So the original title of the video was "The best iPhone case for you" and in my mind the "FOR YOU" was the really important part! I wanted to talk about how your case is a nice way to express your personality and feel pride in something you own, because phones are so impersonal. But I think that was a bad call on my part, the nuance of "For You" wasn't clear enough. So we're changing the title in a minute. To be super clear I never meant to have the title not match the content. It just meant something different in my head.
The Verge Appreciate the clarification! For me, the original title suggested that I'd see a comparison of different iPhone cases based on different categories or criteria (Best for Protection, Best Folio Cases, Best Leather Cases, etc.) - or at least something along those lines.
Kane San Miguel That's what I thought, too. And every iPhone case is the wrong case for any phone of mine, so I assumed the video wasn't relevant to me.
I mean I guess I just felt bad for Tyler and Felicia. Also, I dunno, maybe if you IMAGINE your case smells like sunscreen I should be sorry for that :D -- Dieter
In my opinion, to get a natural patina: 1) Do not use sandpaper to scratch the leather 2) Use shoe polish instead of coconut oil 3) Use the case normally and let it wear over time
I have a nomad case and every scratch leaves a bright color behind, I fill those with coconut oil and it really gives a pure and very good looking color, not that agressive just a shade darker
as cheesy as this sounds, with a natural patina you get memories from each and every imperfection and i think that’s the beauty of letting it truly acquire a look that’s unique to only your case
2:03 Case expert chimes in with unparalleled knowledge *”If everyone has the same looking phone, every phone looks the same”* Music pauses to accentuate the profound insight
You can spray it, but what ever you do don’t sand it or use chemicals, my experience tells me that you are seriously going to ruin the leather. So just wait a month for the same effect. Would you do this to a Watch band? Exactly my point
YES! I was just thinking about back when I was in school and the iPhone 4 was the latest model. Everyone had those giant plastic bricks in their hands, and I just couldn’t understand it. Glad we’ve moved on to a better time.
I love it how he says sorry for the smell like he thinks we actually felt it not only the video series is great but for this reason Dieter is such a national treasure 😂😻
I had the Saddle Brown for my 8 Plus and the Sunset for my current Xs. Both have developed a nice patina on them I have to say if I were to do it again I’d probably just get the black case.
Aint nobody got time for that? The best part of patina is that it comes over time, and tells a story. If you force it all the magic is gone...is like with shoes or blue jeans
3 minutes spent on making the Apple leather case look old 4 minutes spent on talking to a "case expert" who may possibly have the worst taste in cases I've ever seen Gee thanks the verge!
The title doesn’t match the content, even though it was interesting. If Ashley has a channel, I’d subscribe to her just to see all of the crazy iPhone cases she’s found and tried and/or gotten reactions from, etc.
Ashley makes Verge videos on this channel all the time! You can also find her Phone Case of the Week series on the website. It usually runs on weekends: it’s my fave.
As a die hard Apple leather case fan, I love the look of your finished product but there’s a certain something about a naturally weathered case. It’s uniquely you. Where you put your fingers, the scrapes and gouges that naturally happen, etc. pro tip: those deep cuts that leave a small flap, lick your finger and wipe them back down.
The brown leather case should transform naturally not by sanding/oiling. It honestly looks worse. Just be patient and in 2 weeks it'll start looking the way you wanted it to look.
I have this case and it’s really dark and has scratches and it took about 6 months but it looks so nice now. Just let your case be and see how amazing it gets on it’s own. His case looked terrible tbh
The point is that it is not weird to destroy something to make it distinguishable from others for the sake of your own self comfort. And foremost it is about the conflict of individualism in an age of generic phone design.
Custom Vaja Grip LP case. Expensive but worth every penny. Feels great in the hand and the premium leather only gets better and better as it ages. YMMV
I have been doing this for years now, ever since the Apple has a saddle brown leather case for iPhones. There are few times even Apple employees took pictures of my cases not to mention I got so many compliments from others. FYI I didn't have to sand my case in that process. Just use coconut oil and sponge, and keep rubbing it as much as you need it.
If you want to speed up a patina on your iPhone case rub it down every so often with something with a low alcohol content, the case comes with a coating on it that prevents the patina from forming evenly and quickly…. Once it’s gone it will form a natural patina over time without sanding
+The Verge Luv your vids Dieter. As much as I like the distressed leather case you made, I'm partial to putting *skins* on my devices -- whether it'd be from Phantomskinz, Skinomi, Dbrand or Slickwraps. It takes the same amount of time to put it on, but the look imo is impeccable if done right; and does not take away from the intended industrial design. Often times slapping on a case covers the beauty of it. The issue with skins is that it's *not as easily swappable* as cases. You'd have to take the whole thing off and slap a new one depending on your taste. So I often choose something that I can withstand for the length I have of the device leaning towards *matte, carbon fiber, clear or even hemp-inspired* skins. I put on a *leather* skin on (an old) Nexus 6 -- and boy that thing was of beauty. Everyone kept asking what phone it was back in 2014.
The bad news: Mine did not come out nearly this good. Maybe iphone 12 cases are different. Maybe I just sanded differently The good news: It did not smell bad at all, it smelled WONDERFUL. Coconut oil smells great. I'm wondering what grade of grit sandpaper you used? and if you even used the 2nd one?
This may seem disgusting, but my OEM Apple brown leather case patina'ed beautifully in just a few weeks, with absolutely no odor: Since I'm a greasy Italian (American), 2 or 3 times a day I'd wipe the case across my forehead, then rub my natural greases in with my palm for a few seconds. (I just sped up the process that would normally take months from being in my hand.) I dabbed the case with Chamberlain's Leather Milk Formula #2 (Straight Cleaner) and it's simply gorgeous!!! Again, never an odor nor any blemishment of the leather, unlike using sandpaper! WTF!!!
My criteria for a case: black, extends past the camera bump, as little branding as possible, as simple as possible, covers every side. But this weathered leather look is super cool.
My leather apple case went like that after about a year, it was a darker brown to begin with though. 3.5 years old now and it’s pretty much black. That tiny lip works, still on my original screen.
I have Moshi both on my iPhone and iPad. I love my Armour for iPhone 7 because it gives me solid feel (it’s mostly metal and some rubber) without adding too much bulk. And it comes in Jet Black, like my phone. On iPad VersaCover - lots of positions and very unique design.
The Verge I have 3 favorite cases. In no order: White speck presidio grip Best Buy store brand (Insignia) clear TPU rubber case Black Otterbox Commuter. I downgraded from Defender due to the rubber sleeve stretching.
I was actually a little afraid of buying the saddle brown case but I did it anyone (because it had a 15% discount on Amazon) and now I’m just trying to let it get there through regular use. All I hope is that it won’t get discolored by blue jeans or whatever. This is, throughout the years, my third leather case. Had a Product Red one for my 5S and a black one for my 6 Plus. I actually bought the black as the second case because I didn’t like the discoloration on the red one. Now I think a little differently about it and I’m just curious how it’s gonna develop over time. I mean, it does have a color that’s similar to the original color of my favorite leather belt and that has darkened and stained a lot.
So you buy an expnsive case to destroy it. To make it personal it should reflect your daily use. Now you only have a ruined case that everybody can replicate.
My only gripe for that case is that it doesn’t fully cover the phone at the bottom. I have dozen of case for my iPhone 6s plus, protection from surface scratches is the main reason I use a case for my phone. When I choose a case, I will go for thin and light silicone case as I don’t want to add thickness to my case. I also like the case that has a matte texture to improve grip on the phone.
I think you should wait and create the patina by using it YOUR WAY! That is what makes it special. That it takes time to get there and because it is done by your personal usage.
I just grabbed a Nomad case for my Pixel 3 XL and will be doing this. Only concern is that the Nomad case has a TPU bumper, so hoping that doesnt affect anything.
Okay, The Verge, you win. Clearly I WILL watch anything you publish because you've got me hooked with great hosts and great video production. Now, what do I have to do to get more Nilay? Actually, give me more everything.
Esse vídeo me contemplou MUITO!
This was very weird to watch when they showed some commercials on the pixel 3 with the official case, since I'm wathing this video on the exact same setup :D
I love wood as a material so i just bought a case from China which was custom made just for my phone from wood. It's heavy but i love it. It's right, case should be unique and personal.
As someone who has purchased way too many cases, I have to say it’s the MOBYFL Slim Lightweight Hybrid. It’s thin and has a rigid backing to provide some drop protection and it has a nice grip texture on the sides. Worth checking out. The leather case by TOOVREN is really nice as well.
How about making it brighter? I totally get why you want to wear the yellow one, that's diarrhea colour... but I have a red case and I like it more when was bright. It got dark in a matter of a week just by staying in the jeans pocket (which were new so I think released colour)
Much more interesting: what ways are there to un-patina my brown Apple leather case? I mean, I do love a bit of patina but my case is almost BLACK now on the corners and I‘d love to have it a bit more original brownish again. Any leather experts here?
That is why people change ringtones. People either are show off/grandparent and keep default ringtone or want it to be personal and download 1 from internet.
Vegetable/plant oils can go rancid so you will want to be careful to get ones that are very refined. Some natural oils can also dampen the leather's color and natural luster, which leads to less a of beautiful patina, and more of dull stained leather. I prefer to use leather conditioner like lexol on leather. Your leather will patina wonderfully with leather conditioners and maintain that nice luster. Also polish is a terrible idea the polish since it WILL come off on your clothing.
I thought I was the only one that loved worn leather cases. Here is a tip. Use mink oil and just rub it until it gets dark. No need to sand it. I do the same with new leather shoes.
I have only 1 favourite, after having tried like 50 cases during the years.. The original Apple Leather Case in black. Simple, invisible, good looking.
Simply go to eBay type in your phone name and the letters TPU after. No one needs an Otter Box unless your doing a construction job or rock climbing. If your just an every day working person a slim case will protect your phone. Most phone's with iut a case are designed to survive a 3 foot fall. But all you need is a slim case and not an Otter Box that makes your phone feel like it's in a brick.
I don’t want a case to look personal, I want it to cover my phone so I can put it on desks and stuff. If I want to appreciate how nice the phone looks, I take the case off for the days when I don’t need it.
