How to Passivate Homebrew Equipment to Prevent Erosion & Rust

I picked up this SS Brewtech Chronical fermenter from my friends at Blue Dolly Brewing and it's a couple of years old so it's due for a passivation.
Typically you want to passivate new equipment you just got from the manufacturer and your equipment that's been in use for around 2 years. The reason we do this is because the stainless steel needs to have the barrier of chromium on top of it so that it doesn't rust or corrode. This will keep your equipment working for longer, very important when you're spending upwards for hundreds of dollars on stainless steel equipment!

every time i do a newby search in youtube like "brew passivation" your vids are up.. Thanks fro a great vid. I nearly have all my gear and grain ready for my first brew.... wish me luck.. just need to passivate tomorrow and do what us engineers call wet comissioning it the food and bev game to see if my 15lt of 1oC water will keep my fermentator cold at 10oC . I have leant so much form your different vlogs so a massive thank you and keep up the great work

As an cost effective alternative to Starsan, you can use Bar Keepers Friend which has oxalic acid as it's active ingredient. Just make a paste of the powder, apply and let sit for 20 minutes or so, then rinse and dry off. Be ware that it will remove etched volume markings in which case you should use Starsan or citric acid instead.
@FloraBrewing
@FloraBrewing 4 года назад
I’ll have to look into that!

@@FloraBrewing I have been researching passivation since I am a geek and my father was a metallurgical engineer and I am quite surprised at what I learned. Take a look at: modernbrewhouse.com/wiki/Passivation Turns out hot citric acid is the only reasonable solution for the home brewer since nitric is not safe to work with in a home brewing environment. Even brewing equipment manufacturers are making incorrect suggestions that phosphoric acid in Star San is effective in passivating stainless steel. Turns out you only want to remove the iron from the surface and not strip the chomimum as well.

Hi. Just to let you know, I wrecked my bathroom with Starsan. It will eat into work surfaces, and remove any chrome off items such as bath fittings, so be careful. Really enjoy your videos here in Australia. Keep up the good work.

Cool, this seems like an easier way and using less water per the size of what is being passivated. Ty. Also, I just recently moved into using star-san from iodiopher, because star San being expensive. I know there's a comment about reusing it, in which I do. To let it last, I keep a gallon or two of ratio delution using it through however many cycles of brewing, packaging etc. When the star san delution starts to be clear(un-hazy), is when its basically done.

I like using a spray bottle for it instead of soaking things to make it last longer too.

Hey, everyone. Don’t want to call anyone out, I love the channel, but this does not pass I ate stainless steel. A blend of phosphoric and nitric acid is used at the pro level. This stuff is very dangerous and can’t be used at home. The pH is generally .1 - .4 You can however use citric acid at higher temperatures but will take some know how for dilution strength. Highly recommend looking into this if it’s something you’re interested. You just won’t be getting the chromium oxide layer on your stainless with starsan.

I'm rebuilding my equipment after 3 to 4 years without brewing (though I helped some friends how to start). Now I'm back on the game and I've brewed a scotch last week. I lack of space at home too, so I'm sticking to small batchs (around 20 litres in this hemisphere). I'm using a kind-of plastic bucket as a fermentor but I was considering getting a 30 l (almost 8 US gallons) conical fermentor. I read that it was not recommended conical fermentors on such small batchs, but neither of these people were brewing my size. Now that I see yours I'd like to get your opinion wheter it makes a difference or not that much. Thank you and greetins from Argentina

Thank you, I've just purchased a brew kettle so I'm new to brewing with stainless steel. When cleaning after brew day, would chemicals used for cleaning such as pbw/bar keepers friend promote rust and need to be passivated again with star San? Or would simply rinsing off these chemicals after cleaning be enough. I'm probably over thinking it but I've just spent a lot of money on brew gear lately and I need it to last ahaha

I spent a number of years building stainless tanks... Lots of 'em. From three to thirty thousand gallons in size. I had never heard of passivating stainless steel until a happy coincidence while looking into electroplating a magnetite coating on steel. Thought I'd let you know that we don't passivate any tanks at "the factory". Not even the mirror finished ones with the pressurized heating/cooling jacket. Like I said, I had no idea what passivation was & I've built tanks for most of the big name breweries, and a few juice companies too.

@@FloraBrewing Curiosity got the best of me, as usual... Since the dangers of hexavalent chromium are regularly made clear to anyone who welds stainless steel, I thought I'd see how what I've learned about passivation relates to the less savory elements in stainless. Depending on the acid used in passivating, hexavalent chromium MAY be produced. There is an inexpensive and simple test for chromium VI... In the presence of an acidic hydrogen peroxide solution, hexavalent chromium will turn into the unstable chromium peroxide, which is dark blue, before oxidizing to trivalent chromium, which is green. That is to say, to test your particular passivating acid, scoop some of the solution used to passivate into a cup & add some hydrogen peroxide. If it turns blue then green, that's bad & you should use a different acid. Citric acid is the recommended food safe acid for passivating in the literature. Due to variations in the manufacturing process of stainless steel, it's always worth testing your brewing vessel of choice with any acid used in passivation.

I use Sodium PerCarbonate - I forget the dosage but I have it written on the container. In any case if it does not feel soapy I add some more. I believe that StarSan - which I also use only requires a contact of a few seconds but It is best to be sure. Letcherous me was kind of hoping for a more messy cleaning session :-D.
