Wow, what an undertaking! Your explanation of the various route possibilities was fascinating. The amount of planning involved to deal with the weather patterns & hope they remain "as usual" & also having to worry about avoiding known pirate areas. Then there is the boat preparation ~ should we expect a detailed video on that? Hearing of all the planning & preparation needed, I think I would just stay around the Anambas Island area. I think you're very brave to attempt this trip & my admiration for you has increased many times over.
Brave or daft? I'm not sure! Seriously, though, we've been at this cruising malarkey for 12 years, and have already sailed east through the Red Sea, Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean. The trick is not to look at the top of the mountain, but just take each stage as it comes. Mind you, I could easily spend the next few years going back and forth to the Anambas! 👌😊👍 Liz
Wow how casual you explain this trip. so easy ! You have obviously done many offshore miles to be so confident in a trip like this. Sailing west around the world is all about down wind easy trade winds.... You sailing east is up hill, with HUGE weather systems that roll through the high latitudes, 1000's of miles across, those huge weather systems rolling over you with 50 or 60 knots of wind and 30 to 40 foot waves for days and nights before they pass. A typhoon is tiny - the destructive may be higher but the winds circle of 50 or 60 knots is only 300 or 400 miles across, easy to get out of its path or find a safe anchorage. We have been sailing since 2004 , but all our sailing has been trade wind sailing in the tropics, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Australia, new Caledonia , Solomon Island, Melanesian, Fiji, Vanuatu. Mostly the south Pacific. We have been in the Philippines now for 5 years , because 7000 island (nearly all different flora & fauna and Peoples, with different attitudes, There are 134 ethnic groups in the Philippines, and there are 135 recognized local languages in the Philippines ) Because of this English has become the 2nd language for all. Its nice to be able to have deep meaningful conversations because no language barrier, rather than just smiling and watching the local people because of a communication barrier. The people here are so amiable and friend. I would take the west side of palawan Island and defiantly spend some time in El Nido and Coron on your way, Both have amassing scenery. Good luck to you on an epic journey, you are braver than me ! PS the very southern part of palawan over the years has had 1 or 2 instances of pirate boarding, mostly opportunistic Goods smugglers between Malaysia & Philippines , not the hard core Muslim terrorist found in the S.E. philippine Sulu sea. Buy a 100 ft length of blue colored polypropylene rope "cheap & it floats" if a following boat starts to look like a problem, trail the rope out you stern and as the other boat approaches you - you will naturally turn away and they will keep crossing your stern, and get their propeller entangled in the rope. 99.9% chance you won't need it , but still $50 cheap insurance !

Thank you for sharing your planning preparations. Very informative. Yours is easily (IMHO) the most informative and entertaining blog. Your sharing of your knowledge is so impressive. I especially like your risk assessment on every step. I started watching the sailing blogs, yours especially, initially for entertainment purposes but recently it has occurred to me that maybe this is something that I would like to do. Last night my wife and I actually talked about what we would need to do if we in fact decided to become blue water sailors. We figured we would need about four to five years planning and preparation. I am 61 and my wife is 58. We live in Hawaii (Hilo), kids are all grown up and gone. We have no mortgage and we would rent our home while we would be gone. We are thinking about joining the local sailing club as novices and slowly grow into this possibility. We welcome any suggestions and comments. Fair Winds and following seas to all three of you.
Sounds to me like you've pretty much nailed it. Get some lessons under your belts (you can learn a lot by going on a week's course living on a boat)... Try sailing holidays to know if it's the life for you (a flotilla holiday requires no qualifications)... Good luck! 👍👌
That was an excellent mission briefing for a trip that could be quite overwhelming in planning terms. I like the way you identified the starting gates, ran through the options before deciding on the path to take. Breaking the mission down into subsidiary objectives is a sound planning tool and prevents going ga ga over the otherwise infinite number of variables and what ifs. We are glad to see you coming to the Pacific Northwest. We are sure you will find it absolutely breathtaking. We have been cruising between Seattle and Alaska for the last 25 years. You will find you can cruise is busy areas or incredibly remote areas. We spent last summer in Haida Gwaii, a group of 150 islands, covering 4,000 square miles, 70 miles off the northern British Columbia coast. In 7 weeks of cruising we saw 4 other cruising boats. A sailing yacht I crewed on in the 80s took a route of Bali to Papua to Palau to Tokyo to PNW before I joined them. Sparked my imagination and admiration. Going the wrong way around definitely keeps you off the beaten path. Eager to follow your journey.

Good choice on passing on the south Philippines -- still a dangerous spot. Option 3 looks great! You will love the friendly people of the Philippines! ...it's still safe on the southern islands, like Negros Occidental, Panay & Coron
Yes, we have a feeling we're going to adore the Philippines - every single person we have met from that country has been warm and friendly. At the moment we haven't got much time there, but I could see us staying for a whole season... 👍 Liz
Japan is a gem for travellers. Safe, clean, efficient, great food and friendly people! Lots to see and do..Yokohama is close to Tokyo and other great day trips. Tell the captain to stock up on the most excelent Japanese whiskey that's come into it's own the last few years!
Hi Liz and Jamie. I wouldn't write off Hong Kong as a destination. We had our yacht delivered to Hong Kong via the South China Sea in May and enjoyed some spectacular sailing around the island. We sailed the boat back ourselves a year later along the same route later, again in May. Gentle 15 knots SW monsoon was just setting in both times which made for a pleasant but warm sail North and a slow 100nm tacks going south. The trip took 10 days north and 15 days south. Both trips were straight down the middle of the South China Sea and we had no problems with fishing nets as they were much closer to the Vietnam coast. We did have a lot of commercial shipping traffic as this is the major sea-lane between HK and Singapore. We would count over 100 ships a day and that was before AIS. As we had work commitments we sailed past some very good cruising grounds and in a different (non working life) would have sailed up the Borneo coast and into Brunei and Manila etc. We avoided considering any passage through the Philippines due to concerns around piracy etc. Although Hong Kong is a sideways sail from Manila, it is truly magical to sail into one of the greatest harbours in the world and caters for boaties very well. Departure from Manila or Hong Kong to southern Japan is a much of a muchness in both distances and timing - factoring where to shelter for the Typhoon season is a biggie.
We really want to see Borneo and the Philippines, so it's not on the tight schedule at the moment...but things might change! Thanks very much for that valuable information. Being a Londoner, I have a soft spot for big cities, so sailing into HK would be fantastic. The downside is that I used to fly there every month for about six years when I worked for a Chinese company, so it conjures up images of work for me. Haha! Liz

I thought that I had our RTW trip mapped out from Oz, but I am now looking at the PNW and THEN head west. Need to be careful with the storms up there, as the Clipper guys found out - the hard way. Hi Liz and Jamie. I literally just finished reading Harry Heckel's book "Around the World in 80 years". He twice circumnavigated, the last time aged 89, in a 32 ft Dreadnought. He left Japan early June 2002, never found any consistent westerlies and nine times encountered winds of 30 knots or more. He even considered returning to Japan at one point. He had a terrible time of it after being damaged in a knockdown and ended up in Hawaii (not part of his original plan) after 142 days at sea. Quite a read.

Oh yes, oceans have good and bad times to cross, so we try to minimise the risk by choosing the predicted most benign (less malign?) months in which to set off. Great to read you have a five year plan, plenty of time to research and practice before you set off on the great adventure! 👌⛵ Liz

A bit of history to add to your challenging trip : During sixteenth century Pacific ocean or "the Spanish lake" as known by anyone at that time was full of expeditions and many men and ships were lost in discovering the route to return to America. Finally Andrés de Urdaneta and Miguel de Legazpi in 1564 found the way to return. Philippines, Taiwan, Japan, and the Kuro Sivo current took the boat to Acapulco. 200 men leaving and just 18 arriving; only two of them strong enough to disembark. Many thanks for sharing your way...
Coming late to the video, just to mention Taiwan is an awesome Island to stop off if needed, also if possible look into Green Island off the East coast of Taiwan, small Island but has one of only three hot salt water springs in the world. Spent a week diving there and would go back again in a heartbeat :) (Not sure on anchorages though but there are some small fishing ports around the circumference of the Island)
Ruddy good stuff, wot! You want to lay in a good supply of whiskey and cigars, a spare monocle, and a spare wooden leg for a journey like that. A parrot is an excellent travelling companion, you can pretend it's not yours when you meet the harbourmaster, and they drink very little whiskey, unlike a cat. Enjoy the bally old journey, wot! The last time in Alaska in June it was 90 F!!! The animals all hide from the heat is the problem. Expect the unpredictable and enjoy the beautiful views and large fish!!! Hope to meet you up north in our RV.

Thank you for changing your plans to sail into the southern Philippines! West Palawan, around to Puerto Princessa is a safe route! Then on to the Central, and Northern parts! You get a 28 day visa on arrival, but can extend it every month for another 28 days! After that, you can get a 3 month visa!

LONGER! Attractions: Puerto Princessa; The longest underground river; just north of PP is Coron, they have a jellyfish lake, with stingless jellyfish! Bohol, Inland has the Chocolate Hills, The worlds larges Man-Made Bamboo forest, a Tarsier Sanctuary, Baclayon Church, the second oldest stone building in the Philippines, just off Bohol, you have Panglao Is., 2fsw off the beach, the drops off to 100fsw, The site of the first formal Treaty between the Spanish, and the Philippino people! Cebu has Magellan's cross, nearby Mactan Is. has a monument on the site where Magellan was killed! Luzon in the central Highlands, (a 2-day trip at least) you have The rice terraces of Banaue, that are 2,000 years old! 7,108 islands need lots of time!
As far as bucket list items, I think exploring Japan from your own Yacht might be pretty un-beatable. Right up there with exploring the Ao Phang Nga National Park in same said yacht. Or Baranof Warm Springs, AK maybe? So excited for you guys!

Yeah, we still have a bit of work to do when it comes to secure stowing below and above decks. The waves can rip items off the deck and anything flying around down below can kill you. All lockers are secured with bolts, but not quite everything yet... Cheers! Liz
Sailing followtheboat and maybe some diapers, first time I surfed down a 20’ wave was in a 51 ton Fishing boat off of Kodiak Island haha! Bu the time you reach Alaska, the volume will be turned way down and madam esper will be sailing in any conditions without worry.
Glad you decided to stay clear of Philippines South and the security concerns there.......if you do decided to come to Hong Kong Alison and I would love you take you two out for a meal.

Philippines is gorgeous - lots of great diving & anchorages - most of the big typhoons are i the second part of the year - DON'T leave it till July / August - huge storms come in every few days from pacific & you will see a lot of mangroves while you wait them out! - better be there in first half of the year same for Taiwan & Japan. ( next destinations for Typhoons after PH!) Another option would be Indonesia & Borneo > HK > Philippines > Taiwan > Korea > Japan

Thanks for your video. I recommend going to Hiroshima and the Japan Seto Naikai (Inland Sea). Excellent cruising area, virtually no one cruises there and you are close to big cities. I would not stay in Yokohama or Tokyo too long, busy area and expensive.
I've been based on Samal Island in the Philippines since 2007. Definitely an area you want to avoid unless you are willing to shoot back. There are many places further north like Leyte that should not be missed but I wouldn't recommend traveling further south at this time. My main reason for commenting is that there is an uncharted low hanging high power wire between Bucas Grande to Middle Bucas. It is located at approximately 09 41.2 N 125 58.8 E in the channel and about 25 feet above the water at it's lowest point.

Sailing followtheboat .i can say i am a veteran to this route ,this year had a power tugboat style to deliver from japan to vancouver ,but corona took it away.... i still try to reach 10 such passages.but at the moment the world standstills...to sad...,best passage was 40 ton 60ft steel yacht with a rotating free standing carbon mast ,what a easy sailing was that,and at this weight size what a smooth ride in big seas.the sad part was seen the japanese whalers,the same ones that are in Antartica in Winter season,..

Well done....very interesting explaination in one go...talking about piracy in Malacca Straits..most a syndicated piracy for bulk tanker..or goods carrying vessels...nothing they can gain for a sailboats piracy....and none I heard they take victims for ransoms...so..nothing to worry as long you close within Malaysia territory.

Great job explaining the timetable around your plans and the evolution of the various iterations with the reasoning behind your choices. On a side note, that blouse is absolutely fabulous. It's quite fetching on you Liz. Finally, I'm dying to learn how the shed is coming along. You tease us with just a quick sped-up montage in this video. I want to know all about the details around its construction and how the fiberglass top was laid-up and constructed, as well as how the final supports will be built and mounted. Are you going to go with hard dodger windows or Isinglass? Don't keep all of us gearheads hanging forever on those details.

So excited that your coming to the pacific northwest. You must see alaska ankorage and the keni penisula then take the inside passage down to vancouver and victoria. The best time for alaska is june and july. I RV'd there two summers ago and by mid aug the weather is wet and cold and sept is starting to freeze. It's not Anambus but is jaw droppingly beautiful with the white glacier topped mountains and deep blue water. Can't wait to watch your journey. fair winds Steve H.
Yes, it sounds fantastic - particularly the natural surroundings and animals. The problem is it is unlikely we will get there till very late summer, by which time we'll have to scoot south. Or not! Who knows? We'd love to see the area. 👍 Liz
Sailing followtheboat I've been watching the weather in South East Alaska coastal areas and it is not much colder than Vancouver. Plus minus 7c but that is far from the 30c your accustomed too.
Great look into your planning! If you don't have them, highly recommend immersion suits for that far north. Also, avoid southern Philippines for security purposes. Challenging route but y'all can do it right!
Sea Travel Yes, survival suits are on the list. We'll be posting a general video about prepping for the passage soon, and some specific 'shorts' on things like safety at a later date. Hi dear. I think the stop-over in Borneo it is a very good idea. I was there for the first time long ago and what the local tribals said to me i was the first italian who they met (obiviously after the english and japanis). If you are planning to go first to Kuching, the costal parts not far from there is interesting, specially the untouched beaches and the caves. Locals are always wonderful and helpful. Kuching itself is not much interesting. Moving a bit up to Miri it is best to start a river jungle trip with the local transport boats (craaazy!) till at least Kapit. I believe the port of Miri it is not really the best place you ever been ( always very crowded, noisy, dirty and bla bla bla). Anyway go up Rajan river is a stunning adventure and you can stop everywhere you feel like as guest of the Tuan rumah on their long houses. .You can meet different tribes at short distance as Iban, Kayan, Lahannan, Punan etc. Just bring some presents and medicines in change of their ospitality. But first you have to ask permission to the Tuan Rumah. kisses el venesian

Its great telling us that not only is it a long way but it will be a long time. Actually seeing the early planning I didn't really understand how long you stay in one place. 1 year in Japan sounds rather boring after seeing how lovely and so much exploring there is on the south asian seas. Lots of luck and I'll watch you the whole way and be on the dock when you get to Victoria or vancity. I live in surrey bc right now.

What software was it? We're about to create our blog website for our forthcoming circumnavigation (with our cat too), and have been looking for some good interactive map options...

@@followtheboat Yes, I am from Finland, Northern Europe. Covid-19 with wave II appears to heat up now, just like many epidemologist estimated 6 months ago it is following same timeline spanish flu did 1918. Some cities are closing fully like Madrid on Spain but situation varies and differs much more compared for situation half year ago. In my country more restriction is coming also, restaurants for instance closed now partly. Nice Vlog, watching your vlogs. Oyster is actually one monohull brand I really like together with Discovery as far as UK made boats are subject. Swan and Baltic Yachts are made in Finland but not often seen by cruisers. Stay at some level well provisioned if possible, there might be another "little mad" times coming before vaccine becomes available for all for the rest of this year.

Looking forward to this. I too would like someday to visit Japan but not sure what is available to cruisers. They do have a bit of a "we're better than you attitude" so it will be interesting to see how your received. US service men that have gone there that we know loved it, and Korea as well. West coast of Taiwan might be a great stop too. Just make sure you give a wide berth to all the plastic trash in the middle of the Pacific ocean. Would not be fun to go thru that, in fact it would be pretty dangerous with prop and thru hull fouling. A real shame that is. Better have some cold weather clothing as your going to be in for some cold weather.
I'll be amazed if things don't change! We're looking at a small window before we leave western Malaysia, and if we don't get everything we want done in time, we will be delayed by a year at least. And that's just the start! It's going to be interesting to see... Cheers! 👍 Liz
Might be worth it to grab a Geiger counter since you'll be traveling in the water past Fukushima. At least to offer first hand readings offshore that are not "adjusted" but officials. Also if your gonna eat from the sea, might be worth it to check for peace of mind. Areas in Alaska are starved for DVD's and Books and onshore offer Freecycle sheds for travelers. But it's offer 1, take 1 rules. Most ports up there would be fairly conservative and you can get Millie the kittie checked in by vet that travels to the boat. In the lower 48 we don't have traveling Veterinarians and more strict officials. This is a hell of a taking. The north coast route is dangerous but you'd have the winds with you. Your talking 30-60' waves and rouge waves that are twice the height. Not to mention ice even in July/August.
Yes, it's quite an undertaking, but others in similar sized yachts have done it, so we think we'll be able to as well. We will be very careful to get daily weather reports as we cross the Pacific. There is also the threat of calms too if we stray into the Pacific high which runs across... Any idea where we buy a Geiger counter from? 👍 Liz
Cant believe you are doing this. Sounds v risky. You sure will have a serious adventure for sure. You didnt mention icebergs? Isnt that an added risk also. Will you have additional crew for the ocean crossing to help with the night watch etc. Im going to follow every second of it for sure. You two are an inspiration. What i like about this video is how you lay it out for youre subs as most have no clue at all as to what goes into planning a voyage. Most channels do not bother with such details. That said zangaro just goes with blown out sails giant holes in them 30 year old rigging and no charts, Doodles just steps on a charter boat and starts a 8 month trip to thailand from canada. .grandpa pretty much did a trip with no boat at all. So its definately a interesting time in youtube sailing . I like them all. For sure youre cruising plans are far more intimidating than the others i mention who are just doing the coconut run. However time will tell if planning trips like say ruby rose ,delos and lavagabond and having a well equiped boat is really the only way to do youtube successfully. I am like you and plan the shit out of it. That probobly comes with age.

Great work.. too excited now lol... but I have to wait till you're ready I guess, Just a side note on the typhoons that hit the Philippines most are in the south so central Luzon can be quite safe.

I think the big decision is going to be the crossing all the rest are pretty short hops by comparison. I personally found the Aleutian Island to be very beautiful, all be it in a decidedly non tropical way and problematical in it's own way. On the other hand going a more southerly route can be like going through a desert. A lot of mile rolling water instead of dunes. No matter, sure sounds like a great trip. The journey makes the destination all the sweeter.
At this stage, just getting from western Malaysia to the hopping off point from Japan is without doubt the most complicated part of our planning. The Pacific crossing will be dictated by conditions at the time, so we won't make any final decisions on that until we've cleared Japan and its typhoon belt. Yes, very interested in the Aleutians. Do you have any information on formalities? I'm wondering if they'll let us anchor before we get to Unalaska? Cheers! 👍 Liz
Adak, I think, would be an even more likely place than Unalaska (Ounalashka/ This Beautiful Land. Aleut name for the island) not even sure if you could clear there. I was on a research vessel coming from the US. Although we passed through Canadian waters we never made port and besides clearing from Can & US back then wasn't an issue. BTW you'll love The Juan De Fuca straits. Really you should try the whole archipelago down the Alaskan panhandle. The currents are a challenge for sailboats though.
Salish seas, BC, Canada protected water, thanks to Vancouver island and a thousand anchorages. Summers are warm and the fishing is divine..if you like salmon, crabs, mussels ect. ect. Hope you have a heater for the boat, you'll need it in Alaska. Vancouver, loads of anchorages and marina, city center.
Will be intrested to see the journey have heard about pirates around the Philippines apart from avoiding what kind of precautions are you going to take.

Palawan is defently not safe. Abu Sayaf kidnapped people there several times. They even kidnapped people in Malaysia and Cebu. My advise. ..avoid south and Central Philippines and sail straight for northern part of Luzon such as Puerto Galera (Mindoro) or further north. I know what i am talking about. My wife is filipina and ive been there numerous times since the mid 90es When that is being said i wish you happy trip. May the winds be gentle to you☺
Thanks for that. Have you been there recently? Those crimes you mention all happened a few years ago. We are in touch with people there right now who say Palawan is safe again. From what I've been told, it is the east Sulu Sea and Mind another which we should avoid...
Why not cruise a bit more Northward and take in the Allutian chain of islands and then skirt the Alaskan coast and then the Inside passage to Victoria?
