Before Kursk, the first Tigers to see combat were on the 29th of August at Mga, south of Leningrad. They were painted in Panzer Grey. Major Richard Märker led the first attack, but they did not fare too well as the ground was completely unsuitable for the Tank in the North. After the August attack, 4 of the Tigers were once again used in an attack that again failed, they were whitewashed over the Panzer Grey for the September attack of 1942. I must say after watching this video I think I will try this technique and create a replica of one of the tanks used around Stalingrad from the 502.Abt.

In fact I will probably use this technique on all my early war 1939-40 models.

hopefully it will prove useful! Panzer units during that period in the East is such an interesting subject matter!

That comes very close to the way I dry brush my models. Very interesting, because my biggest drawback on buying an airbrush (except for spending the money, haha!) was "losing" my dry brushing technique. So, it can be done in a way I can befriend with. Cool! Thanks for posting this, Shane! :D

+Non-Prolific 1/35th Scale Model Builder thanks Jens, not to worry my friend, I've found the paint brush has not been replaced at all by the Airbrush in my modeling just means I have different tools for the right job not at all my friend glad you found it useful :)

Yes, well done, more subtle and realistic. I like Shane's use of a dark blue and grey to lighten the base coat, he got a darker (not so blue) result, which I like.

Great video as always. I continue to learn from your tutoring! Are these colors appropriate for the early Panzer I’s and II’s? I want to do a Panzer II dio for the Invasion of France in 1940. Thanks for any advice.

Thank you! I'm no expert when it comes to the nitty details of German paint evolution but I would imagine its pretty close to what they would have had. I most important thing to keep in mind when working with Panzer Grey is not to push the highlights so far that you create a grey blue tone. As its very easy to lose grey tone

@@longlance67 Thanks Shane! I may just be getting to picky. By the time I weather it, there ill be a good dust layer anyway. Good point on the highlights! I hadn't thought about that! Many thanks again!

@longlance67

I not an expert on Panther though it is highly likely that they would have been dark yellow by that in the war

ya I have never been keen on the that blue hue that some modelers then overdo of late, it doesn't look convincing at all

I don't think this version of the Tiger tank came in panzer grey. Only a few very early prototypes that fought around Leningrad were in grey. You put the hatches of the driver and the radio operator on wrong.

I'll be able to live with it, was more an experiment on trying to create an interesting panzer grey finish
