Hi Ron, can't thank you enough for that. It's a real boost to receive compliments like that as this one was a complete beast to put together. I'm still struggling with new audio hardware and had to adjust the audio in each segment, and am gradually getting to grips with a camcorder I've had for a few months (got into trouble with the wife for buying) and am now starting to see the benefits of. The funny thing about professional grade gadgetry is that you can't just bung it into automatic like you can with my good old consumer stuff. They expect everything to be tuned in manual mode, which isn't always straightforward when you're in front of the camera rather than behind it. Anyway, thanks again. I honestly don't think this would be worthwhile if I was just filming into a vacuum with none of the wonderful encouragement that you and others taking precious time out of their days to deliver. 👍👏

I did some labouring for a builder friend on a shop renovation, something I had never done before and I learnt so much from him over 4 weeks. I followed his instructions for mist coating and they are identical to what you did. I was surprised at how little mess I made, which is very unusual for me, and like you said the finish at first looked patchy but dried perfectly.

Great tips Charlie. Question. I will be painting bare plaster walls shortly. I used the product "MAKE GOOD JOINT FILLER " that doesn't require taping on a small section of plasterboard that wasn't freshly plastered. The instructions say to use a primer on the joints before painting. Would this be PVA primer or thinned out emulsion??
@grafnemilligun9183
@grafnemilligun9183 3 года назад
@@imabeliever3 that make good stuff is awful!! I gave it a coat of zinseer 123 before painting. The difference with that stuff is that you use it for tape and jointing and not skimming. That means you would have fresh plasterboard which I wouldnt mist coat as the high water content would cause the cardboard cover to go weird.

@@thomassmith3711 I used 2 coats for the kitchen as we liked the colour so we didn't feel the need to paint again. However in the bathroom we used 1 coat on the plaster and then painted over it with a Dulux trade paint. It works well as a primer and normal paint but it only comes in white. You may find that brush painting is a little off as we did have to go over the edges and corners again with a normal trade paint but for larger wall areas it works really well with a foam/brush roller.

We have just moved into a bungalow and found exactly what you describe of pealing paint from plastered walls. On scraping the paint off sadly very therapeutic the plaster is the same shade as newly laid plaster. Previous owner me thinks was a bit of a skin flint. Great videos with clearly explained hints and tips. If it works for you then it works for you. There are always someone out there who will shoot you down!

i just painted a large extension with vaulted ceilings with the p bare plaster paint from screwfix. for a 5x5m extension with ceilings upto 4.3m (with a walkin wardrobe and ensuite within it) i used 2 full tubs and a third of another. but i was so impressed with the coverage and how flat the walls looked afterwards i was pleased i bought that. mist coating is tried and tested for years and clearly is cheaper but the screwfix stuff is excellent

Thanks Charlie, any advice on hairline cracks on new plaster?
@CharlieDIYte
@CharlieDIYte 4 года назад
Yes. That stuff I recommended in the video Easi-Fill. I did a recent video on it here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6Omsv5-NN9k.html. You can get it in a 5kg box, with 1kg bags inside. Mix up a small amount and apply with a continental filler knife, scraping the excess off so you're leaving no excess on the surface except in the crack itself. Then a very light sand (may not even need to sand) with 180grit and paper and then touch up with your wall paint. If you're lucky you will just be able to spot paint the crack without having to do the whole wall. Links to the filler knife etc in the Description below the video linked above.

Sprey the top coat yes but the mist coat still needs rollering off or it won't key in. So might as well roller the mist, only benefit to sprey the mist is speed of application but it can dry so quick, you either need someone following you to roller it or down the spreyer and pick up the roller every 10 minutes.

How come your plaster is brown ? What a struggle. We plaster with white plaster here , and that is so white , it hardly needs paint. But we paint it anyway with Histor or Flexa *Monodek* , (local brands) one or two times, great stuf (always use these brands, DIY own brand , sucks) Always on special offer at all our DIY shop at around 32 euro for 10 liter or 10+2 Regular roller, no fancy stuff. Always work, also in my garage boxes without heating, lasts for ages. And when there is too much to do, I borrow a pro spray machine from a friend or let him do it hehehehe.

Hi Charlie. I watched the video last week and this morning tried it out on my freshly plastered bathroom. plaster was completely dry. I used 1L of trade white with 0.5L water. it went on great with a brush for the corners and a regular roller for the rest, went on well and gave a good coverage with both methods of application. the only small problem is that it dries almost instantly! there are a couple of imperfections that can be sorted out before the first full coat. Thanks for the video.

Again, another useful video with worked examples. Channels such as yours and Skill Builder have shown that thinking through tasks, testing and measuring (like your silicone application video) will yield the very best results. Unlike far too many in the building and decorating trades you have shown that good durable finishes and outcomes are not the result of luck and speed. Keep up the good work.

Good video Charlie especially your comments regarding PVA. My dad taught me to plaster. I used to go to work with him in my school holidays and worked with him off an on ever since till he retired. He is now 86yrs. He always advised to thin cheap paint down to seal fresh plaster, so I just do as I was taught. It just makes perfect sense

Another great video, thanks! I've had good luck with the specific bare plaster paint (Leyland I think), to the point where if you were having white walls anyway that one coat would do. Where I have put a colour over it I only needed one coat to get a good finish. I did try watering down emulsion in the past and didn't have much luck, but it seems that may be due to my crappy equipment - I'm certainly going to invest in some decent stuff once the shops are open again.
