In this video we begin the painting process for the 18 inch Soundstream triple X sub basket! It was previously powder coated with textured black, but since the coating was already flaking off in many places, it was high time to redo the color with something bright and clean looking. Gloss white has always been a favorite! Enjoy the video tutorial and remember to STAY LOUD & PROUD
How To Paint Your Subwoofers:
Step 1: Preparing The Surface
- I already had the frames semi prepped before making this video. With the outside surfaces cleaned and sand blasted, removing the remnants of the foam surrounds is pretty easy.
Step 2: Removing Glue on Landings
- Each landing (both the surround and spider) had lots of different glues. I try my best to remove the leftovers in one large piece with a chisel and heat gun. This method makes work much cleaner with less fumes from alternatives like sanding or grinding down the adhesive instead.
Step 3: Cleaning Off Fine Bits & Pieces
- There's always small amounts of debris left behind when prying up the rubber or foam. A drill and wire wheel is a pretty cheap way to get the rest of the glue removed. But of course a power grinder with flap disc works just as well, too👍
Step 4: Washing Off The Dust
-Time for a quick shower from the hose outside! After all... we need to rinse off all that crud before sticking them 18s all inside the oven!
Step 5: Baking The Basket at 225!
-Yup, that's right. We're putting the sub frames into the oven to bake off all that newfound moisture. This helped evaporate all the stubborn water from the tiny cracks and crevices around the bottom spoke. Plus... with 12 spokes, there's a lot of hiding places!
Step 6: Taping Up The SAFE SPOTS
- Stopping the overspray with some blue tape around the upper and lower landings. Glue products stick way better to things that are completely stripped and sanded down to bare metal.
Step 7: Painting 1st Coat of Rustoleom
- Time to spray paint an extremely light first coat! Just barely covering the aluminum, peppering coverage with a light mist to increase the odds of a good initial stick. I used a container as a makeshift cone to prop up the frame while painting with rusto. Any brand of paints will work fine, but rusto is great and affordable. I got mine at walmart where they sell similar brands like Krylon, Duplicolor, Montana and Color Place.
Step 8: Adding Thicker 2nd + 3rd Coat
- With a strong base application, the second and third sprays go on thicker but not too thick. We don't want to cause any streaks that run or pool. Pooling is bad, but forgiving with this project due to the subs being mounted inverted (cones may be visible on some tho)
Step 9: Coating with Clear Coat
- Applying Spray Max 1k will prevent dings and scuffs down the road. This stuff has the hardest cure in the industry. Its harness is similar to that of powdercoat but from a spray can! 3 coats will be more than enough to create that deep candy drip look 👌
Step 10: SHOW EM OFF!!!
Time to check out the high gloss shiny goodness! I love how white is basically color changing as well. Change the LED light and magically have new colors!!!
