I wish I'd have watched this BEFORE I started trying to "shabby chic" a dresser. Luckily I have lots of sandpaper and a fierce determination to white wash my dresser. Thanks for your awesome video!

So is it possible to do a wet wash look with am oil based paint? Could you use paint thinner and wipe?

Is there anything you'd recommend doing before/after doing a wash with a brown paint? I have some wood that I've sanded down and I did put some oil/furniture finish on it but I wanted to add a hint of a darker coloring to it, and It's my first time doing something like this so it'd be very helpful to get a few tips before I try it. I'm starting with a secondary peice of the same wood as a practice run.

My idea/theme for the project is like a rustic, foresty kind of look. It's based off the idea of a lightsaber from Star Wars and because I can't make it out of metal with the materials and tools I have I have to use wood which will look just as good, just in a different style. I wrapped the handle in a leather strip but the sanded down wood color and the dark brown of the leather doesn't mix great, and I'd like to make it look better

@@Egg_Wallace I wouldn't put oil or furniture polish on it before you do a paint wash because oil and water don't mix. My biggest tip for you is to just test a small area and make sure you like it. Good luck and hope I've helped!

I a refurbishing a house where there is an old high quality teak staircase. Can you turn the red toned teak into oak color to match the new floors?
@RepurposeandUpcycle
@RepurposeandUpcycle Месяц назад
I assume the teak has been stained a red tone. Sounds like your best option is to sand the teak down a little and use a different colored stain. For a high traffic surface like stairs, whatever you do, you need to make sure the finish is durable and will last. Using a color wash over a previous stain probably isn't the best option in this situation.

Do you need to sand the wood before? Or do you need to prep the wood beforehand? Sorry this is my first project and I know nothing 😂about
@RepurposeandUpcycle

Yes it would be best to sand it before. I have all the details in my blog post with an answer to that specific question if you want to read more about it; repurposeandupcycle.com/paint-wash-furniture-mute-outdated-furniture-tones/

Hi! Are you supposed to first prime the piece you are paint washing? Thank you. 😊

No, because in this case you want the grain to show through.

The tannins in the wood will leach out making your white wash yellow! A shellac primer is needed before you paint on raw wood.

I had this worry as well, but you can’t prime the piece before a paint wash as the wood won’t absorbed the paint wash. That’s what I was told. It would be like primer wood before trying to stain it.

I did wonder about this but so far so good, no color change. I guess the best solution would be to use a tinted primer that is diluted. Time will tell.

Absolutely. Unless you water down a tinted primer and use that instead of paint.
