Today, I'm showing you how to paint furniture in 6 steps. I know it's hard to believe that it's even possible to paint furniture in just six steps! Most of us believe that the whole procedure takes days to accomplish and requires special skill. Well, I'm here to tell you this quick video will have you painting furniture like a pro and get it done in no time. With this video, you learn how to master prep and painting without any extra steps. You achieve a durable, flawless finish on any piece of furniture that you're trying to revive.
Here's a beginner's guide...
What type of paint am I using? I'm teaching you how to paint furniture with spray paint. Yes, spray paint! Don't be afraid, you'll soon be applying a professional finish - with spray paint - to all your tired furnishings. The reason why I love using spray paint is because it allows for a super fine finish. That means it leaves the grain on surfaces in tact. For example, I have an old oak desk that I'm painting and I want to preserve the texture of the grain. If I use latex paint - that tends to flatten out as it dries - I will have a large, uninteresting, smooth surface to look at when it's done. By using the super fine mist of an aerosol propellant, I can maintain a finish that's interesting to look at by preserving the grain.
Once you target the perfect piece of furniture to paint, it's time to choose the correct primer. It's the key to the success of your project. Even though paint companies claim that their spray paint includes primer in its paint, don't be fooled! Primer of this type is useful in hiding some stains but has nothing to do with how well the paint adheres to your project. I share my fool-proof method to get spray paint to adhere to almost ANY surface with the correct primer. You can even use my recommendation if you want to know how to paint furniture without sanding. Or, can even use this primer if you want to use chalk paint on your furnishings.
Everything you need to know...
Whether you want to know how to paint wood furniture, plastic furniture or glass, I share my tips and tricks to get a gorgeous finish. I let you know the biggest painting mistakes to avoid with using spray paint. I show you all the tools you need to get the job done properly. I have six fast and easy steps. Since they aren't very involved, you accomplish each step in a timely manner. There is little need to wait between steps. I make it easy for you to get on with the rest of the projects in your day. I don't complicate any of the steps and almost anyone can do this. There are many inexpensive items that will help you get the job done right. For example, a furniture dolly is the perfect item to use for moving heavy furniture around as you paint. It makes the entire process mobile and moving right along. Paint a drawer, roll it out of the way and then paint another. A furniture dolly allows for an assembly line-like process and keeps the paint process running along smoothly. Well you made it look easy, I have my great granddaddy’s old dresser, I’m 62 and he had it before I was born, I have the original mirror that’s with it, even the tiny nail that he hung his tie on is still nailed on the side, its been in my utility room since 1992, I look at it every time I go in there and think some day I’m gonna do something with this. My granddaughter came home from the Navy for a visit a couple weeks ago, and she was begging for things that belonged to my parents, parents that I have, I did part with a couple of churns, an old singer sewing machine, and a few more things, but that old dresser was what she wanted, I said someday it’s yours. Now you have inspired me to do something with it, I don’t know a thing about restoration, but I can sand and paint, I have a few odd pieces that I could put together and have a full size bedroom set, all that’s needed is to make it the same color, I know it was a lot of hard work but this Ga. gal is ready💖

E Carroll, You're making me so happy today!! I love being a tiny part of restoring old things and making them useful again. My desk was in my workshop and I did the same thing for years - walk by it and shake my head "some day...". You (and your daughter) will be so thrilled to see the wood painted. It's clean, fresh and more useful than ever! It sure beats a giant restoration project and if you get tired of the color you chose, you can always change it - easily!! I'd love to see your project when it's done. You can email me pics to renee@reneeromeo.com, if you'd like. Paint is a great way to make a bunch of different furniture items look like a cohesive bedroom suite - you're going to do a great job!! Thank you for this wonderful note. All the best, Renee

Renee, I will be looking at good solid wooden furniture with an understanding of how much easier it is to keep the integrity of the wood and yet make it more attractive without sinking ages of tedious work into it. Always amazed at how beautiful all of your projects are. Thanks again Renee for the inspiration

Hi Rina, Yay! I've recently discovered Facebook Marketplace and I'm hooked! I'm currently looking for a piece of furniture to turn into a hutch for my kitchen. It'll be painted too but I'll use a different method for it. I'll be sure to post a video of whatever I happen come up with. The wood really tells the story, I think. I'm so glad you enjoyed this. It's so fun to see the before and after - in this case it WAS a quick transformation! You'll do an equally beautiful job!! Thank you for all the kind words - much appreciated, Renee

Hi Renee, beautiful job. My friend moved and asked us if we wanted any of her old wood furniture. My daughter loved this small end table because it had a drawer in it. She wants me to paint it pink. I will be following your steps. Thanks for the video!

Karen, How wonderful! I just love the look of pink furniture. I think this desk would even look better in pink too. Your daughter is so lucky! I'd love to see a pic when you're done! Now I want to paint something pink... 💗 Renee

As usual nice and bright! A roll-top desk of that quality could cost thousands. That is a fine job done. Loved the video!!

Hi Nancy, Thanks for the feedback! I'm always trying to improve the quality of my videos so thanks for noticing. My husband wouldn't part with that desk so I had to get creative for its re-purposing. I finally found a permanent spot for it that wouldn't drive me crazy! I actually love how it turned out and that it blends in with the environment instead of sticking out like a sore thumb. Thank you for the nice comments - as usual - always appreciated!! Have a great weekend and give your puppy a hug for me, Renee

@@ReneeRomeo Yay, My puppy a schnauzer I named Schautzi, and he is a handful, should of called him Arnry. The other dogs are so patient with him, he just loves to bite. I bought him all kinds of best toy for puppies that cannot harm him and he never plays or chews on them just the other dogs. he is getting so big, he is suppose to get 15 pounds and NO more but it seems he is getting so big for just 3 months. What is best is that Dad likes him, he usually is rather could care less about my little buddies , but he likes Schautzi. I think it is because he is SO arnry. Cannot wait untell next video, I love watching your projects. How do you like your new home? Lots of new projects ?

@@nancystaggs8605 He sounds like fun - arnry or not! Puppies always make the house full of life. Our new home is full of cat activity. The baby gets picked on by the other two but she manages to hold her own. I think the next video will show how to make a bed but I also have a large project in the works with Lamps Plus and a local cabinet company - so it's a toss up which one will be next. I'm remodeling our basement bar area to make it more efficient for parties. I'm so excited! See you in a couple of weeks with more, Renee

Lorraine, I'm so happy you enjoyed it! I've been meaning to do this restoration project for years. I wish I had done it sooner - the desk looks so much nicer than I anticipated. It didn't take very long either. What was I waiting for?! Anyway, thank you for this note. I always appreciate feedback - good or bad - but good is better lol. Have a great weekend. You certainly made mine! Renee

Hi Renee, it looks a million dollars now and I bet looks gorgeous in your beautiful home. I did something very similar many years ago and now, once again you have given me inspiration to do a few more projects I have put on hold for too long! Just curious what region you live in if I can ask? I always look forward to you posting your videos.

@@lorrainedash5736 Hi Lorraine, I'm so happy with this transformation - it's been a project that I've been meaning to get to for years. You totally get it (lol) but that's just how it goes sometimes. It didn't take long to do but just thinking about it made me cringe. Anyway, it's done and I regret not doing it sooner! You'll be so happy you got to your projects too!! So, I live in the Metro Detroit area and we get a pretty Fall here. The colors are just starting to change and the air is getting crisp. We have apple festivals everywhere you turn. It's a pretty spot to be this time of year! Hope all is just as pretty in your neck of the woods. Thank you so much for asking, Renee

Renee Romeo Hi again and thank you for nice reply. Sounds lovely where you live. I remember doing that part of the world when I did geography many many years ago..The Great Lakes I think. My uncle used to live in that area, from memory Lake Clare or something similar. I asked as I may be in St. Louis visiting daughter early next year. Perth is starting to get warm here, it’s spring and I think 30C today..the wild flowers are so lovely and looking forward to the beach in Summer around the corner. Look forward to next video. ❤️

Yes - the great lakes. Michigan is known as the land of 1,000 lakes. You're referring to Lake St. Clair which borders Canada. It's beautiful with all the sail boats during the summer. You can see them from the waterfront in Detroit. Detroit is booming now with businesses, shopping, accommodations and wonderful restaurants. If you're ever in the area, I'll meet you for the best pancakes ever! Perth sounds beautiful. I'll get there one of these days... 🙂
