Learn how to paint feathers that look bright, colorful and realistic with this step-by-step watercolor tutorial.
This project, which is suitable for beginners, is an excellent introduction to painting wildlife in watercolor. It is an opportunity to play and have fun with some paint colors that you don't often use. As such, you will get to know these colors ready for when you do paint an animal or bird which needs them. The video also shows you exactly how to build up the structure of a realistic feather, this technique will really help when you paint defined feathers within your bird portraits.

Paul that is awesome, I can't wait to try it 😀 I would do a rainbow one like yours on a card or maybe 5 feathers in a row, each one a gradient of a single colour to get a rainbow row of them 😀 🌈🌈🌈

Hi, new sub.... :) Thankyou for all of your awesome videos. I am nearly 50, never painted (besides primary school....lol) and i live in a rural town in Australia. I dont have anyone near me to teach me how to paint (ive always wanted to be able to paint, just never had the time to learn)....so RU-vid is my best friend, and your videos are awesome as realistic wildlife/environment is what i am interested in....Thankyou once again, and i shall continue to watch all of your videos... :)

I've done quite a few this year, just ones I've found while walking. Buzzard, carrion crow and wood pigeon but I'm looking forward to watching the peacock demo as I've been given a lovely sample for me to attempt. The bronzes and other iridescent colours have left me daunted so haven't tried yet. X

@@angelacampion8709 Yes, as you may know this is how my partner Jo and myself find the feathers I use for my reference material, obviously for my much more realistic paintings. Regarding iridescent feathers, use transparent watercolours, not semi or opaque. This will allow the white of the paper to show through, helping that irrelevant feel. Paul 🎨

Did you use the professional or cotman set for this? I'm not sure whether to get a big set of cotman or a very small professional . I love how bright the colours are . Thank you
@TheDevonArtist
@TheDevonArtist 3 года назад
Hi Dawn, just to confuse you even more, I use both. :-) This all depends on what I have at hand and how rich I wish the colours to be. The Professional version have richer colours, with more pigment compared to the Cotman range. This also allows my paints (mostly half pans) to last longer. I do have affiliate product links it you wish to compare the two for prices etc, devonartist.co.uk/materials-i-use-or-recommend-for-realistic-watercolour/ this is with Jackson's Art Supplies but obviously there are many other places as well. Hope this helps, Paul 🎨
