In this Hobby Cheating Tutorial, I take you through how to set a color palette and execute a miniature that is in the dim light of the moon. This is a fun challenge as your normal painting light is much brighter, so we have to do our best to desaturate and fake the effect. Hope you enjoy!

What's it like single handedly elevating this hobby? it must be surreal knowing the impact you make. I wouldn't be painting how I do, make videos or look at color the way I do without you. Thank you Vince - you're a good man.

"Brown is a naturally warm colour", you know, I have been thinking about this recently. We typically associate brown with a reddish hue to it or maybe a bit of orange as it is frequently used for leather, but brown can be whatever you need it to be. As brown is a mix of all the primaries it can really lean in any direction. You can have a blue brown, violet brown or green brown, along with red brown and yellow brown.
@rodyle1313
@rodyle1313 Год назад
Bob ross did this a lot without explicitly saying so. You'd see him mix a brown constantly to fit the scene.

Blue browns are some of the most beautiful colors anywhere.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella Год назад
Yep, brown is pretty versatile.
@CFTim
@CFTim Год назад
Not really, any brown will have more red in it than any other primary. You can try it with RGB colour sliders. If there's equal amounts of each you get grey. If there's more blue than red, you get purple. Of course you can have some browns that are more bluish than other browns, but all of them will be primarily red and therefore warm to some extent.
@Bloodfencer1990
@Bloodfencer1990 Год назад
@@CFTim Yeah, but do those RGB slider work on the principle of light frequencies or pigment? Colour mixing is very different between light and pigments.

BINGO!!!!! I have been fighting with a 1980s Burger King Kids Menu toy Frankenstein's Monster in a grave yard in the moonlight, and of course he is in black and dark brown, so this really helped. Also, I need to find the second video, as I am fighting with a ca. 1812 British soldier in a dark forest green uniform, in front of a camp fire... and not getting it right, so as I watched this, I thought the answer to a darker uniform hidden in deep shadow by firelight would be a full moon to the rear, and then at the end you say lets add a fire! Looking forward to it!

Vince, you mentioned mixing in black and grey for almost everything to desaturate it. What about complementary colors? Won’t they pull the original color towards desaturation or brown? Could that also create the warmth or cold you are seeking,in the shadows? Perhaps you might consider doing a color wheel tutorial from your perspective? I’ve seen other PaintTubers and their explanations, both fine art and miniatures, but I suspect your style would teach us even more. I searched and found complementary schemes, and of course your videos on specific colors.

Love your videos, they inspire me anytime I get paint block. But had a request about skin patterns. As in say fish type two tone stripes. What is a good method without the colors just blending to create a rainbow?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella Год назад
I am not sure I understand exactly what you mean, but generally with those patterns like snakes, you just want to follow the scale line and use two fairly distinct colors while still respecting the overall volumetric light.

Great video, this will be very useful when I finally get around to painting my Cursed City box! Question though. How would you do this with TMM (both silver and gold tones)? Can't really highlight it with a pale blue or desaturate anything, can you? I always struggle with my metallics on OSL pieces.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella Год назад
It's honestly very hard with TMM, but for the silver, you need to carefully apply a glaze to shade it way down for most of the surface and leave a small volume of light and a bright silver edge. You can also give it a very light blue glaze.
@tommcdonald7143

Because of the similarities in color desaturation, I think a lot of this can be applied to painting minis to appear underwater.

Very nice tutorial and such a interesting topic! What if the cloak is made out of wool? Let’s for example say I want a huldra blue wool cloak?👀 less white and black and more grey? For softer contrast? Do I kill the color of huldra blue or can I kinda keep it?
@VinceVenturella

You coudl soften it slightly, but I would also change the texture to more hashes as well.

Could I ask what Brush and Size you use here Vince. Point looks brilliant.
@ChiccoLocMi
@ChiccoLocMi Год назад
Awesome and informative video as ever! Do you think this technique would work with a grimdark style, too? After all, a burnt umber wash would desaturate tones and provide warm shadows, which would contrast well with cold highlights
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella Год назад
Maybe, I will say it's much tougher, most of those browns are WAY too rich to really sell the effect, you need the colors really sapped out of things and you can't really change the color of those unless they start quite desaturated. Part of the challenge with something like this is that it's a very intentional lighting effect that has to be pretty carefully controlled to sell.

How did you deal with attaching the Cape afterwards? I built mine but I've decided to put it together fully as I couldn't see a way of attaching the cloak after painting that wouldn't involve me having to repaint that entire area as it may need sanding, filling etc
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella Год назад
I just put it on with a little plastic glue, then used a small amount of varnish to seal the game and paint over, wasn't too much of an issue.

2 questions if I may. I'm painting a heldrake in a moonlight ambience, but more exaggerated with colours like purple, turquoise and dark green. First question is I'm thinking of shading the gold trim with oil paints specifically black, blue and perhaps green and afterwards highlighting it with white oil paint to sell the desaturation and reflective nature of gold under moonlight. Should I stick in just black and blue for the shading or adding green too will help? Note the base is Vallejos green gold liquid series. Second question is can I highlight the base in pastel blue and be done with it due to the exaggerated and not realistic nature of the moonlight or should I add another highlight? Thanks again
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 месяца назад
So that is a very complicated scheme, the real key is that moonlight desaturates and kills the color from things. If you're introducing a lot of colors, that is sort of going the other direction, that is fine, but it won't really have a moonlight feel, which is okay. Now, to answer your questions more specifically, the white with the gold will be tough, but I would desaturate the gold and use some heavy colors as you are describing, make the shadows broad volumes in the gold and the highlights smaller. I think you could certainly bring a little green in, but I would keep it minimal. As to the highlight, I would limit how much you go into the bright ice blue, I would hit that high cold highlight, but only in maybe a spotlight area. Then have the other areas have more of a mix, going to a max of 50/50 or something in that area.

Moonlight isn't blue. Our moon is for the most part a very light grey and reflects the light of our sun, so it is like sunlight only much, MUCH less bright. Also, there isn't blue environmental light from the sky like during the day. The shadows should be black, because the light reflected by the moon is not strong enough to create bounce-light from the environment in most cases other than in the snow. The highlights and mid-tones should be way more dark. Actually, moonlight would make a very bad lighting scheme for minis. It'd be better to paint them like they are in darkness illuminated by a very strong blue-tinted LED-light one or two meters above them. Oh wait - you did exactly that. 😄

This is probably a pretty dumb question, but I think it will help me better understand what you’re doing here. Why wouldn’t you paint the mini in a very desaturated way, and then just airbrush a pale blue from the direction of the moon?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 8 месяцев назад
Because 1) moonlight isn't blue, it's a very cold light that will tend to bush existing colors into the more blue spectrum, but when you stand outside at night, you aren't blue. 2) The airbrush is a poor way to do this kind of light for the same reason you wouldn't try to highlight a normal mini with just an airbrush. It's not a fine enough tool. We are just painting light, same as when we paint minis during the day (we just tend to assume a pretty average K neutral light), but we are still shaping and painting the light. :) - Hope that helps.
