Interesting analysis of "The Algorithm". So sad that Google cares nothing about the content providers their revenue depends on. I've definitely noticed that I get many fewer notices that the channels I subscribe to have made new videos. On the other hand, I get notified that channels have published "new" videos that I have already watched. Pretty sure you are right, the people at Google have very little idea what their software actually does.
I think it's your view numbers that are making your revenue so low. You need 50K views plus to make a profit, IMO. Study your most popular videos. Although some may like all the talking, most people don't have that kind of attention span. People want to see progression. Rapid change. Quick results. I wish you the best. Some youtubers have gone to Patreon only videos. They use RU-vid shorts to "advertise" their content, but its patrons that brings in a more regular income. Also many are now using buy me a coffee? Just my 2 cents, I'm not a professional.

since i lived in houses, I have had one thoughtless thug neighbour after another. Every time I have to sell and move, the legal fee's, stamp duty and legal costs add up to between 30 to 50 thousand dollars. Then there's the removalist. Then all those engines from wiper snippers, mowers, blowers, trimers, the car engine, I'm only half way through this list. I tried pulling the anchor up last night when the new neighbours rode quad bikes till midnight. You just can't up and go in a house and maintenance is greater if you have gardens etc. My 38 ft boat cost me less and is way more fun and peaceful. Pure and simple.
We use DaVinci resolve. We started with the free version and it was really good. We now use the paided version and its even better, start off with the free one and learn it, it can do so much you may not need the paid one at all.
I’ve been subscribed ever since I became aware of people sailing our oceans, and your approach is greatly appreciated and inspiring. But I have yet to become a patron and have only purchased a few items from other sailing channels, such as a t- shirt. I’m still considering to try some sailing because of your approach to life.
What are your thoughts on using that DJI Pocket cam? Didn’t really notice the wrinkle in the main, but did notice the shadow of a Pocket 3. I just got this camera but have not filmed out on the water yet. The footage from this episode was beautiful, so im guessing you like it?
Hi Edward. The footage is a mix from the GH5, Action 4 and Pocket 3. The Pocket 3 is great for the wide shots and also talking to camera, it's a neat bit of kit, and the 32bit float audio means you'll never clip. I went through a period of shooting in 'normal', like in this episode, but I prefer shooting in log so in a few episodes I switch back. What the pocket 3 in normal mode is good for is shooting the face in a shadow with a bright background. It uses some kind of HDR magic to not blow out highlights while retaining the correct exposure on the face. I really like the Pocket 3 and use it every day.
that was a great sail; question: now I know i haven't watched from the very begininig but have you ever sailed to Australia and/or the South Pacific islands? if not, why?
Hi Jerome. We will discuss this in more detail some time in the future but the reality is it's too far away from the UK. I will be having to spend more time flying back there.
Nice fold in your main... 😮 When we were buying our boat, we thought we wanted in-mast but the boat we purchased was slab reefed. As it turns out we are very happy with our slab reefed main and are now very glad we did _not_ get in-mast reefing. And now you have demonstrated yet another advantage - our halyard is up and down on every sail and therefore is always tensioned correctly. No slipping halyards for us... 😄 It looked like a nice sail, if a bit lumpy and the views were wonderful.
To be honest, now that we've had in-mast all these years I almost wouldn't have it any other way. Simple to deploy, can furl away when off-wind, it's a pretty stress-free system for liveaboards.
No, is that a thing? Wouldn't the sail be constantly backing if sheeted in? We tend to only use our staysail when going into wind but I'm happy to hear other ideas!
We do, but it was decommissioned when we built our solar arch, so we've not used it in years. I couldn't comment on this with any conviction but in these kind of conditions it would probably be ok.
Common term here in the UK. Only come across 'wing on wing' through watching American cruisers on RU-vid. Guessing there might be other regionally different terms. 😊
Much needed reality check for serious viewers putting into perspective our RU-vid experience. Interestingly I tended to float between channels looking for pertinent subjects related to our cruising needs and planning. I was particularly interested in your plans to visit Japan as it remains an intended destination but I also now see the advantage of just viewing the sea shells and the beauty surrounding our chosen path. You both do that so well! Thank you for sharing your hobby with our community and setting a standard for others to follow!
We have no experience of it so we can't comment, but it looks like a good design and probably easier to deploy than messing around with poles and preventers.
The more I hear about people who have never shot a gun believing that it is some kind of mystical sorcery which requires decades of ‘professional” training, the more I am angered by the propaganda pushed by anti self defence media and lobbies. Firearms are not complicated. If you can manage a sailboat, you can certainly figure out how to handle, maintain, and use a firearm. It is a tube with one end what goes ‘bang”. If you are too incompetent to handle a firearm, you most certainly shouldn’t be on a boat at sea. Relying on the ‘good will” of Pirates is how people end up Dead.

On this late crowded sailing channels youtube, you guys remain on our (myself and my wife) short list of whatching for what I believe is your genuine style and fairness. Indeed some weeks if not months the greedy youtube did not notify us of any updates from your channel or even other channels. Something is very wrong with youtube and google generally. Thank you for continuing to post videos (I've definitely seen some of the weird RU-vid notification issues you brought up). You've kept me going on my refit project restoring a 40 ft. steel ketch by reminding me of the end goal (two years in right now). I hope to join you on the other side of the world in a couple years. I love all the knowledge you convey, the exciting places you visit, and that you treat the locals with the respect everyone deserves. You said that you get nothing in return, but anywhere, if you treat people with respect, they usually return it. Keep up the good work!
So sad to see that number from YT. I was hoping you had a sustainable number. I know that your friends and Patreon is much larger and makes it sustainable. But I really don’t. As someone in his fifties who would love to be doing what you are, but doesn’t have a ton of money or investments to “retire”. Love you guys and your content. Love transparency. I have other channels I’ve supported that weren’t very clear with their sponsorships. Wondering how often the contract with the sponsors limit the transparency.
I think it's always a compromise. The sponsored videos I appreciate are the ones that are clearly marked "includes sponsorship" at the beginning of the video (this is a feature on RU-vid, a box you tick to say it includes a promo), so at least you are expecting a sponsored segment. Double points for making it interesting or entertaining. Relevance is pretty important too.
Creators have been able to do this for years, but the problem is customising each post. We like to differentiate a post on Facebook vs a post on Instagram, for example.

You guys are such a good inspiration and have such nice "TV personalities". I have watched another couple (by coincidence also sailing an Oyster and also British) named "Sailing Florence". Not sure if all Brits are so nice as you guys but I like to think so. Do you guys know them or have you met them? They spent a few years near where you are during the lowdown. Not sure if you guys connected or not but they remind me of a younger version of yourselves, or at least what I imagine you were like..
Just came back from Java and Bali. Overland trip not sailing, but loved it. Lots of things to see and do, courteous and friendly people, exotic, good food, service culture, value for money etc. Sure the population density is high, the traffic slow and there is a waste problem, but I have no idea why anyone would dislike it and, if they did, why they would be vocal about it. Moreover, it's fun learning a few words in the local language and adjusting your behaviour slightly to reflect cultural norms. When you do, the obvious appreciation of the locals is priceless. Can't wait to go back.
I have watched you too for years, and if you have not, I highly recommend you read the book or listen to the audio version of the RU-vid formula. It explains a lot and your trouble is you have a low count and it may be of some aid to you
Thanks, but we're really not that interested any more. We've kept abreast of the guidelines and it's exhausting keeping up, so we now just do what WE want to do 😁
