One of the best grimdark space marine tutorials i've seen. End result is fantastic. Looks realistic and gritty, like it's actually been trudging through a battlefield.

One of the best parts about this is that it could easily be applied to other chapters such as the salamanders by simply changing the base coat color. All the grime could be used on anything with the right method!
@SpensPainting
@SpensPainting 6 месяцев назад
Yup, exactly! Generally you can use a slightly brighter colour than the standard colour for an army, apply the grimes, and you'll be good to go!

@SpensPainting
@SpensPainting 4 месяца назад
It works great on Tau! Definitely go for a higher value (brighter) version of whatever colour you think you might need as the grime will bring it down quite a lot

This looks amazing! I wonder if it would work with my night lords who I’m doing in Kantor blue 🤔
@SpensPainting
@SpensPainting 2 года назад
It definitely can do! The only thing with nightlords is that they’re quite dark usually so make sure to include some bright elements to add some contrast like lightning bolts, some bright metal scratches, glowy eye lenses or osl, that kind of thing. Otherwise it could end up looking a bit too dark all over, unless you like that kind of thing!

My paints have finally arrived so I'm ready to try this. Out of interest, do you varnish the model before adding the grime? Thanks!
@SpensPainting
@SpensPainting 2 года назад
Excellent news! You don’t HAVE to varnish before the grime, the thinner won’t react with the acrylics as long as they’re fully dried/cured. It can be helpful though because if you get a little rough with the cotton buds that can rub some of the paint off if it’s not fully dried, and it also helps to protect transfers

Awesome video, I imagined your painting stile to be more complex and take much more time to do so :D Im glad it's not so i'll have to try this too! How does your streaking grime compare to citadels typhus corrosion?
@SpensPainting
@SpensPainting 2 года назад
No it’s really quick! There’s so many models I want to paint that if I did them all with nmm and volumetric highlights I’d never get round to them so this is the style I’ve found that I both enjoy and doesn’t take me too long 😊 The biggest difference between them is that streaking grime is enamel based so you can do the reduction and remove it from areas that you don’t want it, whereas typhus corrosion is additive in that you add it to the model and you can’t really easily take it away. Typhus corrosion is really nice for adding some gritty dark texture to a model though which streaking grime doesn’t do
@nikr5598
@nikr5598 2 года назад
Inspiring tutorial, I now want to try paint some night lords using this scheme, do you think the model could potentially benefit from doing some edge highlights before all the weathering?
@SpensPainting
@SpensPainting 2 года назад
Oooh yeah a night lords in this scheme would be great! I can do, but probably not as much as it would for eavy metal or volumetric style painting because a lot of them will be lost in the weathering. I would probably go in after the weather and just add some small dots and selective edges as chips and scratches if anything, but give it a try! It’s always good to experiment 😁

Hi! I can't seem to find the Ammo by Mig streaking grime and dark streaking grime where I'm from. Are there good possible replacements from Vallejo or AK?
@SpensPainting
@SpensPainting Год назад
AK also do enamel washes like the Ammo by Mig grimes, but just be careful to check the colours match up. You want a brown for the Streaking Grime and a black-green for the Dark Streaking Grime
@davsto6375

I don't think you did in the video, but would you edge highlight the base blue before adding the grim, or just show the grim effect to be more of a lowlight?

Hey this is incredible . How well would this work with the blood angels scheme the mighty brush uses? I've been using his on thr indomitus box on my first warhammer painting ever and loving it but it is a bit time consuming. I'm not sure adding this will make it quicker though. Would this take the place of doing edge highlighting or at leas multiple layers of it since it's so grimy?

Functionally the same however the AK Streaking Grime has colour consistency issues (sometimes green, sometimes brown), and they have made some very concerning marketing decisions in the past

Do you varnish before adding the streaking grime?
@SpensPainting
@SpensPainting 2 года назад
You don't have to but it can help! The grime and thinner won't react with the acrylics, but varnish can help to reduce the risk of rubbing any paint off with the cotton buds.
@ahoymatey1234
@ahoymatey1234 2 года назад
do you recommend this method for a tank? and do you need to use a hair dryer for it to dry properly ( you mention this at around 6:10 )
@SpensPainting
@SpensPainting 2 года назад
Yep! I’ve used a very similar method on (most of) a sicaran. The only thing I did different was used a sponge to reduce the streaking grime because of the larger area. You don’t have to use a hair dryer for the enamels to dry, but it just speeds up the process. One of the great things with using this technique on a tank is that it adds a lot of interest to what can otherwise be big flat surfaces
@jamesbowles6601

The thinner itself won’t, but if you rub hard with the cotton bud it can

@@SpensPainting I rely on the...old techniques. Brush and pot.
@SpensPainting

The old techniques are tried and true! In that case I would go for Citadel Warpstone Glow. Using a slightly brighter colour will help to keep the contrast once the grime goes on

hi, another question for you, how do you handle this type of grimdark effect on skin?
@SpensPainting
@SpensPainting 2 года назад
It depends how I want the skin to look really. I usually do the skin first anyway, but if I want it to look mostly clean then I’ll use a brush and just brush on the streaking grime where I want it and remove any extra that gets on the skin that I don’t want, if I want the skin to be grubby and grimy too, I’ll just spray the whole thing in grime

I think grimdark style is my last hope at getting some models on the table. I’m hopeless at edgehighlighting, and if I’m being completely honest, it’s not really my favourite since it always ends up looking cartoony. Gods please let this work out, I’m so tired of buying dettol to strip my army lmao Edit: tried to follow along but teclis blue over black base coat really doesn’t look the same.
