I know it is probably a noob question, but would love to see a video on how you take care of your brushes and make them last. Love the content man. Congrats on the growth this last year. Sorry to hear about your mum, but I’m sure she’d be proud knowing the enjoyment you bring to others with you content. Be blessed dude.

Great video - very methodical and well explained as always. I love these technique and recipe videos, it's a great way of finding things that I want to do or improve in my own projects. Things that I would find useful are faces, robes, flesh and weathering (organic stuff rather than battle damaged armour) - they're all things I need to do more of to improve! I'm thinking of doing some Ogor Gluttons as a side project to do just that.

Do you have any tips for painting a brass cap badge on a Napoleonic shako cap? There’s very little moulded detail on my minis, and a blob of brass/gold on the black cap just looks like a blob of paint. Edge-lining with silver may help a little, but what colour is best to paint in some detail so the badge looks three-dimensional? Umber, Sienna, Black?
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides

how small are we talking? Do you have a link to the minis so I can see?

Can you help me? How would i add some use or rust to this? :)
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides 9 месяцев назад
So, brass doesn't rust as it has no iron. Aged brass would become darker and develop blackening due to it's copper content oxidizing. So, I think the answer you're after is you would want to darken the recipe down and use a black wash instead of brown and not use the silver to brighten things but instead start with a darker brass tone to begin with

Find it quite difficult to paint with metals. The paint quickly becomes goopy and clogs the brush, and worse still, fills the details on the model. I’ve tried thinning with water, thinners, matt medium, etc, but nothing helps. Any hints appreciated.
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides 9 месяцев назад
You're not alone, it's a problem a lot of people have. When painting with metallics I find I need to increase the level of rinsing I do on my brush and the level of attention I give to the paint on my palette. What I mean by that is, as you've found the paint can become gloopy especially when you try and thin it down. That's because by thinning it down you've given the metal flecks more liquid to move around in. This is great for getting it smooth onto your mini, but on your palette, what it's doing is sinking to the bottom all the time and clumping up. So, you need to keep remixing it together to prevent this from happening and regularly flushing your brush so you're always working with the paint at its optimum. Another big factor is the brand of paint. Not all metallics are the same, far from it. The best overall brand for metallics I've found is Darkstar Minis. The main difference they have is the size of metal flecks in the paint. They are tiny. This helps hugely and makes them much easier to work with. They are lighter so they dont constantly want to sink and clump and that lightness means they distribute more evenly when you paint them on your mini. That smaller fleck is also more in scale with the min, meaning the result looks smoother and more shiny. As an added bonus, the bottles come with aggerators included, which makes mixing them much easier. One last thing, steer clear of craft paint metallics while you're learning. They are not meant for mini painting and have all the opposite characteristics of the Darkstar paints I've just described. Oh, finally. Use a wet palette. A lot of people will tell you cant / shouldnt use metallics on a wet palette. But thats nonsense. It really helps. Hopefully that helps a bit. If you need more help, feel free to message me on my socials

Thanks for the long response! Yes, I made the mistake of buying craft silver and copper: both are utterly hopeless for minis. I have a Daler-Rowney gold ink which is rather nice, but it congeals on the brush within minutes. Another favourite is Citadel Leadbelcher, which I use for gunmetal parts, but it’s as thick as treacle. Guess I’ll have to start using my wet palette again, especially now that the winter heating dries out the air so much.

@@sirrathersplendid4825I really love using the Vallejo metal color paints if you can get them...they're a bit pricey but I've used loads of different metallics and those are by far my absolute favorite

How would you compare Vallejo's Chrome to Pewter from Dark Star Miniatures? Is there a point to getting both?
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides 9 месяцев назад
They are both bright silvers and pewter would certainly work great for this recipe if you don’t want to go and buy yet another paint (which I totally get) but Vallejo chrome is like no other silver paint. it’s so shiny and fluid, it’s crazy. You could use chrome to highlight pewter basically

❤❤❤ All your videos are not only educational but mesmerizing to watch you work. Each video I see more and more on how you work color theory, mixology, and approach to lighting. I've taken zero art classes, yet I feel more then prepared to paint my first army to a standard well past not embarrassing myself and towards being excited and proud of the minis. Love the 10 minute form. Mixology for hard colors is 11\7. Would be interested in a video to add to your hobby fundamentals of the color wheel and how to work it. What mixes with what. How to avoid making every mix brown 😄😄😄

That’s what I really want this channel to be about, making mini painting less scary and daunting and making people feel “I can do that” 🙂 The colour theory / colour wheel video is a great suggestion and I’ll see what I can do. Have a wonderful New Year. And I hope you’ll keep watching through 2024? 👍
