Awesome!!! Thank you! That’s super helpful. The “1800’s size” is a myth though. It’s perpetuated by survivorship bias - the smallest garments are the ones that survived because they couldn’t be cut down and refashioned into other garments. Also companies like Symington kept examples of all of their corsets, and many of their competitors - in the smallest size, because storage. So any pattern taken from an extant garment is likely to be quite small. Abby Cox has a video packed with research on the subject, and Bernadette Banner has a more succinct one, with fewer statistical charts. As for the assumption that everyone was hourglass shaped, apparently that came from the expectation that you’d pad yourself out to that shape, working from whatever measurements you had. Why the hourglass being the only body shape, has survived into modern patterns, including size inclusive brands, when we haven’t been doing that for 100 years, I can’t tell you.
@WickedRainStudio

True! By 1880s-sized I meant two things. The first being people wore corsets daily, and therefore had some body modification (though certainly not as extreme as people today tend to think). The second being the unlikeliness of modern bodies easily fitting into essentially the “sample size” of the era.

ty for saying that. ive seen so much research on this lately. the idea ppl were "smaller on the waist" is such a myth. unless you are obese, u are probably the same size ur family members were in teh 1800's. not even sure im taller as when i do some real digging i think i came from vikings who were all 6 ft. tall.

I literally just spent my morning taping together corsets to get an idea of shape, but felt discouraged because I didn’t know how to scale or grade. The thumbnail with the tiny paper corset showed up on my TV as I packed up my supplies! Oh how wonderful! I had spent yesterday trying to figure out mentally how to do it and didn’t put the ideas of math and paper mockups together. Thank you!

This takes a lot of the mystery out of creating a pattern for a corset and doing this for different styles of corsets is as easy as finding the corresponding illustration, is that right? Just now getting to this after #CoCoVid and I am very grateful for a beginner-friendly demonstration of the process for visual learners. Just hopping on here to say that the info about the sizing on the 1890s and now is not really the case, people were of all the different shapes and sizes as they are today. The "myth" of the difference in eras comes from the size of the garments that survive as the ones that do are the ones that were worn the least or were better taken care of as they were more expensive. It makes sense that surviving garments are of smaller sizes and thats mostly bc they were worn by higher society or younger individuals. Working class and more everyday used garments survive less often as they were worn the most. Anyway i loved this video and just wanted to share some more info. Take care!

This is such an amazing idea! I have always preferred drafting on paper instead of digital manipulations. I can't wait to try it out. I think to maintain that super accurate silhouette you should just use the waist factor for all the lines and then pad out any difference in the bust and hips. If you are using a different factor for each line you are changing the overall shape of the garment, and slightly distorting the silhouette. The fashionable silhouette is all about the proportion of bust/waist/hips so why not maintain the same ratios they used.
@Lillyk96
@Lillyk96 4 года назад
To reduce the guess work in aligning the measurements I think it would be a good idea to give each piece a vertical center line and take the measurements from either side of it. Also a slightly larger paper model might facilitate measuring from a center line more because you aren't dealing with super tiny annoying numbers.
@WickedRainStudio
@WickedRainStudio 4 года назад
Preserving exact historical silhouettes isn’t possible if your body isn’t exactly the shape the pattern was originally made for. Forcing a body into a corset not designed to fit can cause unnecessary discomfort, especially in larger breasted people. However, my training is in theatre, not re-enactments. So my focus in historical costuming is to find ways to comfortably create historical shapes on modern bodies.
@Lillyk96
@Lillyk96 4 года назад
@@WickedRainStudio In your example the waist factor is the largest of the three so if you were to only use that measurement to enlarge that pattern you would end up with a corset that was actually too big in the bust and hips. The historical response to that would be to add padding to fill out the excess space, so I'm not saying force yourself into a too small corset more like fake it till you make it, because great-grandma was definitely faking it.

I have done this for Cirque du Soleil costumes. Use a "Power" stretch fabric, like what you would use for a girdle, and your corset should behave nicely. You can even put a heave duty zipper up the back instead of grommets if you want.

Haha! Not quite! This pattern is taken from a patent filed for this particular corset. When they filed patents, they always used a draft of the smallest size, which was the most visually pleasing for the fashion of the time. If we were to scale it up 1:1, it would fit close to the equivalent of today's size 0. While they absolutely made corsets in larger sizes, there is not a lot of documentation of those patterns to be found today.

Extant pattens that we have today are mostly from patents. Companies would only submit their smallest size to the patent office. They definitely made larger sizes, but we mostly don’t have them. Also, people today are taller. Good childhood nutrition has dramatically increased the average height of all of us. Most 19th century corset patterns are too short for the average person today.

There is no difference in the size of 18th-century people to 21st-century people...

Sorry, I realized that the way I worded this was not quite what I meant to say! I agree 100% that there is no difference between today and 18th century people! What I should have said is "1800s mindset ideal sized" since most patterns we have from that time are from their vision of the "ideal" body type. I will be more careful about my wording in the future.

Okay! Thanks for the clarification! Historical sillouettes are really cool to understand because they typically involve building out to achieve the correct shape rather than forcing the body to change.
