Om goodness! How beautiful is this session. I cried throughout the whole dedication to your Mom. I appreciate that you do this, but as you said RU-vid and Patreon is your full-time job now. Some other pastel artist I see on RU-vid that only show so much are selling their works but on top of that they are still willing to take people through the process. I appreciate all of the artists on RU-vid and learn everyday.

Thanks Susan. I’ve been gone from pastel for a while. Life has been busy and I did 10 small watercolors for a show at the local library. I didn’t see how I could do 6” pastels to be displayed and available for sale so I did watercolors and they were very popular. Now I’m looking forward to getting back to pastel. I’ve learned a lot from this little video. For one thing I am greatly undersupplied with pastels and can’t afford to buy more right now. So thanks again.

While retooling my studio of late, I did a deep dive into the currently available pastel brands. I stopped researching Richeson when I found they are manufactured in China. I did find some references to limestone on the MSDS which brings up the question of fillers. With the cost of pigments as they are today, does the statement "too good to be true" ring loudly?? Mungyo is yet another brand to have flooded the market, made in Korea and with Kaolin Clay on the MSDS. Now, I do not mind Kaolin in my pastels, just want to know when it is present as with Rembrandts. I just like to know what I am purchasing. Now having said this, the cost of a brand cannot guarantee quality, necessarily. But that is a different discussion for another day. PS love the luminosity of that central lemon. Nice!

Wow, thanks for that information. I love to buy American made whenever possible. And I truly love the Terry Ludwig brand of pastels. The people at that company are awesome. I also love buying from Mount Vision Pastels which is made just around the corner from me in Tampa Florida. I do really like the Jack Richardson hand rolled Pastels… wish they were made here as well.

Hi Susan, thanks for this informative tutorial. My question relates to blending the colors, in this case, using the hard pastels…what about the concern of ending up with a muddy color instead of clean, crisp colors?

That’s a great question Toni. To get the brightest, what I call “punchy“ colors, it is best to use a pure pastel stick of that particular color. However, I like to blend as I stated in this video, to create new colors and often to purposely neutralize colors. The harder, Prismacolor Nupastels, are perfect for this. But you can blend colors of many different brands as well.

I recently bought this set, which is just beautiful. I am just getting into pastels and am more of a beginner - intermediate artist. I am a bit surprised though that there is no red in the set - purple, violet, etc and I think just one oragne. I was trying to do a beach sunset and could not replicate what I saw in the sky. Or should I have been able to with the colours provided?

I should have watched this video earlier today. You said the darker yellow is a brown, today morning I was trying to paint something in dark yellow but couldn't figure it out haha. Later I opened Photoshop and swatched the shadow of a yellow flower, that's when I found out it was brown. I was a bit surprised. Anyways, watching this video now.... The irony of life. 😅

Hi Susan, Thank you so much for this beautiful video and painting. I'm a newbie to pastels and all I have are Prisma Nupastels and a couple of soft pastels. Do you have any suggestions how to approach this painting with mainly hard pastels? I love this small but mighty painting and can't wait to get painting!

Hi Nan, I’m so glad you liked the lesson. I find that a lot can be accomplished with using just prisma color Nupastels. Here’s a little video where I painted a pear with only 10 sticks. You could approach the lemons in a similar way focusing on keeping the lightest colors and values in the places where the sun is shining through. Hi Susan, Thank you so much for all your nice video's and information. I made this painting twice, the first one with the lemons and the second one I changed the painting a bit and made some oranges with light shining through and both look great. I'm happy with the result. I love looking at your video's and so is my neighbour. We both enjoy it a lot and admire your style. I have a question, I did the underpainting with a mix of watercolour and gesso on aquarelpaper, no problem. My neighbour painted a canvas with watercolour first and added the gesso on top. When she started painting the gesso did come off. We don't understand this, do you have any idea? Best regards from Marianne, The Netherlands.

Hi De.... I'm so glad you are learning, painting and experimenting! I'm not quite sure why the gesso came off of the canvas, unless it perhaps was an unprepped canvas. I don't usually paint on canvas surfaces, but it might be best to apply a coat or two of regular (white) gesso to the canvas first... let it dry thoroughly and then add the clear gesso. Hope that helps and keep painting!

I don't understand why people say oils and acrylics are opaque mediums like pastels. There's nothing about oil or acrylic that's more opaque than watercolor, and certainly not opaque like pastels. Drying oils are transparent, and acrylic binder turns transparent when it dries. The exact same pigments are used for oil, acrylic, and watercolor (with a few exceptions). All pigments are opaque to some degree (look at dried watercolor pans - if the pigments were truly transparent, you could see through them like colored glass, but you can't, same with dried oil and acrylic paint piles). The only thing that makes oils and acrylics more opaque than watercolor is how most people lighten their dark colors with white instead of additional transparent binder, but that's not always necessary, and not a reflection of the inherent transparency of the mediums themselves. In short, there is nothing inherently opaque about oils or acrylic. It's all about the pigments you use. You can use "transparent" pigments in oil or acrylic and you can use opaque pigments (including white) in watercolor. i think it's misleading to imply that oils and acrylics are inherently opaque like pastels.
