Cobalt teal, or turquoise. Both are great for ocean water. I don't usually use more than 5 colors in my paintings but those are two great ones for any subject as a supplement.

You have amazing understanding of shadows, shapes, colors, etc. I have never watched anyone who paints as carefully yet easily as you. How much art education have you had? I think most of it comes naturally to a very smart guy! Thanks for your videos. Always informative and challenging.

Troy Dennis not learning about doing bills is very needed yet we learn about x=y. When tf would we ever use that in our life. If people want to become artists they could take a art class and learn this but art classes just do dumb sketches they teach you it’s not useful. This is.
Lizzy they teach you basic skills. They teach you algebra because it’s the basis of calculating a budget. They teach you geometry as it’s the basis for construction. This isn’t difficult to understand. This could be offered as an advanced art class sure but certainly not for everyone.

I don't know why people think of Bob Ross when you do your work. The difference is night and day. Your knowledge of light, water, reflection, and color balance, along with your knowledge of perspective is awesome.

Joe, Just want to let you know I watch you have Clayton ,Alabama and I have been painting many years and watch many videos . I have never watch an artist take up as much time talking and explaining the way you do. You have taught me more for the past 6 months than I was taught all my life. Thank you for being so patient and caring about others. I'm 72 years old and live alone. My art is y life. Thanks much, Mama Pat
Dude, thank you so much. Of course they break down to math, just like nature always does. My river has been in chaos and this will help organize it a bit.
Joe, this water is so realistic, makes me want to jump right in! Thank you for your scientific outlook and explanation of how nature dictates art. I adore your talent and willingness to teach others. I am a self-taught painter and I totally appreciate everyone's advice...the more I find the more confident I get. Keep um comin'
I absolutely loved how this artist gives the learner examples of other things in the world (magnets) to teach how or why shapes (waves) are made. That helped immensely !
This video is posted in 2015, years backs. Yet I find that most of the comments are only weeks old. Are people suddenly discovering the joys of painting ? Awesome demo, by the way.
This is the kind of painting I've been wanting to do for, like, my entire life. I finally feel that I have a shot at turning out some really good works. Thanks for sharing your skill and knowledge!
"Lay em' down together, don't think too hard about it." That's precisely the type of coaching I have needed over the years, whether it's a portrait, or a Sci-fi/Fantasy painting---I have struggled too hard THINKING about HOW, or WHAT to do in certain situations. When I simply take a deep breath--- close my eyes for a few moments, and just allow the ta- lent and creativity take over, things go MUCH smoother. Thanks for the reminder.
Well hello there my new favorite art teacher, where have you been all my life?? Absolutely gorgeous piece, and you are so incredible at explaining and showing what you're doing. I think I'm gonna make leaps and bounds in my art learning from you.
So refreshing for someone to break it down in layman's terms and provide an example to prove the point. Thank you, you're a wonderful teacher (and gifted artist).
The energy you exude as I've watched most of these videos is amazing. I'm so taken aback with the patience you have with the painting and the explanation. Thanks so much, you are amazing (Feb. 22/16).
I learned so much from this tutorial! I love the perspective lines. Never thought of doing that. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and talent.
Love that you use a grid for perspective. It is a tool I use all the time. We forget it at our peril - nothing looks less real to our eye if we forget to use a simple distance perspective. A great demo - Thanks!
im 49, been dabling in paint for ever. never dared water much because its so damn daunting to. you are the first to explain it in a understandable way. thank you so much. just subscribed
You are the most talented artist I have ever heard about. You observing the nature with four eyes not two. You put so big attention even for extremely small details. Many grand artist could not be even a slave to your painting. I do admire to you with enormous respect...
Way to over-exaggerate. Just because you're completely fucking clueless and have never seen any remotely good painters, doesn't mean this guy is the best. He's average at best.
BeyerT1 his skills are definitely not average, very few painters truly understand the anatomy of things they paint like he does. Plus he’s sharing generously his knowledge so others can understand how to construct. Thank you Joe
I kept longing for a close up of your canvas while painting on it, especially those first dark swoopy shapes in the water. Also would love a prolonged look at the finished piece.
I have never seen someone explain the process and why certain things are at certain places so well when painting water. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge and skills!

Hola amigo soy de colombia , me gusta mucho su trabajo, puedo ver también atreves de su modo de pintar, su calides y profundidad personal, lo felicito y gracias por que usted, motiva muchas personas a pintar y a ser mas felices.
I was mezmorized to see your painting gradually come alive with movement. I could almost hear the waves lapping. I would love yo emulate your talent. I enjoy trying.
We have completely different styles, but I always find something useful to try in my own way when I watch your videos. Thank you for the valuable information! :)
I just wanted to thank you for making these videos. I've always preferred working with charcoal and pastels but was asked to paint a mural by a previous client of mine. I said sure, then immediately panicked. I went online, found you, and was able to make a piece I am very proud of. Thank you so much for being such a great teacher and for sharing your gift with us. I'm forever grateful.
muraljoe! Damn I love to geek out on your videos. I love that you don't use reference, and instead, you use a large arsenal of rules and techniques. Great work man! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you 🙏 for simplifying something so complex and abstract as water. I normally have been painting portraits ,but this has inspired me to paint 🎨 water 🌊
I love the impetuous way he paints. He’s like caught in the middle of a creative burst (and bet he was in it). His words are simply, clear, spontaneous and have sense. He doesn’t waste time. He’s in some ways frenzy and I always loved this dynamicity. I would fall in love with someone that alive!
The way you explain things, i feel that you have such an instinct driven art form, its incredible. You are so natural with your painting, and you really think about everything in a way i havent seen in many other artists. You have Great talent... its awe-inspiring
I want to thank you so much for always making these videos. They have helped me tremendously in my own work. There is nothing more frustrating for me as an artist when I can't properly translate my thoughts onto canvas. With your tutorials I am able to finally see my thoughts and ideas form in my paintings. You are a wonderful and gifted artist.
I'm so thankful that your vids started popping up in my feed. Your work is truly inspiring. I thought you were formally trained until I looked up your page. No schooling at all? Amazing how much potential we have that we don't always take advantage of. Thank you so much...
