It looks great, but I find myself having a problem with contrasts making really ugly stains and pools when you put them on top of lighter colors, especially with flatter surfaces. I really like your trick with drybrushing in order to clean all that crap up, but I wonder how to deal with the problem when using different colors than yellow, and still going with contrasts.
About 90% of my work uses mostly Contrast Paints, and I can tell you the trick is using the Contrast Medium with your paint. It allows it a longer drying time so you can spread it around more evenly. Without it, the Contrast stays where it is and pools. Another trick is to not put much paint on your brush and then kinda mop with it. The blotches are caused by excess paint pooling and not being spread evenly. So you can mitigate this by using the Medium to spread it evenly, and avoiding excess paint. That being said it's best to work in patches on the model, making sure it's smoothed out before moving on to another part.
@@DarcyBonoCreations Hey! Thank you a lot for the tip, I definitely need to try that! I wonder if Lhamean Medium for glazing with normal paints would work as a replacement for contrast medium - in any case, I'll simply grab a bottle next time I'll be buying paints in the shop, but that's the only thing I have at home right now.
Oh you definitely can use Lahmian, I frequently do. It changes the viscosity a bit and makes it a more "flowy" than with Contrast Medium but it works just fine. Anything is better than zero medium!
@@DarcyBonoCreations Awesome! I'll get right to the testing then. There was this painting event where I live yesterday, awesome place to watch pro painted minis - but it also makes you ashamed of your own minis and motivates you to bump up the painting / at least try to do some progress.
Tried this out and the pot of Imperial Fist contrast I’ve got absolutely does not go on smoothly like butter, and doesn’t seem to be covering nearly as well as yours. Insert very confused expression.
What primer are you putting it over? Also, are you shaking it well before application? And I really don't mean to insult your intelligence, but I've has this happen multiple times...you're certain you're using Imperial Fist Yellow? I had multiple instances of people saying they weren't getting the same results, only to find out they were using the wrong paint (Iyaden Yellow for example).
@@DarcyBonoCreations Not primer, but two coats of P3 Menoth White Highlight done over black primer. I was shaking it well, but possibly not quite enough? I don’t know… how much shaking does it require? 😂 I ended up troubleshooting with a few people on Discord and the issue may have been that it wasn’t quite as solid a coat of white as maybe it could have been, and potentially also the shaking. It IS Imperial Fists yellow, I am sure of that. No big deal. I’ll just go back to the old standard regular yellow brush paints.
@tinyfishhobby3138 Yep, the problem is the black under layer. Using Contrast over dark undershading is fine when you're doing it with a dark, cooler color like blue. But black desaturates the hell out of anything you put over it, and really warps warm colors like yellow. If you're going to do undershading with a warm color like yellow then I recommend a warm brown followed by the white highlight layer. The black is going to turn subsequent layers of yellow, a sickly green regardless of Contrast or traditional acrylic paint. Basically, since Contrast Paints are semi transparent they work best with a light primed mini.
@@DarcyBonoCreations I really appreciate all your help, thanks so much! Will know better next time for sure. It’s a unit of Templar Brethren I’m working on, so at least here it’s only a few bits that will be yellow(doing the assault legionary scheme from Horus Heresy: Extermination).
You can just base coat it with yellow if you'd prefer, and then move on to the orange-brown shade. However, unless you have an airbrush or yellow primer, it's just way faster with the IF Yellow acting as the base coat.
this technique makes so much more sense to me than the commonly recommended base > zenithal > highlight > contrast, which frankly looks terrible outside of youtube.
Imperial Fists were my first army back in 1989, yes I'm old, at the time my painting process involved yellow paint straight out of the pot all over, then a bit of silver on the guns, finished off with a goblin green base. Each model took about 1 minute. They weren't good...
Aaay! 89 my birth year 😄. Yeah that sounds about right for all of us pre internet childhood kids. I really wish they'd bring back Goblin Green just for nostalgia sake. Warboss Green is close but not quite the same 😔
Oh wow this is great! I tried a test marine with just Imperial Fist and it just looked too flat, so I abandoned it. I'll definitely revisit that test model now with this technique. Thank you!
This is the first time I've seen something painted with the new Imperial Fists yellow, it's very impressive! Never thought I'd see a yellow paint cover like that. Cheers for showcasing it like that. Very nice terminators as well!
I like the style of this :). I wonder how much different it would look if you started from a powdery pink instead of the ivory. Might be able to more depth in your yellow with the same amount of steps.
Thanks! And yep, I actually already have a video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Tq3Y0dJIEpc.html For the terminator bases I did exactly following except.... 1) Used Agrelland Badlands and painted it Mechanicus Grey instead of using Astrogranite in the first step. 2) Applied Huge Miniatures Weathering powders in splotches in random areas (specifically Peat and Jet-black variably mixed together).
@@DarcyBonoCreations I straight-up thought you got access to an unannounced multi-part kit! I was like, "Ooh, you breakin' you NDA, girl! Watch out, now!"
This is a really cool method to paint imperial fists, thx. I started painting my first army according to this and by the 4th squad, I'm starting to get quite good results. What I tend to do is after the first wash-drybrush-yellow phase do another light drybrush and apply another layer of yellow, but really lightly, mostly avoiding the edges completely. This helped me get more consistent gradients. Worked on Dreadnought really well.
I haven't played for 10 years . And people trying to bring me back with the kill team . But after this video I think I'm gonna paint some new imperial fists! Thanks! For Dorn! For Him on Earth !
Every time I watch you or another seasoned painter use contrast paints it looks very smooth and uniform, when I use it I get splotches and looks like crap. I threw all my contrast paints in the garbage.
It's all in using medium to help it spread evenly and not applying a lot at once. GW really didn't do a good job communicating this and made it seem like you can just slather it on and have it look good. I work on a little area at a time so I can ensure it's not pooling, and then move on to other portions. Also this particular yellow is one of the single pigment Contrast Paints so it goes on much more smoothly than other, but provides less of the Contrast effect.
Ok, that settles it; I'll be getting that yellow contrast paint this week. I've been painting IF on and off for over a decade and this must be the easiest way I've seen yet. I mean; I used to do them from a black undercoat over brown. Took 20 layers sometimes! 🙄 A bit masochistic in hindsight, but then again: rather fitting for IF 😅
This was a greatly useful video! For anyone interested, I played around trying to find the formula if using Speed Paint instead of Citadel Contrast. Burnished Red seems the right substitute for Goregrunta brown. I think the ratio of Burnished Red to Speed Paint medium may be as high as 4:1, however.
Thanks! I actually cover Black Armor in the following video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JvQjhXezdic.html If you don't want a cold black like that one, you can stipple with a light grey like Administratum Grey instead of a pale blue.
Thank you so much for this video, I plan on my Drukhari with Imperial Fist and knowing Imperial Fist is one of the contrast paints that goes smooth on flat panels is great for my vehicles.
honestly, step 1 of this guide is the most important to make proper yellow. Prime the miniature with white - and then even terrible citadel's averland sunset will be smooth and cool. love the guide, hopefully i'll get my hands on new leviathan set and contrast yellow. not for imperial fists, but for lamenters though
Why didn't this color exist back when I still played 40K? I spent an entire summer experimenting with all sorts of ways to get the yellow that I liked, and this makes it so simple. I saw your video about using makeup brushes for drybrushing a few years ago, and it was a _game changer_ ! I get _so_ much better (and faster) results since I started doing that. Thank you!
Contrast > wash > white > contrast is a very nice one that deserves to be explored with many colors (your note on the specific nature of this one notwithstanding). Well done.
I generally strongly dislike Contrast/Speed Paint videos, but the way you used them here was absolutely brilliant. I'm completely reassessing my approach to painting my IF army! Thanks!
This was the first video of yours I've watched. Really well filmed, excellent clear narration, not pretentious at all (unlike some). So I've subscribed :-)
Great tip to do the black first before starting with the contrast. Big time saver/mistake saver step. Also, love seeing you use a wide flat brush for contrast paint on larger surfaces! For people who have done scale modelling (i.e. Airfix style stuff) this is a no brainer. Rounded brushes are great but not for base coats on flat areas.
very good content and instantly became my new yellow recipe, yet I have two questions when I am trying myself 1. for the shade part, i try to use nazdreg yellow contrast without thinning it down, but I couldn’t get the rich orange ish yellow after finishing. 2. i use white scare as drybrush, but it is quite a watery paint and i end up a bubble like result, yellow in the middle surrounded with a white circle. May I know what white paint you are using
Thank you! 1. I don't understand, I didn't use Nazdreg Yellow in this recipe. It's a totally different color than Gor Grunta Fur which is orange brown. 2. I use Pro Acryl Bold Titanium White by Monument Hobbies. AK Interactive White is good too.
Ms Bono, ABSOLUTELY enjoyed your tutorial. Direct, clear and simple. I am a much older hobbiest with no aspirations of becoming some pro painter, I just want to create goid looking models with the least amount of work and your style does that for me...thank you!🎉😊
@@DarcyBonoCreations i am aware that you are extremely talented and capable of surpassing this beginner technique... what was refreshing was that you took the time to consider us folks who are only starting or may be intimidated by higher leveled artist and you made it relatable. Thank you again.
This is a really great technique, worked well with Seraphim Sepia as an alternative (the recesses don't get quite as dark, but still okay). I had two issues, but I think these will improve with more practice: 1. Imperial Fist didn't spread quite like how it did for you. It didn't seem to flow quite as well, blotched/pooled a bit and felt a bit inconsistent. I didn't get a nice smooth finish. 2. I really didn't give the model anywhere near enough of a dusting to have strong highlights come through. I tried using Corax White if that matters? Thanks for the great tutorial!
Thanks for watching, glad you liked it! Yes, using Corax White does matter quite a bit. Corax is closer to a light grey and is not a pure white. That being said you're going to end up with more muted highlights.
I've been looking for a way to paint rainbow deamons, and at first I thought, well I'll do some bright colors and break from tradition. But then I seen the mini in your banner and elsewhere on the internet and it's perfect. but I don't see a video on what colors you used, or how you did it. is there a video or a short somewhere? the colors used and so on?
Oh hehe, I painted that on my birthday after several glasses of wine so I was in a creative fugue. That being said it's literally all of the brightly colored Contrast Paints (Luxion Purple, Doomfire Magenta, Scorpion Green, Aethermstic Blue, etc) all blended together following the color wheel. So for example, place doomfire magenta, immediately put down luxion purple next to ot and blend where they meet. Then on the other side of the purple put down a blue (Talassad maybe?) and blend where those colors meet.
Thank you! My whole channel is basically all Contrast painting 😄. I've done similar armor ones for World Eaters (30k & 40k) and black armor on Leagues of Votann. Red Armor ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DfCHx2_JcZY.html Black Armor ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JvQjhXezdic.html
Thanks this is very helpful! I want to reproduce this on my Votann armours with: Averland Sunset base, dry brush with screaming skull, shade with seraphim sepia and then i don't know if need another layer with Averland or Yriel Yellow.. i think the shade its unclean and i don't know the exactly order or the proces.. thank you!
This was excellent! I’m getting into painting and the First have always been my favorite chapter. I hear Yellow is a tricky color, but I’ll be sure to use this video when I assemble my Imps. Thank you!
This is an awesome video, I love the final effect! You mentioned an old video about adding weathering / battle damage to yellow armour you were going to link- where can I find that?
The mini look amazing! Did you try to do an undercoat of pink for dark zones and white for highlights, and then paint yellow contrast over it? I think you can get the same effect without the sttipling + re-painting... Just my two pennies! :)

The kit I used for the head and cam was the Imperial Fist upgrade sprue. The powerfist was from a Gravis Captain. www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Imperial-Fists-Primaris-Upgrades-2020 www.games-workshop.com/en-US/space-marines-captain-in-gravis-armour-2022
Awesome! You can absolutely use this process on a dreadnought. Maybe just use one drop more of the Contrast Medium to lessen the streaking/pooling when applying the Gore Grunta part. It will look really awful when it dries by the heavy stippling still breaks it up.
Would a shadewash with Agrax Earthshade instead of the brown contrast paint give similar results? Alternatively, I have Contrast Wyldwood and Snakebite Leather available.
Not really. Agrax is a red brown while GorGrunta is a burnt orange/sienna so you're shadows are going to be a bit muddier. Agrax is also not saturated enough to provide the same level of definition (you'd have to do two coats).
@@DarcyBonoCreations Thanks for getting back to me. I was doing inventory and I need Contrast Medium, so I will pick up your brown too since I have to make the trip. :)
@@DarcyBonoCreations I’ve found that if you’re in the speed paint range, hardened leather is an almost perfect replacement for gor grunta brown. Mix it in the same ratio of paint to speed paint medium as you did with your paint and it looks lovely for a fair bit cheaper. Can’t replace imperial fist though, it’s just too good
Very nice. I've had great success doing loads of Lamenters doing a yellow spray, thinned riekland fleshshade twice, then bringing up highlights with yriel and flash gits. Maybe your method will grow on me but nonetheless great tutorial 🙂
Aw well thank you so much! I mainly do commissions so can't release videos regularly enough to please the algorithm gods. That and video production just really isn't my thing 😅.
@@DarcyBonoCreations What you’ve done with your video editing is more than enough I think. You get across everything perfectly, I wouldn’t change anything. The frequency might not please the algorithm gods but I’ll look forward to your future videos nonetheless! If your commissioners don’t mind it it’d be neat to see the process on them sometime.
Thank you for this. I am yet again purchasing paints based on a great tutorial, and then sulking later when mine looks nothing like it :D I am encouraged to see the fist yellow contrast isn't like the others, I have been trying to use green today and it has been a blotchy nightmare, to the point I gave up and decided to try paint them as imperial fists.
Great video and explanations ! This Imperial fist yellow is just so satisfying to use xD. Can i ask what colors combination should i use if i want to use this technique for a salamander scheme ? I'm not good enough at colors theory to spot the good nuances . Thanks
Sorry to put this in this video but did you used imperial fist too for the yellow tyranid that got shown in WHCommunity? Would you mind making a guide for that tyranid because is so beautiful with the yellow and blue.
Thank you! That was actually Nazdreg Yellow. It gives much more contrast (shadow and light) than IF Yellow which just gives a bold yellow. I'll have a guide ready soon.
Thanks! I actually have a video on painting white as well, if you haven't seen it yet: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UxkbEG2GwMI.htmlsi=hfQhjLnms69XX5oj
Thank you! Gor Grunta Fur is a GW paint, but if you mean closest GW Shade paint, then the closest is Reikland Fleshshade. HOWEVER, I do not recommend using the new shades. They dry very glossy and are insanely transparent so it will take at least a couple layers to build up the saturation depicted in the video.
That’s genuinely excellent. I’m just getting back into it after a long, long time away, and (like a damned fool) I’ve decided to try lamenters, since I never really got along with yellow paint and I’m a masochist XD This is a great process. Looks really great! Thanks!
