About Me...I've over 30yrs in the Decorating trade working in the family business (set up by my father in 1965 - who's still working today and his apprentice who started with him at the age of 15 in 1966 is also still working for us too).I've served a proper apprenticeship (with papers) from leaving school in 1990, being one of the last to gain City & Guilds before it moved over to NVQ.I passed Advanced C&G in 1994 with two distinctions and one credit. One of the awards I won while at college was winning the BDA Cup (British Decorators Association) for high standards in practical work. Then I went on to do C&G 1+2 in teacher trainer where I then taught P&D and co lectured on the decorative paint effects evening course (Marbling, Graining, broken colour work) for the next 3yrs at Basford Hall College in Nottingham (UK).... the rest is history.

Hi Phil, this is great advice thanks. Even just standing the paste tub on a tool box to bring it up to a similar height as the paste table will help my back for future wallpaper jobs. I’m just starting out on my own (newb) and appreciate your videos. Plus I’m just down the road in Leicester 😁 nice to get some local advice 👍

Very well explained video Phil can I ask what paist table do you use?
@ProfessionalPainterDecorator
We've had them years.... 'X' shaped trestle with a half split hinged (down the full length) board.

Thanks Phil, was thinking of making a similar one myself like the ones painters and decorators used to make before ready-made ones came on the market.

Hi Phil, I am about to paper a room. I haven’t papered anything for years and dreading it to be honest. Your videos have been really helpful. How much do you thin down that wickes paste? It’s saying medium/heavy weight vinyl adhesives must not be used. And it’s paste the paper. Also after stripping the old paper a lot of the walls have gone back to bare plaster. Would you just size this with thinned paste or go over with something like gardz?

Hi. Clean the walls down .. either thin the tub paste down, and size.. or Gardz. Either will be fine. Are you lining it?

Wickes tub paste ... Mix the tub up, and top the tub up near the top with cold clean water, you'll find that will give you a thin mix of paste. Don't over thin it... So add a bit at a time till you feel happy. When you paste the paper... See how it feels applying it. You don't want it like water!! ;)

Perfect thank Phil, yes I will be lining the walls first. Does say to size over the lining paper as well. Just spent £40 on a felt seam roller that will only ever be used once. Great

Do you have a paste machine
@ProfessionalPainterDecorator
I don't. My dad had two about 40yrs ago, but felt they were more hassle than they were worth to use, getting the paste mix right, setting the rollers. I've not found the need for one. Most papers are paste the wall now and when I do need to paste paper it's nice to 'feel' the amount of paste that's being applied and you can regulate how much or less you need to apply at a time.

What type of laser do U use ? Did it come with the pole ?
@ProfessionalPainterDecorator
@ProfessionalPainterDecorator 2 года назад
Hi..it's a Laserliner brand. You can find them on Instagram too. You can get a pole. But I connect mine onto a long roller pole and trap it between the ceiling band floor.
