fantastic. I love videos like this with a nice dialogue clearly explaining exactly what you're doing and why. I was going to make a comment that I wish you would have left up the reference throughout or at least shown it again at the end compared to the final product, but I went back and looked and notice that you really just used the initial reference as a loose guideline. Which is a weakness I have as an artist, I hear things like "don't be a slave to your reference" and yet I probably do stick too close to the reference too often. It was interesting to see the ways in which you strayed from it and still ended up with a great final painting! Looking forward to catching up on your channel, I follow you on instagram but only discovered your youtube a few days ago.

Thanks Brad! I'm back here on RU-vid after a long hiatus and catching up on old comments. I like to sketch the initial large shapes of the reference and then go from there with what the painting tells me it needs. I'll occasionally look back at it but mostly just use it for the initial sketch and underpainting! :)

Bethany, I may have said this before (?!) but you are my 'go to' of all of the artists on here when it comes to learning about pastels. Simply the best! May I ask, when starting a piece, do you consider the dimensions/size with regards to standard size frames ( off the shelf) or is it a case of custom framing? Thanks

Hi Joe! What a nice thing to say, thank you! Most of the pieces I create here on my channel are on scraps from my collection so yes, would be a custom framing situation. This is great when you are playing with techniques and not necessarily paintings for an exhibit or for a larger studio work. Thank you for watching! :)

Oh, but when you create something that leaves you wide-eyed... wishing you have planned the size a little better! I experimented with some Conte soft pastels and found that there was more falling from the paper than staying on. Just about put me off pastels for good. ! Maybe I should try sanded paper and better quality pastels. Thanks again!

Hi Bethany, I'm enjoying your videos very much and feel encouraged to go play with my set of beautiful sennelier soft pastels, now that I (sort of) know what to do with them. I always thought soft pastels were oil pastels ha ha, and that your soft pastels were hard pastels. Well, anyway, do you ever use oil pastels? And how do you do small details? I find it so very very difficult to put in a small dot or dash of this or that. Also, have you ever tried painting on paper treatrd with clear gesso? I've heard it has a tooth and was wondering if that worked, I might ggive it a try. Thanks a lot and you're wonderful encouragement! Greetings from the netherlands, Frouke

Hello! Thank you so much for watching! I haven't used oil pastels before but I know there are probably some great tutorials here online. I have used clear gesso and it works well...it's a big coarser than I like but many people I know use it! You should try it! :)

Really like your pastels. I am a retired illustrator and I am trying to get a show in a gallery. I am wondering how you pay for shipping your work in the Airfloat boxes, do you add the box and shipping cost to your painting price?

No, not usually. I just make sure the price of the painting is enough to cover! :) The boxes can be used over and over. The shipping is just an unfortunate but very necessary charge! (also, I always always add insurance to cover the price of the piece *and* yes the box)

Bethany, I just "discovered" you today and love your amazing pastels. I'm going to learn a lot from you, but I really wish you would do some real-time videos, or at least some longer ones. I just don't like the time lapse. It is so hard to follow.
