Paul it took me around a full year to master. Some tips I can suggest that can help you is for the real muscle up use a proper straight bar(thinner is easier), but one where you have a lot of room to hang your feet. When I started I remember practicing with monkey bars at the park that my legs can touch the ground and its curved grip, it is way harder to get up there(no momentum) and I mostly did negatives on those. But I went to another park with proper equipment and that's where I did my very first muscle up. A big thing is momentum, you have to use it to your advantage, step back and then jump forward and grab the bar and when your tipping point is reached tuck your legs back and swing your hip to match the bar and lean forward. Another thing you can do is going on a cut and lose some fat, I lost like 10 pounds and your body just feels a lot lighter and easier to control even though I'm already skinny. So after I've been able to do muscle ups, now I can even do it on the short monkey bars which I couldn't before. Sorry for the late reply, but thanks guys for the thumbs up :)

Also if you are struggling with the transition over the bar, you need to work on your triceps a lot more. Muscle up = Pullup (Back), Transition (Triceps), Dip(Chest). If you are trying with negatives, try it to last 8 seconds - focus on the part you are stuck on.

Eddie's technique is the most natural in a complete motion of a beginners muscle up. It has the knee in and a kick. Frank is very light and strong so his movement is so fluid and it's unrealistic to most beginners. I would watch this video over and over just to see Eddie's part in the video, where he does the knee in and kick, just so I can envision myself doing that same motion as a beginner and practice it. The drills and exercises by Frank are good to follow to be able to perfect muscle ups, that's after I could get at least one muscle up. :)

I don't think a movement like this should even have a tutorial. It's an explosive movement that comes out naturally. It's simply you telling your body, "I wanna get on top of the bar with one movement".

I tried this at the gym Wednesday and couldn't do it. I'll try again tomorrow after watching this. Trying to memorize the movements. Doing arches and hollows while laying on the floor to activate some of the right muscles. I'm sure I'll be back watching this video tomorrow night lol. 4:16 "...as you go down...the moment your body goes here (forward to full arch) your body wants to naturally like push you back, so you want to take advantage of that motion...". Got to memorize that!!!! No quitting.

you all can do it too! I maybe athletic but am not exceptionaly strong, my current chinup routine: 9x3 behind the neck (bar to the trapezius) 7x3 wide gripe (chin over bar) 6x3 narrow grip pullup (bar to nipples) *very strict form all, 1 min rest

I'd like to see something where Frank led the thing more than this Eddie guy - who obviously is a cross fitter. Hats off to Eddie and Crossfit though, he did get over the bar! Frank's high pull ups involve momentum swinging in front of the bar on the bottom and behind the bar on the top - it's what he was talking about when he said you rebound off the first muscle up, so when you start going backwards you explode upwards. Wish I could do either of these.

12:00 my shoulder hurt just by looking at that form of the dips. you need to keep the elbows in, or you will kill your shoulders.. frank is a great guy, but in this video is a little bit to much broscience
@tabza
@tabza 9 лет назад
RSBLMC92 Umm no. Doing straight bar dips [like that] only activates your chest more. If you have any sort of tension in your shoulders, or upper body in general, while doing them you'll be fine.
@RSBLMC92
@RSBLMC92 9 лет назад
i doesn't only activate the chest more. wether you´re have a strong upper body or not, doing the dips like that, will stress your shoulder a lot and in time you will get an shoulder injury. I had to go through that already
@tabza
@tabza 9 лет назад
RSBLMC92 In that case you were doing them wrong, with a bad form most likely. I've had no problems with my shoulders doing straight bar dips for years.
@RSBLMC92
@RSBLMC92 9 лет назад
thats what i mean. now i also have no problems with straight bar dips, because i keep the elbows in. elbows out is just wrong. the doctor told me the same
@tabza
@tabza 9 лет назад
RSBLMC92 There is no actual danger to your shoulders even if you did elbows out. The only difference is more activation on your chest rather than your triceps. Your body is not as weak as you might think. And if "the doctor" is not a gymnastics coach, I assume he doesn't know better.
