I was always told these boxes had to be used where they come into contact with air that is pushed through the house via ventilation... for example when our house was built they had to use these in the stud spaces where there was cold air returns... maybe just a states or local code thing. Using them the extra volume for wiring makes sense too... you make these jobs look sooo easy.

Ex LV guy. Electricians called us primadonnas. When I became an electrician I understood why. I usually got the job of helping them out with anything that was not monkey simple. When I was LV I rarely fixed walls. But I would lay back in drywall after screw ups or large cuts as an electrician unless GC said not too. Honestly, when I was LV I had no skills outside of a "cable runner" and termination. Everything else was beyond most of us. Now it is all about the finish work, the rest is usually easy.

@@danervin2530 probably should, but it won't really hurt anything. Some of the big box stores have a plastic 4 square. I don't ever deal with PVC boxes (commercial/industrial work) so I wouldn't know the code on that. Since this particular application is for a phone or Ethernet connection and is under 50 volts it is not required to be in a box per the National Electric Code, but your local jurisdiction may be different

@danervin2530 4 года назад
Matthew Schafer that’s what I thought, I usually just see an orange ring for low voltage and nothing behind it- or nothing at all. I get that whatever 110 receptacle you use will have a ground and, that gets screwed to the ring, just didn’t know if code dictated a separate ground to the ring since it’s also metallic (which now needs a pigtail). I think best practice around here would be to do what 0778drz110 said and use plastic throughout in order to avoid an inspector’s eyebrow.

I hope those jacks are for an analog phone system, and guessing by the four-digit number next to each, it probably is. If it's intended for Ethernet they're going to have major issues with that wiring. I only got a couple of glimpses but it was enough to tell me that the twists don't extend all the way to the connector. Even for voice, I maintain twists--it's just a best practice. Is code different in Canada, because here in the USA you don't need a box for low voltage telecom wiring. A backless box or mud ring is all that's needed to attach the faceplate and they cable can just dangle in the wall behind the sheetrock.

@plumber77mjr
@plumber77mjr 4 года назад
Sound has so many levels of relevance, I would say the mud around the box is only one piece. Wraping the back of the box or filling the internal holes and your wall insulation will give you way more sound dampening than air gap at the box, IMO

@Cajun7907 4 года назад

@@Cajun7907 Here in California, insulation isn't required in interior walls, so you never find it as most people don't spend the extra money for it. I'm not sure how that would work in more harsh climates, but here I'm sure it doesn't make a difference. I've done it on interior walls for sound damping, but other than that just on exterior walls, common (condo) walls or the wall between the home and the attached garage.

@plumber77mjr 4 года назад
@@Cajun7907 sound dampening is tricky, something I'm far from an expert on. But what I've found is that it's a "system of things" used together that work. missing one element doesn't remove just that part. Example, if there are 6-parts of sound dampening, then missing one, isn't like loosing 1/6th its more than 50%. So every little bit helps, but one thing won't make a substantial difference!
