Games workshop released a cracked effect black paint already, called mordant earth. Also try not to use a hairdryer, if you let it dry naturally it will develop a lot more cracks than with the hair dryer, and the cracks will have a more natural look to them rather than streaks. It does take a couple days to be completely done cracking though. I actually think the one you made in this video didn't crack anywhere near enough and didn't look as nice as some attempts I made or saw others make, and that might be due to the sheer quantity of Abaddon black you mixed with it, reducing the effectiveness of the crackle paint. Another effect that works tremendously well is to use nurgle's rot underneath the crackle paint, looks super nice.
@dukecoull9016
@dukecoull9016 3 года назад
Use the Mordant myself and you can vary your effects with the hairdryer, big cracks are best achieved with no hair dryer, smaller fractures seem to work well with one. Also the base varnish you apply before can have an effect the level of contraction “spacing” of the technical paint, gloss giving the higher contraction and matt varnish a bit less, still experimenting myself 😅

I actually liked the more subtle amount/size of the cracks very appealing!

I love watching these texture paints dry. MAGIC... I'd also love to see you push the boundaries of what is possible with tufts! how many can you reasonably fit on a base? how big/small can you go? what kind of model could live up to such a base?

A good thing that add to the cracks is some red/orange/yellow drybrush over them

Lavarock also has purple and red in them.. Best results would be a drybrush in purple, then some spots red and grey.

I’d love to see your take on a snow, ice and mud base, this is how I base my army and I’m actually pretty satisfied with how they look, but I’m always looking to see if there are better/faster ways or just different ways to achieve that look

Artis Opus yeah definitely! I love the way you’re using texture paints in less traditional ways, next step is a video using texture paints to achieve an effect on the models themselves ;) e.g cracked earth one on the great unclean one to create dried cracked skin aha

One thing I've noticed using Martian Ironearth, is that the cracks don't finish appearing for at least a couple of days after application.

Someone help me out please....I think I missed something.🤔Watched the video, but I don't understand what made the paint crack. Was it the type of paint? Was it the thickness of the paint? I am in the middle of doing my first lava base, and really want to add the cracks, but I don't know how to do it. Thanks in advance. PS: I'm doing this on a budget, so I hope I don't need a special paint.

should I be leaving the red and orange blotches dry a bit before putting down the technical paint? also can cracking medium help this process?

Very cool base. I’d like to see a forest/jungle style base (thinking Endor). Also have you ever thought about doing livestreams on twitch or RU-vid? I think it could be really cool to get more insights and a more in-depth coverage about your work... an also some live interactions and suggestions could be fun...

Can you use other colors like green or blue
@tristanellis-mascoll1171
@tristanellis-mascoll1171 3 года назад
Could have used this explanation some weeks ago, where I painted some Plaque Walker running over lava field (and get massive burned !). But for the next bases I truly appreciate this video. Also you could use "Mordant Earth", which is already black in colour. On the other hand, I like to see that you can "mix" colours into those crackle paints. Maybe it will help me further down the line with some other models. Also its something to keep in mind, that you could also make some "alien" planet that crackles open and shows different bright colours (or use UV Light for effects ^^ )

Great work my man But i have somenthing to ask For mini i use model varnish from gw to protect them, on this case what should i use to prevent the texture from falling off?
@ArtisOpus
@ArtisOpus 3 года назад
Thank you bud! ^_^ Because of the paint this is much more resilient you can varnish if you prefer though.

Why not use the GW black crack paint rather that AE and mix in black paint?
@ArtisOpus

Because you won't get this type of cracks. You can absolutely use that method if you want standard crack though 😊

sorry for the dumb question but I am new to painting but why are do those cracks appear? is it because of the varnish you put under the black?
@ArtisOpus

It's a 'technical' paint that is designed to crack, it's great! Search for agrellan earth :)

@@ArtisOpus thanks a lot, very much appreciated! may i ask another question? i did get into this hobby painting gloomhaven and frosthaven miniatures and i wonder if i could apply this effect to a whole mini or would this be difficult due to the uneven surface of a mini?
@ArtisOpus
@ArtisOpus Год назад
Hey dude, sorry, replies get lost, if you ever have a question please pop it in a comment on a new video, it's less likely to get missed :) It'd work all over a mini, you just have to accept that it's a little uncontrollable, we have a video on their behavior here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mqkXvwEgwOQ.html Enjoy!

Very nice techinique easy but very effective, I’ve 2 question about this: 1. Why you choose not to use Mordant Earth (black crackle paint?) 2. Maybe an outlandish proposition...could you use this technique to paint...an Avatar of Khaine? Whenever I see these bases I can’t stop my mind to picture the magma body of the Avatar, al cracked and fiery! What do you think, is this feasable? (Maybe go for a bark/reddish brown instead of pure black?)
@ArtisOpus
@ArtisOpus 3 года назад
Thanks so much, dude! 1. Because you won't get this type of cracks. You can absolutely use that method if you want standard crack though 2. Absolutely, I don't know how exactly you'd go about it, but there's definitely something there 😊
