/ adrianhomersham Loose expressive semi-abstract watercolour seascape demonstration video by Adrian Homersham.
Details of brushes and equipment used in this demonstration are detailed below:
Hake Brush
This is a goat haired brush that has been used for centuries in both China and Japan. It is very versatile and can be used to apply large washes of pigment and to create loose textured areas; a great for loose wet into wet watercolours. The ones I use are Pro Arte Ron Ranson branded brushes. I find these shed hairs far less than cheaper alternatives. It’s useful to have these in a range of sizes and they can be purchased as a set of 4, please see link below:

Goat Haired Calligraphy Brushes
These are again oriental brushes used in traditional Chinese ink and watercolour artwork. They are widely available from a variety of sources and are relatively inexpensive. I have a large collection of these however the brushes I use most were purchased from Jackson’s Art. I find these well made, capable of creating a reasonable point and don’t shed hairs. I use the Large and Medium sizes of this brush. Please see link below:

Paint
I use a variety of paint brands including Daniel Smith and Windsor & Newton in both the Cotman and Artist’s range. The Cotman colours are very economic to purchase and are used by both students and professional artists including Sophie Knight RWS. Colours used Cotman Ultramarine, Burnt Sienna, Alizarin Crimson and Raw Sienna.

Paper Fabriano Artistico
The paper used for this demonstration was Fabriano Artistico EW 140lb NOT. This is a 100% cotton rag paper with a beautiful bright white surface that aids the creation of vibrant translucent watercolours.

Palette
Manufactured by Stewart these are very light and strong. The large open mixing area encourages loose expressive colour mixing.

Lovely! Like your use of sand with watercolor. I've used sand in acrylic before to create texture, but hadn't thought of using with watercolor. Very nice.

Thank you, I got the idea for adding sand to watercolour when I dropped my palette on the beach. It helps to add texture as pigment gathers around the graons of sand and creates textured marks even if the sand falls away later.

Superb work that magnifies the watercolor near the abstraction. I am a fervent admirer. For me it really represents what you can get with talent and good ingredients. Thank you so much. Cordially.

Such beautiful gentle technique producing a wonderful painting. Can I ask what make, type and size of brush you are using to add fine detail and the cliffs in the background? It has such a fine point! Thanks Lynne

Hi Lynne thank you for watching and for your kind comments. The brush I use is from Jacksons Art in the UK it is called Studio Essentials : Chinese Painting : Chinese Goat Brush : Medium The one used in the video is quite old and has lost a few hairs which is why it creates such a fine point.

Hi Matilda A key element in painting this way is to plan your design clearly before you begin. Then when you are applying the watercolour you can be confident where to apply your darks and where to leave quiet passages for the eye to rest. Don't worry if the watercolour runs or moves in ways you don't expect, try to use these happy accidents within the painting. Thanks for viewing

I’m not familiar with gum Arabic, how are you using it? I’m in love with your paintings.
@adrianhomersham8544
@adrianhomersham8544 4 года назад
Hi Jeannette, thank you for the positive feedback. Gum Arabic is one of the main ingredients of watercolour and can be bought separately from art suppliers in bottles. It has a consistency similar to runny honey and could be used along with pigment and a little corn starch to make watercolour paint. I use it here to mix with a little beach sand and a little watercolour paint. This makes a textured gummy paste that can be added to the paper with either a brush or palette knife. Even if some of the sand falls away later it will leave a textured mark on the paper where the pigment has collected, ideal for beach paintings.
@jeannettecomer8739
@jeannettecomer8739 4 года назад
Adrian Homersham Ok that explains it. I just couldn’t understand how you were using it since I only know gum Arabic like something you use to protect your whites. I’m going to try your methods. Your methods of loose painting is helping me so much. I only recently got back into watercolor and discovered you. I’m painting again!!! Thank you!

I love your semi-abstract way of painting. One question. The video lasts about 30 minutes. How long does it take to you to complete a painting, including drying time ? Thanks.
@adrianhomersham8544
@adrianhomersham8544 4 года назад
Hi Yves thanks for the positive feedback. most of my paintings take 20 to 30 minutes to complete. I paint on Fabriano Artistico 140lb which has a relatively quick drying cycle even with very wet washes. I occasionally use a hairdryer to speed the drying process up between washes.
