Very nice! Speaking of black absorbing light and being hard to film, most people think that Vader's facemask is solid gloss black. It, in fact, has an alternating pattern of dark silvery gray and gloss black panels. This was done to give more definition to the face for filming. If you google original vader mask you can see examples of it.

I think the gloss on helmet was the way to go as in some scenes in the movies it is so polished

I haven't thought about OSL in that context before, and that totally makes sense. I do think that it was a really good call to do it here though. That spot of red does a good job of breaking up all the black and selling the idea that the lightsaber isn't just a big plastic plastic toy.

Very good video -I hope there will be more discuussion subjects in the future. Now, OSL. I actually had the same problem with it as Dr Faust, namely that when put in an environment with natural light, OSL, doesn't come to it's own. This became an issue for me when I was about to start painting the miniatures for Kingdom Death: Monster, which plays out in a pitch dark world, with the only light source lanterns that people carry around. Hoowever, I felt that in order to reflect the overall darkness of the gaming world, I would have to use OSL, which I did (pretty well, thanks for asking). However, if I were to paint a model where the actual world s known or not defined, then I would probably skip OSL. This problem makes it quite important to set a miniature on a fitting base, especially if OSL is to be used. For example, a figure with a shoooting flamethrower should not get OSL if placed in the open, but in say a sewer or a cave? Absolutely, OSL all the way.

Object source lighting is useful if the subject requires it, for example, Shep Paine did indoor dioramas in a shadowbox. It's useless for gaming figures, and no use for my 1/35 armor or 1/72 Mecha. And there is NOTHING wrong w/ rust on Eldar- on the battlefield, stuff gets grimy. (been there, done that ;) )
