Glad you enjoyed it! As I was painting them I was thinking about that, why feathers aren’t more extravagant in real life! But birds put them together in amazing ways sometimes!
Very beautiful. As to the line up the middle of the feathers; wing feathers have it off to the side, mirror image left wing to right wing. This creates lift in flight. Tail feathers have the line through the center of the feather for rudder and balance. Every feather is shaped for aero dynamics. Nature is an amazing thing.
Those are awesome!!!! You have quite the imagination for doodles. I'm 75 and have never doodled or sketched so original creativity is quite the challenge for this aging brain. Thanks much for sharing this wonderful piece of art😃
Thank you so much Kathy, it’s been a challenge for me too, but an enjoyable one! Hope you are finding copying what I do helpful, and that it will lead to you opening some of those doors in our brain that have remained stubbornly closed for so long!
Hi - I was born 76 years ago, but my brain still feels like about 25... But whenever I'm stuck for painting ideas, I love to start with copying Diane and that sometimes kicks off my own creativity! As someone else said... Keep you brush wet!
Every time I watch one of your videos I learn something new. Thank you! And I so appreciate your personal comments...no matter the topic. I must say I finally bought a set of the Kuretaki paints. I've been lusting over them for a long while. Having fun playing with them. The Nouveau set is still on back order in my past of the world ( Milwaukee Wisconsin USA).Grrr.
I found Art Nouveau set at Wet Paint. St Paul MN a couple months ago. Cost more than big box, as its a locally owned retailer. I ordered by mail as none of the stores in my area of MA offered these. Enjoy when you get them. Susan
WOW! WOW! WOW! Every step revealed something new, and the end results were so rich. I have kept a feather from a red tail hawk who often circles the sky above our acreage. I found it within days of our buying our little acreage. We have a hawks, eagles, pheasants magpies, and a varriety of smaller birds here. Never thought about painting feathers until now. The layering of treatment upon treatment is stunning. Thank you. Even one lone feather on a holiday card would be a gift in itself.
Thanks so much for your lovely message, Connie! I’m so glad you enjoyed the video. Yes, it would make a lovely gift! Especially if the feather meant something to the person who received it. Hope you have fun - I think they are a brilliant subject and I will be doing them again in the not too distant future! Thanks again for your kind words!
Finally ordered art Nouveau!! Will be here in South Africa in time for my birthday! I'm so looking forward to it, the colours are just so inspirational. You've been making me want them haha
Love the whimsical, playful nature of your feathers, Diane. A good reminder that art doesn't have to be so structured and precise all the time. Art can be both fun and spontaneous when we allow ourselves to just let go and not take painting and drawing too seriously. Thank you so much for posting and sharing your wonderful talent, Diane!
Painted this twice - with and without berries. Both turned out beautifully - love the combination of paint and embellishments! Makes a pretty card. Thanks for the inspiration, Diane:)
You are amazing! I couldn't, or did I even think of not listening to you and watching the entire video. You have done feathers before, but this is stunning! Thanks!!!
Beautiful feathers Diane...I must try these. Good point on doing it again, practice is always good and it's good to quote Bob Ross in this instance, "there are no mistakes, only happy accidents" and remember he did every painting at least two to three times.
Thank you so much for giving your permission to copy this. I did. As a very senior that took up W/C only a couple of years ago I'm learning so much. Again thank you.
Greatly enjoy the feathers. I appreciate how you talk about balancing the amount of embellishment. I think spatters would be great on this. I will be painting some feathers this week. Know that sometimes when we leave the video it’s family, laundry buzzers, dogs, etc that need immediate attention. I always come back to view more as you’re explaining the process is helping me find a way to build my own designs. Thank you for your generous work.
Yes Ann, I did wonder about putting some spatters on there but left it in the end - I think gold would look good spattered lightly here and there. I really appreciate your loyalty and commitment to the videos, it’s great that you comment and come back to them - I’m one of the worst for starting a video and getting distracted so I know what you mean! There are so many demands on our time! So thanks again for your support, means a lot xxx
Lovely 🍂 autumn vibes! The combination of berries and feathers is beautiful. Love the muted colour palette and the gold details. I appreciate you making the sketch available on your website -for free 🎉. It makes painting more accessible. We are having a full summer 🌞 day here 32°C, so I will use bright 😎 colours and see how that goes. Thanks Diane, I enjoyed this!
I love how all your subjects echo the natural world. Be it garden seashore or seasonal change. At present a fierce magpie is shredding my hanging baskets for lining for his nest . Feathers gleaming and full of inspiration. Sunshine and happiness in Tassie.
Hi Diane in Tassie! We have magpies in our garden too - I probably mentioned that in the video - they are nesting here - thieves! But so handsome - and there are crows, jackdaws and ravens as well. The farmers hate them but I like the way they clean up the field after the sheep. Have fun painting!
Really interesting different subject matter! Beautiful colors and detailing. I’ve taken to watching the videos on my TV which shows all the details and makes everything really pop.
Hi from Dallas Texas! I just finished this feather study and found it so refreshing and kind of you also to teach us for free. Gosh! We are lucky! I must send you a pic of my version of your lesson here. (May I?) I just got a 7"x4.9" Academy watercolor paper pad...so I had to scrunch in 4 feathers instead of 5! But like you said, paint it again if not totally satisfied. I will! Thanks, Diane....love your guidance!
Diane, I love your feathers. The colors are beautiful . I have made cross stitch feathers 🪶 but never watercolor. I think I will try watercolor. Thanks for the video. September is an awesome birthday.
Love your feathers. I am so excited. You mentioned that paint set is now available in Canada, I checked, it is. Yeah. I have been wanting it ever since you started using it.
Really lovely feathers, Diane. Loving your embellishments too. Honestly, you can't beat a bit of gold to really beautify a painting! Will give this a go soon. Thank you for another Gorgeous tutorial, Diane. Love, Mel 🍰🌻
Thanks so much Mel, you‘re right, that gold is the saving grace for almost any painting! Hope you enjoy giving this one a go, it was quite fun and I‘ve popped it into the „temporary frame“ where I put the ones I like for a while!
These are so pretty, I really enjoy watching you as it is so very relaxing. Would be beautiful in most any color, bright or subdued. Thank you for sharing.
Some of my first paintings 5 years ago were of feathers. My daughter has a whole collage of them framed in her bedroom and I recently painted feathers as a wedding gift for my nephew. But that won't stop me from painting more! I enjoyed this tutorial and really felt the fall vibe. It is HOT here in Chicago for now but we know fall is just around the corner.
This was lovely. I find your voice so calming. I’m going to try those feathers . And thank you (!!!) for the mention of the art noveau paints being available in Canada again. I paused the video to order them!
Brilliant Rita, definitely a good idea to seize the moment! They are rather popular and I expect they‘ll sell out again! Glad you enjoyed the video, you’ll love feathers, I can’t wait to paint some more!
Hey Diane! I think that spikey part of the feather is called a barb, calamus, quill? Pretty arrangement! Excellent info on leaf anatomy, like the center lines. I love that you share information, even if you assume we may know it (I didn't!). :) Fanna
@@DianeAntoneStudio Maybe think of the funny word "Kalamazoo," and that will help. That's easier to remember because of the Z. I chose my new primary doctor this way, because his name begins with a Z. That was 20 years ago and it was a brilliant decision, so try the funny word instead to remember! :)
So pretty and interesting! I was so excited when you said the Art Noveau set was in Canada, (been waiting forever) I paused the video, found it on Amazon, ordered it and came straight back to your wonderful feathers.😅 😊
Loved this video. I can’t do any art at this time🙁 since my hands and arms have issues (getting physical therapy, so hopefully I will be able to create in about 6 weeks), I enjoy watching you anyway and look forward to trying this.
I’m so sorry that you’re having such a lot of trouble with your arms and hands, that must be very frustrating for you. Hope the physical therapy works soon and you can get back to painting - but thanks for watching in the meanwhile, you can still keep learning even if you can’t practice yet. Sending you the very best wishes for recovery xxx
Hi Diane Was so happy to see you had decided to do this video. I love feathers and have been trying to teach myself how to draw them. Can't wait to get painting with you 🥰
These are really nice I love feathers and have wanted to try my hand on watercolour with my feather drawings, have done some Zentangled ones but now I see it's rather easy to just go for it. Thank you so much for sharing.
This is so beautiful and I love your videos. ❤ Often I hear you refer to going fast for various reasons and that you aren’t taking your time so we aren’t bored or something about RU-vid , etc. However, I do hope you would consider doing your tutorials at whatever length it takes to show us how to paint beautifully - even when it is loose - so that we can benefit from your experience and knowledge. Huge art hugs!! 🤗💕
Hi Trish, thanks so much for your kind words, hopefully you got enough information from this video to be able to create your own version with enjoyment!
I was pondering that exact thing! Maybe a old empty biro..? Or a cocktail stick..? I'm going to search my cutlery drawer to see what I can find! Mel 🍰🌻
Anything sharp will do. I was using a dip pen nib, not a fountain pen, but in my previous feather video I used a sharpened twig from the garden (sharpened with a knife), and also have used an old plastic card cut to a point, the point of a nail file, a cocktail stick, an old paintbrush sharpened at the non-hair end, a worn-out fine fineliner, lots of possibilities!
Hi Diane You mentioned doing a painting again - I’ve done that several times with videos. Sometimes I’m hoping to improve and other times I just want to try it with different colors. I look forward to your new videos.
