As someone who also has been refinishing furniture for year, I thought this was one of the best beginner tutorials I have ever seen. I get a lot of calls from friends who attempt this process who get some guidance from the paint stores. And their projects are a hot mess! ❣

I literally just finished a large dresser yesterday. It’s real wood, so I sanded it down with a palm sander 60 grit/100 grit/220 grit. Thoroughly cleaned and primed with 1-2-3. Next day (yesterday), painted black, two coats, 2hours apart. This morning it looks fantastic. I’m waiting another 24 hours before I put drawers back in.

These nightstands look great. I have two nightstands and a dresser that I want to flip. They are particle board as well. I’ve got suggestions of NOT to use water based primer on particle board but rather an oil based one. I see you’ve used water based here. What do you suggest ?
@salvagedbykscott

If you’re dealing damaged or exposed particle board you should definitely use BIN shellac based primer.

Bestie. Can I give a video suggestion? I often have difficulty determining the types of surfaces to sand and how much sanding to do. For example in this video you did a very quick scuff sand and in some videos you spend 6 hours of labor sanding. How do I know how much sanding needs to be done on the various types of wood surfaces? Thanks!
@elza6072
@elza6072 29 дней назад
It just depends what the goal of sanding is. If you're sanding to take off leftover paint or after you fixed some of the damage you'd spend a lot more time sanding and changing between grits. But if you are sanding to smooth a surface like here after the primer or the paint was applied then you'd obviously lightly sand because you don't wanna take the fresh paint off you just want to give the next layer of paint a smooth area to sit on

You are an amazing teacher! Even with years of experience (although not full time like you), I learn so much from you. And Even if they are reminders, it is SO helpful. I’ve never tried those rollers because of the fuzz. But the trick to wash them out before is so easy- but brilliant. Whey haven’t I thought of that? 🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ I tried the Alkyd paint because of you and loved it. It has a little learning curve when you are used to chalk paint, but my piece came out with such a beautiful smooth finish. Haven’t put it up for sale yet, so we will see how others like it. 😊 This is one video I’ll be saving, for myself and to share with friends and family who are looking to update a piece when I don’t have time to do it for them. This was a great tutorial for me today. I have a TV stand I bought about 12 years ago that has that paper finish on MDF. I thought about painting it and after watching this I know how to do it and hat products to use. One question, do you know how long a painted piece like this would last with regular use. I’m just wondering if the paint would peal after some time?
@salvagedbykscott
@salvagedbykscott Год назад
If you care for it properly it will last forever. Use felt pads on bottoms of decor, coasters, no harsh cleaning chemicals, etc. If you’re hard on your furniture surfaces, it will chip and peel just like any other finish would.

Beautiful and clearly explained as always. I am curious why you used white water based primer under a dark color with exposed particle board. In other videos you used clear shellac to both seal the particle board so water based paint won’t make it swell again and because it takes more paint to paint a dark color over white primer.
@salvagedbykscott
@salvagedbykscott Год назад
There are tons of different primers and the KILZ that I chose acts like an oil or shellac based primer but it’s an easier to work with water based formula. I could have used clear shellac, the spray shellac primer or the oil based KILZ but they’re really pricey and I’ve trying to save them for “worst case scenario” projects. I’ve never found that I need more paint to cover a white primer either. Full coverage is full coverage 🤷🏻‍♀️
