I'm a welder. On my day off. Watching you weld. Good instructions. Been welding since 1993. I never look at it as work. It's fun and they pay me. The work is driving site to site and dragging my gear to the area to weld. Worthwhile video.

Great video overall. I would have liked to see more closeups of the puddle/keyhole so I could see your rod tip movements. I would have especially liked to have seen how you put the side by side caps in without trapping slag or not tying in. You did a fine job otherwise. Hanks for taking the time to make this video.

I have no idea what you are talking about, but I had to weld 3 to 4 inch gaps on the foundation for the head saw for a double cut saw mill turning over a million board feet a day. It took me 8 hours to weld in those gaps. My welds never broke wether they were upside down, vertical, horizontal or at angles. No one I worked with would have understood these terms. I welded sheets for sawdust, trusses for the floors, bearings, angle iron paddles, safety guards and all the tracks and beams for the floors and supports. I have loads of slag burns and even set my crotch on fire once making a truss. I think it is great somebody is explaining what’s going on. In those days you just did it. If you couldn’t do it you didn’t weld.

I noticed that you keep stop/starting at the same position with each pass. Shouldn't you stagger your stop/starts to avoid any chance of a weak point or leak? After I asked the question 3/4 the way through the video, you mentioned staggering every time you stop/started!

The way you explained the welding procedure is the way it's done. That be the way I was taught in trade school. And while testing you could only use a hand wire brush and a chipping hammer. No grinder with a wire wheel. X-ray qualified on 1 1/2 inch with a 1/2" hole pipe tig carbon steel test. Purged stainless pipe high pressure vessels building a company in Niles Michigan I'll just say they build a lot of hot water heaters. I worked in there specialty tank division.

You should get in the habit of unplugging your grinder when your changing wheels. It'd a good thing to pass to your students as well. I've watched a guy taking off a sanding disk with gloves on, it was a dead man switch that was missing the little slide that requires you to move before pressing the switch down. As he was trying to remove the disk he hit the switch on accident and it grabbed his glove and broke 3 of his fingers as if they were pencils. Be safe man!

The trick I learned (to avoid safety and to save time) I put my finger under the trigger so it can't depress. Obviously that only works on some grinders though

I used to be a welders helper in Houston. I wish I would of stuck it out.and became a welder. If I remember we used a 6011 rod a lot, is that a common type rod? It's been about 20 yrs. Ago, so I might be wrong
@smitaaay
@smitaaay 2 года назад
If I remember correctly, 6011 is really good for blowing through crappy metal. It also puts off an enormous number of sparks. Like that stuff will light you up. So if you remember it being that way and the guys you were helping were welding on some old metal, it might have been 6011. I haven't welded at work in several years. I know I still see 6011 rod on the shelves, but I think all the guys have gone to using 6010 simply because it doesn't rain on you as much and I think the welds are similar. I think they'll lay their root pass with 6010 and then cover it up with 7018 and it looks really good. (There's a good chance I'm completely out to lunch on that stuff, since I haven't done it in years, but I think that's what I remember. haha)

When I went to welding school we did vertical up for our certs for structural. When I worked for a boiler service company we did the 2" 6g test vertical up. Question is why do the pipeline guys all run downhill in the field?
@liamjenkins82
@liamjenkins82 2 года назад
I'm no expert but I've always assumed pipe lines are higher volume lower pressure. Thats why they use special rods for down hill welding! Maybe anyway
@Then.72

They shouldn't be doing that because I doubt the procedure was that way
@bsquadrider

@Then.72
@Then.72 2 года назад
@@bsquadrider ASME9 6G covers the welders for the pipe sizes they have tested on and they can also weld in any position. You are watched while you take the test to make sure you don't cheat by turning the pipe etc and welding vertical creates more penetration than welding downhill hence why it's done that way also the weld procedure requires it to be done this way.

Some people are naturals been there 6 months doing 6G pipe overhead wields. I'm barely passing 2 G. Like I had Parkinson with the rod.Year program. We didn't get to Tig til ,2 months left. Then the Tig. Now you got to three things. I could never fluctuate the pedal right So I'd mash it control the bead with speed. I'd run out of rod or get to end of the world pull the touch forget to take my foot off the mashed peddle. Zap the shit out of my hands. Wish I had more time to use it nice water cooled Miller unit.

I've seen pipe welders weld pipe and they don't have as many stops and starts as you do and they don't reposition themselves everytime they blink their eyes.You would not make a good pipeline welder.You stop and restart to many times.Id like to see you mig weld pipe,8",sch 80 or tig weld pipe,sch 80 or 100 root pass all the way out to cap,stringers only with tig.The bottom line is,too many stops and starts just to reposition yourself, there's no reason for that,like I said, there's pipe welders out there that only stop for one thing,to get a new rod but not to get into another position each time they blink.Thats pretty bad.ILLgive you a thumbs up on the root pass,1/8th-3/32nd fantastic idea,excellent,my hats off to you but the rest of it,no.
