Andrew, thank you so much for freely sharing your knowledge and amazing talent with all of us. It is appreciated more than you know! Your videos and instruction are life-changing.
I am a beginner and started painting about a year ago and I truly understand your process and method or procedure, when you talk about beginning a painting by blocking in and laying down a foundation and then being very aware of warm up against cold colors, light up against dark, the importance of color and tones and at last round it all up with details... all of this will bring life, dynamic or drama and 3d to your paintings or drawings. I love all medias from Acrylic, oil, pastels, graphite, watercolor and colored pencils...and I think that this way of awareness helps you no matter what medium you use, and especially if you like to paint realism. so it is not only when you paint birds but anything you wish to portray in a realistic way. Your two portraits are exceptionally beautiful and I appreciate your talent to balance color and tones, not all people are gifted like that. Thank you...
You are so talented you make me weep with awe. I will never be as good as you but your talent inspires me to try and strive for a level of quality that you show really is possible. Thanks for sharing your talents through youtube and inspiring a wannabe painter who hasn't painted since leaving art school over 30 yrs ago:)
Thank you so much Andrew, having been a painter of small birds for some time I've just moved onto larger studies, this video has sorted out so many problems that I've been having, !! just placed my order for dagger brushes from Rosemary an Co.... love all your vids and tutorials, keep them coming...Cheers
I love your teaching methods every bit as much as I love your paintings & techniques, Andrew ! I would like to see you work on feathers that are more like those I work on, however. These birds have more of a hairy type of feathering & I'd really like to see you do a sequel - please - doing an Owl, or a Hawk, or an Eagle of some sort, close up ! I specialize in Raptors, so that's my personal focus & main concern. BTW - I'm now feeling much better about my Artistic direction & am getting some new work going ! I'm finding it's really helping me feel better emotionally & psychologically ! Not doing my Art generates a Black hole for me & I know it ! Thanks for your guidance , friendship & encouragement ! I've thought long & hard about your comment to go into Oils. I've decided I can accomplish much the same results using Acrylics & glazing mediums & not worry about having to become a chemist, as well as an Artist ! While I like what can be accomplished in Oils, I remember the works I did in college getting moldy & damaged in short time. I don't want that to happen again because I don't understand the chemistry involved - ie : " Fat over lean" etc. ! I prefer to be more spontaneous, which is why I went to Pastels in the 1st place. More recently, I've expanded to Graphite pencil - specifically & especially on Mellotex, then Colored Pencil - again on the amazing Mellotex ( Especially because I won my 1st award with it & that was a State level BEST OF SHOW ! ) & colored Pencil over Watercolor - enjoying the loose flow qualities of the Watercolor & then the tight detail I get with the Colored Pencil ! I also have Acrylics & firmly believe the same results can be accomplished in them, as I'd be able to attain in Oils. I'd love to hear your comments on this if they differ ! Recently, I've decided to try my hand @ Scratchboard & I'm happy with how that is going so far. I'm stARTing with black & white , but plan to advance to adding Airbrush in the near future. As you can see, I'm already spread pretty thin in the media depARTment ! LOL !
I watched this to help calm myself down. I am doing my first real painting and I just needed to watch a professional do his thing. I'm feeling much better now and am willing to start again.
My gosh, you are a lifesaver!! I really love birds, but I always get so intimidated by drawing feathers! Thank you so much for all of these amazing tips! 💖💖💖👏👏👏 Love the beautiful and stunning paintings you created too!! 💖👏
Self taught oil painter. Will be using your tutorials to help me paint my first bird, a harrier hawk. Surprisingly I have followed two of the three tips you recommend here! Your work has true dynamic to it, a real old master painter feel to each of your works. Very talented. Thank you.
You are so wonderful to share with us your amazing talent and great instructive videos. I am waiting for my portrait video to arrive. I am learning so much from your great clips. I am going to invest in Langridge oils next. Thank you for sharing how real artists achieve the wonderful results they do. Your paintings are gorgeous. I have watched your videos several times and made copius notes. I am painting almost every day. Your formulas are so helpful. Cant wait to get my Langridge paints. Please make more videos for sale when time allows. Your Faithful Fan, Anne Marie Lakey, Boise , Idaho
Hey Anne! You'll love what's on the way! I have heaps more content coming out. :) And more tutorials! Not long for your videos to arrive. New Shipment just came in.
This is probably the most worthwhile art channel in all of youtube. Please, continue to share your talents. If I may request, can you do one on techniques used in classical realism? I see the technique here somewhat delivering a similar ethereal glow you see in Carravagisi painters' work.
Thanks! Classical realism? Sure thing. one thing am playing with at the moment is deconstructing the techniques of my heroes so I can replicate them... I hope to incorporate this into more free content as well as tutorials.
That would be amazing. There's not a lot of content that goes through the techniques via a demo. Your content format is by far the best. One that talks through techniques quite well on the topic of classical realism is Ceasar Santos.
The best oil tutorial in youtube, but if someone dont have talent like you he will never gonna be able to create art like this. I mean you are a genius :D
Awesome advice. I am a nail artist. I am painting New Zealand birds on nail tips for a comp and want to make sure the fibres look life like. Thanks so much!
Thanks a lot for these videos. I really love how you get into details & analysis of technique instead of any quick hacks to simply sell the video. I am a self taught artist(not a good one yet ;p) and your videos are helping me learn painting by filling gaps in my knowledge.
Hi Andrew, hello from Portugal! I've been following you for some time here on youtube and have also subscribed your newsletter because I really, really like the way you share your amazingly huge knowledge about oil painting. This is one amazing lesson, as always. Thank you.
At 2:13, I love how you have one of your laptops streaming one of Joe Rogan's telecasts. I've seen this video several times, and continuously come back to it when I tackle one of the difficult bird paintings. Keep up the good work Andrew, you are definitely one of the greats..
Watched and listened to you, Andrew! Loved seeing the brushes and their brushstrokes used to create the feathers! The colors and values in layers were handled beautifully. Great control. :) How you went about painting the color opalescence was mesmerizing! Thank you so much. Love your communication skills too! :) So glad you are back!! :)
Thank you for hammering the importance of blocking-in into my head Andrew. It's so hard to stare at ugly blocks of color in the beginning stages, I just want it to look pretty from the get go! But it really saves time and energy later to get those colors down.
Andrew! Great instructions to remember every time! You are so good to share what you know and have fine tuned! I so appreciate your talent. God bless you, my Artist friend!!!
Absolument époustouflant !!! C'est du grand art. L'animal est vivant, vibrant. Les teintes sont d'une richesse et d'une profondeur incroyable. Bravo ! Je n'ai pas de mots...
Thank you! I've never painted feathers before, and I'm working on a bird right now. I found out I'm doing the first two tips rights. But I'm starting on detail too soon. Thank you, this really helped me!
You are such a nice person , a great talented artist who share his experience for other's betterment. Thank you. Your all videos are really useful . Big fan
Wow, Andrew. Truly inspirational. I paint myself and my interests are similar - birds and landscapes. I am able to learn more just by watching your work - Thank you.
thank you Andrew, for all your vids really have some great tips, gonna remember these for sure, also a large canvas painter, not necesarrily birds but might get some photos of local kingfish now and use these feather tips
Awesome Andrew! So very helpful! I'm in the middle of painting a very large cockatoo that I photographed in Puerto Rico. Colors bouncing all over it's white feathers from the pool and stucco walls surrounding its perch. Never occurred to me to use dagger brushes. I'm off to buy some large ones now. Thanks for the tip. Love your videos. - Jennifer, Memphis, TN - USA
Hi andrew! Thank you so much for your content! Theyre very helpful especially to me whos still a student. Love learning from your videos. I hope you continue sharing your knowledge with us!
Thank YOU!! I have been painting birds, and not really happy with the results. But your three tips makes all the sense in the world! Can’t wait to start over after I buy MORE daggers!!!!!!!
Is there more video footage of you painting the hornbill available? It would be so useful to see it as a timelapse with the steps more broken down. Beautiful job!
Lovely video, lovely painting. I am too detail oriented! Thanks so much for these. How on earth and why people hit that thumbs down button is beyond me. Some people... Your videos are wonderful Andrew, I so look forward to them. A bright spot in my week always. I also forward them to a friend who doesn't seem to understand about the subscribe button. LOL. She loves them as well so thank you for her also.
What can I say Carol? Haters gonna hate. As long as I have beautiful people like you commenting on my content...who cares! Not me! Thanks so much for your kind words... feeling the love! :)
