Thx man, finally someone with a good and concrete tutorial on how to paint the yellow armor and the green skin well, I've been searching for these techniques for like weeks now, almost. Cheers brother
Just to let people know. Or even you @The War Gamer. Using a conversion chart your primer is actually more like Citadel Ushabti Bone. Zhandri dust is a bit darker. Nice video though, picked up some casandora yellow today so I am looking forward to painting!
Wow.. I haven’t been into a Games Workshop store since 94 or 95. They have obviously come a long way since then, but I really thinking getting back into it. I still am fascinated with the Orks, now Orruks, but I think I’m going to pick up some Bonesplittaz and some Ironjawz. To be completely honest, I just miss painting. Either way, love the paint job man! I’ll definitely be checking out much more of your channel in the days ahead!
Really enjoyed watching that Ironjawz painting tutorial. Wasn't too crazy about the yellow color scheme but your method made it pop. Loved that you used Deathworld Forest, stracken green and athonian camoshade for the skin.
Thanks, I've always preferred to paint my Orks with a more olive skin tone than the forest green that GW goes for so I thought I would share my technique.
I know that I'm a year late but...after some experimenting, the closest paint to "Army Painter's Skeleton Bone Primer" is "Citadel Paint's Ushabti Bone" not "Zhandri Dust". Zhandri dust WILL work, but it after being washed, it comes out as a VERY dark yellow..."Ushabti Bone" when washed comes out exactly like the video.
Wish I had a use for these guys I only got Warhammer quest the original and silver tower and shadows over hammerhall and shadespire. I've got the warchanter orruk guy and the Ardboyz team for shadespire but I would love these.
Great video as always me and my brother play different games but both play bolt action these videos have helped us increase our painting skills keep up the great work and can't wait till the next video !😁😀😄
Great tutorial. Just about to start my ironjawz army so will be going for a similar paint scheme. A bit difficult finding some vallejo equivalents for the blue pieces of armour.
Just discovered your channel and watched this video. Loved it. The olive tone to the skin and the rich yellow armour that is not too stark is great. Gonna see what other videos you have made. :)
Absolutely brilliant as always! The skin is perfect (spot-on alternative to using "Warboss Green"!), and the armour is such a perfect application of glaze paints - along with your other videos, illustrating similar techniques. Absolutely stellar, keep it up! =D Edit: *correction - wash! Not glaze, my bad. Nonetheless - amazing result!
+Jokiva I've always had a preference towards the more olive ork skin as opposed to the dark green that we often see so I thought I would share my technique in this video.
+The War Gamer And I'm very glad you did! While I don't have a lot of experience with orks, I've always used the more "traditional" Warboss Green method, but after seing this, I'll definitely have to try this out - same goes for the armour! As always, keep up the good stuff! =D
And I am completely agree with you. The usually "green skin" looks like... "paint" for me, not a good skin :) ps: Sorry for my bad english, my maternal language is french, but I try to ameliorate my Shakespeare's tongue ! :p
Great tutorial! Congrats! I am applying it to my brand new ironjawz army and it looks outstanding! Thank you so much!!! ^^ For future tutorials... How about Goddrak? I would love to learn to paint the dragon in green 😁
+The War Gamer For info the link to your patreon has a 404 error. Also, any change of a ghouls/flesh eater courts tutorial? GW haven't released a painting guide/paint splatter and I'm sure a lot of folks (me included) would be interested!
+Lead-Weight Thanks for the heads up, it should be working now :) Unfortunately I don't have any plans to tackle the flesh eater courts just yet, as at the moment I'm only doing tutorials for miniatures I have as part of my own collections.
Love the skin & armour, not to keen on those highlights on the trousers though. I suppose they'd look just fine from across the table but i'd have wet blended the highlights on the trousers and gone with a darker more blue-toned grey like Dark Reaper.
+Hawken Valhalla The effect I was going for was a shiny black leather hence the quite harsh highlights. But I agree, if I was painting black cloth I would probably have gone for an eshin grey or dark reaper instead (as I've used in my Kairic Acolyte tutorial)
Hey, just a question, So i had to go the zandri dust way, should i base something else before using casandora yellow? Im trying different ways to try and get your fantastic yellow, but cant really seem to get there with the zandri dust.
I love the yellow technique. About how many coats of yellow wash do you use? Do you have a harder time with flatter parts of armor, like the Orc Ardboys?
It's been a while since I made this video but if I were to do it it again I would probably use the new Iyanden Yellow Contrast paint over the new Wraithbone paint, that would probably give a more vivid result.
Awesome tutorial, keep up the good work! :) Would the end result differ if I would use the Zandri dust undercoat spray from GW instead of the army painter? :)
Question, If i were to paint these in their red colourscheme (for the armor) Would you advise using a red primer? (mephiston red) Im not really sure how to deathworld forest would fair onto the red primer.. Thanks in advance :)
You will probably need to use a stronger wash of Casandora Yellow over Zandri dust to get a Yellow effect as it is darker than Skeleton Bone. Although it won't be as bright as applying over a bone colour. Alternatively you could paint over each of the armour panels with Screaming Skull first then wash with Casandora Yellow.
Thank you for all your tutorial videos! Your yellow looks really nice, on the other hand I don't want yellow armor on mine (cause I don't like yellow in general). What scheme do you think will fit nicely your grey-bluish shoulder scheme? I was thinking about red but I fear the miniature to be too dark... Thanks :)
You need a bright colour to contrast against the dark shoulder pad so red would work really nicely. Be wary however as it can make Orks look a little 'Christmassy' if you use a more forest green colour for their skin. If you do go for red armour I would recommend following similar steps to those I used in my Word Bearers tutorial: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Y93BpBu1Duo.html
Thank you for your advices! Btw your deathworld green skin is the best green skin I've ever seen, so I will use it :p I'll take a look at your Word Bearers, thanks a lot and keep up the good work!
Thanks to this video and your Word Bearers video, I managed to find a paint scheme to my orruk. There is some details to improve, and some mistakes because I'm a begginer, but hey, I have a result: dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/38544922/first_orruk.jpg Thank you again :)
How does this Yellow technique work for larger areas (such as a imperial fist tank), is it suitable? If not - what paints would you recommend for a larger surface area?
I'm yet to try it on a larger area but traditionally washes can be tricky on large flat areas. I would instead recommend a basecoat of Averland Sunset followed by a wash of the Cassandora yellow and highlighted with and Yriel Yellow then Dorn Yellow for the sharp corners.
Why is it when I use nuln oil shade it just makes my model look terrible and have like camouflage type of black spots all over. Am I not putting enough nuln oil or something???
Quick question, sir. How much of the head are you painting before attaching it to the body? Just basecoats to get the colors right once you highlight or painting it completely before attaching it?
The only important things to paint before attaching it to the body are the tongue, inside of the mouth and the teeth. Once these harder to reach areas are done then you can attach the head.
