I just stripped an old coffee table that I've upcycled as my kitchen island top ... and found the wood was way too orange for my taste. I was thinking of white-washing it. Thanks for the demo! (I also found the same brush and was using that to apply the stripper yesterday. A 3" brush sure makes quick work of the job!)

Great information! I've been working for months on a buffet from the 40's or 50's that's made with a type of wood I've never seen before. Stripped, sanded to within an inch of it's life, treated 3x with oxcallic acid, and it's still a rust color. It's also super soft and dings practically by looking at it! To say its been a challenge is putting it mildly. I want to wash the top and have tried at least 4 colors, all of which dont seem mask the rust/orange. Maybe Harvest Brown is the trick!!

I apply poly with a roller. Scuff sand, wipe and apply a second coat. For dresser/table tops, etc. I add a coat of wax once poly is dry. Gives it another layer of moisture protection as a lot of folks don’t use coasters.

Love this taupe wash. I have a cabinet I may try that on. As far as brushes go for sealing furniture, I actually use a staining pad. It’s the size of a sponge and there are zero brush marks. It gives great coverage and I just find it’s better than other things I’ve tried. A deck staining pad works great also. 😊

@@ariadnamaloney9273 Yes, I use the staining pads to apply the poly. It honestly works so well and allows you to get around corners, into crevices, etc. without brush strokes. Have you tried the Nail Polish Remover method? You carefully pour on, spread with scraper, just wait 1 min, scrape & leave debris to dry into crispy chips you can just brush into trash. No gloppy mess. Work in sections since it works quickly. Save a pointed tip from like hair color squeeze bottle (or use the whole bottle& tip from beauty store), those work great for applying.

As we pulled off the carpet I noticed painted stair nose and thought the treads are solid wood which later after they were off noticed stair treads are particle board 😢 and can’t be refinished. My question is our floor is the color of the cabinet you are redoing here what color of base paint you would would choose after priming. Thank you so much.

Yes, you are correct. Water will always raise fibers in wood. Before applying top coat, you must de-nib the surface of the raised fibers. Use 220 or higher grit sandpaper and lightly go over the surface. Wipe clean to remove all dust and then proceed with your top coat.

We have a red oak table we made 30 years ago. It is a great big table. 45"x72". When we made it we put polyurethane on it so it has gotten orangey looking. We would like to get this white washed look without making too pink looking. We also have a problem with the polyurethane that was used on it.. We have sanded some test areas and tried some tinted oils and stains. It is not penetrating the surface evenly. Can you suggest anything that we might try to neutralize the effects of the polyurethane? Many Thanks
@cynthiaburen180
@cynthiaburen180 8 месяцев назад
Did you use a stripper and then a stripper wash? If the poly is not removed, then stain cannot penetrate the poly to get into the wood evenly. You can try a gel stain, which sits on the surface, rather than soaking into the wood.
