velvety fabric? I try to paint my daughter lounge chair for her bedroom. Thanks
@TheHomeGenie
@TheHomeGenie 4 года назад
Hi there. I don't see why not, but as I've mentioned elsewhere it will change the feeling of the material - so just be prepared for that. As with anything, if there's a patch you can try it on first and see if you're happy with it, then do that...or even if you can find a scrap of similar material to try it on. I love my chair still, but I know that the change in how it feels may not be to everybody's taste (although I've not met anybody that's unhappy yet). Thanks for watching!

Hi guys - looks like I'm not needed here as you have all the answers anyway! :-) The honest answer to this one is that I don't know, and so the suggestions make sense.
