Love these videos, so relaxing to watch you go through everything step by step and how to brush up mistakes. As someone brand new to the hobby, I'm looking at the various things I'd be getting to get started, namely looking at speedpaint 2.0 and some brushes and a handle and such and which spray can to get. Is there any chance you could do a little video going over what you'd suggest to start off with paint/accessory wise?

Sure! I've been thinking I should make a "how to begin" type video sometime soon, hopefully that will help! In the meantime, my quick suggestions are: Speedpaint is a great place to start, I'd suggest only getting a handful of colors at first and get more when you need them. I like using large brushes for speedpaints (size 2 to 4ish) but that's just because I've gotten very used to it. I think larger brushes help to apply it more smoothly but don't worry if you feel more comfortable with using a smaller brush. I like cheap brushes but I do notice a difference between brushes that are cheap and brushes that are way too cheap. Last quick thing is to go easy on yourself 🙂 I've painted hundreds of minis and I still make tons of mistakes when painting. It's easy to look at something you painted and see all the things you did wrong, but everyone else will be looking for the things you did right!

Paint Garrus! I am very new to painting and feel like he could be a challenge considering he is two-toned black and brown.

Sure! I've got a few core box heroes to get through first, but I'm looking forward to painting Garrus. The doberman look should be fun!

Nice, another Guards painting video! These came out looking amazing, and the figures feel like they're almost made for having contrast/speed paints used on them. The red glow effect on their faces (especially on the big guy where it shines onto its arms and fists) is excellent. What do you think about satin varnish on their body to make them even more "icy"? And do you varnish these in general? I can imagine especially the heroes are getting handled quite a lot over time when playing the game.

Yeah, contrasts or washes definitely feel like the way to go with the blue minions! Good point about the varnish, I haven't ever brought that up in my videos yet. A satin varnish would look great to sell the effect a little more. I give each hero a quick matte varnish after I'm done, but I don't bring it up in videos because I'm honestly not sure it's necessary. I've handled unvarnished plastic minis a decent amount without seeing any damage, the main problem would be the colors fading over time when exposed to sunlight. I'd say a varnish wouldn't hurt but there's no need to go for multiple coats, just one quick matte varnish coat then call it a day.

Hello, great video! A question, when you say "4 parts X to 1 part Y", how are you measuring this? Do you use a dropper? Or just by the number of times you dip your paintbrush into the pot? Thanks!

I go for ballpark estimates, I am never super precise with mixing ratios. But yep, you got it, usually with dropper bottles I measure by number of drops, and with paint pots I usually treat one "paintbrush pot dip" as roughly one drop of paint (or two drops if I'm using a big brush like a size 3 or 4 round brush to grab the paint.) Hope that helps! :)

Very cool look. Which brushes are you using for contrast paint? They seem to be quite big.
@PaintingWithBennett

Yeah I use the biggest brushes I can get away with. I think one was a size 4 Army Painter brush (the one that comes in the speedpaint mega set) and the others are anywhere between size 2 or size 4. I don't use really nice expensive brushes for contrast paints, I usually use older brushes or cheap synthetic ones. Army Painter is decent, but I also like the Priceton Velvetouch brushes.

Is the citadel paint handle worth it, if you are mainly painting board game miniatures like the ones in the video? Did you "glue" the real base to another one to make it stick to the handle? Thanks for the video

Normally I don't love how overpriced Citadel stuff is...but I do really like the painting handle. That being said the Red Grass Games handle is what I'd buy if I didn't already have the Citadel one. Either way I really like having a fairly ergonomic painting handle, I'd say if you spend a good chunk of time painting minis it's a worthwhile accessory. I sticky tacked the mini to a spare base underneath it, then clip that base onto the handle. That way when I prime the mini (or paint the base rim) I don't have to worry about a bit of the base being covered by the handle. Glad you liked the video! 🙂
