In this video, I show you step by step how I paint a watercolour British Robin standing in the snow. These lovely little red-breasted birds are found in the UK. I have never seen one in real life, but hope to one day. I will show you how I use mostly wet-into-wet washes to create a soft yet realistic-looking watercolour bird painting. We will also use a little bit of dry brushing and wet-onto-dry and blending techniques. This lesson is great for beginners who want to practice wet-into-wet washes, or for more experienced painters who would like to learn how to paint birds in a simple and soft style.

I love how slow and careful your painting is….. I can almost follow along without having to pause every few seconds. And so appreciate that you don’t talk talk talk talk the whole time. It makes it easier to follow the process and paint instead of having to pay attention to what you’re saying. Refreshing! What a sweet little Robin.🦋

Absolutely gorgeous. I have been trying to paint for less than a year. I love birds. I just cannot seem to get it when it comes to wetting with a clean brush. I am using strathmore watercolor cards for Xmas cards. No matter how fast or slow I put down the water it is dry where I started. The paint doesn't spread evenly. My card looks like a color page from a child's color book. I have way too much money invested to just quit. I am using Daniel smith paints. I will carry on but I have to say it is discouraging. Your painting of the sweetest robin ever is a joy to see. Thank you for sharing.

Hi Sheila, thanks for reaching out. Yes the blending process can be frustrating. You may need to have your paint a bit more watery for the wet on dry blending stages. Another thing that is probably the biggest issue is that watercolor paper is very specific and not all are made equally. I use Arches 140lb cold pressed paper for my paintings because of how well it blends and spreads the paint as it's laid down. I've never had luck with Strathmore paper unfortunately. So now when I make a hand painted Christmas card I cut a small piece of arches paper, do my painting abs then glue it in a blank cardstock card. Arches paper is a bit more expensive but I find it worth it very much. Another truck is the put clean water on first where you want to blend the soft edge, then add the wet paint to the dry area and your clean water will help blend out the edge before it drys. Keep going, this is a tricky part to master and I used to struggle with this as well ♥️
