Oh, that's been an ongoing thing for 11 years now, lol. First, the brakes pulsated, right off the showroom floor - 40 miles on the clock. Interior squeaks and rattles were also never fixed under warranty - guess it's just the nature of that missing B-pillar design of the extended cab. Had lower ball joints fail at 38k, just out of warranty. Hub bearings, upper ball-joints, and one front strut failed, front diff. seals started weeping, and engine started burning oil at high rpm at 50k miles. 4x4 switch failed under warranty, but they claimed they couldn't find a problem - switch finally completely failed well out of warranty, & I replaced it. Latest oil analysis is showing high levels of iron and copper, suggesting cam bearing failure imminent. The latest issue is that I'm driving around with a "rejected" sticker (MA) since the o2, o2 heater, and EVAP monitors refuse to run, no matter how much I drive it. Just not motivated to diagnose it, since I won't be getting paid. :D Oh, then there's the rusting body ... even though this thing has been garaged since new, & undercarriage oiled for the past 6 years. Only 92k on the clock today! :(

Hello GoTech/Mike. Love your videos as always, but... One fatal flaw on your diagnostics is that you did not test for voltage drop during the actual current load on the circuit for some fuses. Ref vid at ~21:07 and continue. You are testing fuses without a high amp draw. Given the 1.5s on and 7.5s off, you have less than 50% chance (at 2s/fuse test rate) of being on the fuse during a draw point. Circuit must be energized and the Pico was trying to show you with the on for 1.5 and off for 7.5 at 33:32+ in the video. Still loved the video and much information provided, just need to add this info for your viewers. Also liked the thermal imaging concept for finding parasitic draw quickly in many cases! Also liked using the Fluke with max/min (or could be the Pico) and collect data over a long period as in the end of your video....brilliant! Worth a hat? One of the best hours I have spent on the internet period !. Thank you, looking forward to seeing more on later vehicles, say 2010 or later. Do error code pullers(?) work with Ford error codes, 2010 and onwards? Anyway keep up the great work. All the best.
@GoTechTraining
@GoTechTraining 5 лет назад
Hey Brian, thanks a ton! Appreciate the kind words. I'll do my best to get some newer stuff in. Because new cars still need to remain OBDII compliant, yes code readers will still work...but you will ONLY get the mandated codes. There are many vehicle manufacturer specific codes that those won't pull. Basically you aren't getting the full story with a cheap basic code reader. Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor
@brianpalmer8945
@brianpalmer8945 5 лет назад
Thanks Mike, I thought so, had experienced codes not pulling up. Catastrophic Failure, ECM PCM and TCM simultaneous (non communication) while in motion, with out warning !. No power assisted steering, no transmission, no engine and no emergency brake assist, all in a split second while driving in peak hour traffic and crossing bridge. Thankfully, no collision or injury. The solution being, take the vehicle to manufacturer"'s dealership/service centre. Thankfully a quick fix under warranty (replaced TCM and software up date) and a vehicle that drives better than when purchased (new,) . A horror story that ended well. As I said thanks and keep up the great work and really appreciate your quick replies.@@GoTechTraining

I wish I'd have caught this live but with my luck Eric would be seated behind me kicking my chair. I know how just having a camera on will change things and you did well in the face of adversity. One of the biggest challenges is duplicating the issue. You might have mentioned it a dozen times not to mess with things that will change with that happy state once achieved but a few dozen more won't hurt. :) It was an excellent class and I learned a bunch.
@GoTechTraining

Hey Eddie, maybe you can catch the next one!? Doing things live definitely has its own challenges...but to me, that's what makes it fun. I love being faced with the pressure and adversity. Keeps me on my toes...sometimes it's just hard to stay one step ahead. So often in this industry us technicians get hung out to dry by the OE's. Always playing catchup. Yes I did mention it a ton...I hope that helps it sink in for people :) Mike Becker Technical Services Instructor

Wiper motor control circuit board is trying to do something when it is not supposed to be doing anything. Right?
@markferraro5250
@markferraro5250 6 лет назад
Great job Mike enjoyed it if i can add a few things when you parallel the system with the jump box at the battery its congested. I use a DLC adapter that hooks to jump box along as the jump box and the DLC are good 16 hot 4 5 ground then disconnect bat term and install the ammeter in series then remove hot box from DLC. one more thing is instead of using a DVOM on each fuse and looking at numbers a mini scope AESWAVE set on the same time base as pico with the amp clamp going 0-5 amps will mimic the draw in voltage drop thank again Mike you really got me thinking
@GoTechTraining
@GoTechTraining 6 лет назад
Hey Mark, thanks!!! I'm pretty sure you don't want to be going through the DLC anymore. They are sometimes a module of their own and don't make it all the way through the grid like the battery cables do. Mike Becker, Technical Services Instructor

When you identified the wiper motor circuit and I thought about the cycling of the draw, I thought about the intermittent feature of the wipers. So that wiper motor circuit seems to be trying to operate the wiper motor while not actually being on. Right?

Mike, you asked for it... :-) Once again, I'd put the red lead on the positive side of the circuit :-) One thing I like to do using a jumper pack or second battery is to hook the jumper pack positive thru the ammeter in series to the b+ stud of the alternator and the negative just to engine or chassis ground. That way you don't have to fight possible intermittent connections at the battery cable terminals when the cables get wiggled. Just my preference. Have a great day.

Scan test and higher end vehicles (BMW) have guided test plans that monitor wakeups. Also need to keep in mind that batteries are monitor by a battery sensor if a draw is detected (BMW calls it energy diagnosis), if will shut down power relays to maintain battery, so the voltage drop on fuses may not work

Hey Fox, thank you! You're never a pain at all! I'm not sure there is a such thing as a "perfect" conductor, therefore every single item the electricity passes through will consume some of it. Hey Mike, the fuse won't show up in the thermal imager, it is the load (draw) that will show up. I've found quite a few parasitic draws with the Snap On imager. Honda and Acura are notorious for having a 140-200 mA draw from the Handsfree module and you can easily see them through the plastic cover near the rear view mirror or on the back side of the center console.
@GoTechTraining
@GoTechTraining 6 лет назад
Frank, I figured that was the case...except EVERY company selling these things have brought up fuses and seeing them on thermal...and yet here I am...still looking fro the proof. By the way, that motor was red hot through the rear hatch from the outside. Snapped a picture of it after. Good to know on that Handsfree module. I'll keep that in mind. Thanks! Hi. Instead of attaching a jump box first and then an ammeter could you just attach your ammeter only and then separate your negative lead to maintain your voltage through the system?

You can also use the pico for overnight parasitic draw monitoring. What do you do when a module keeps waking up. How do you find the problem? How do you know witch module is awakening?
@GoTechTraining
@GoTechTraining 6 лет назад
Hey Inge, sure, you can. As long as your amp clamp doesn't go to sleep! :) I wish there was a way to know which module it could be that is consistently waking up. The way I do it is....while it's acting up(awake) figure out which fuse is drawing current. This will send you down a path. From there, start isolating things in the circuit (unplug modules) until the draw disappears. But now you need to determine if the module is staying awake on its own, or if it's being awoken by something else... Mike Becker, Senior Technical Services Instructor

If it was shorted to ground on a ground side switced circuit wouldnt it jist run all the time rather then blow the fuse
@GoTechTraining
@GoTechTraining 6 лет назад
Hey Dylan, great question. There are really 2 scenarios here. Short to ground before and after the ground side switch. Of course both on the GROUND side. So, if our short to ground is before the switch what happens? And if it is after the switch, what happens? Mike Becker Technical Services Instructor
@blockbertus
@blockbertus 6 лет назад
Before the switch: Always on After Switch: No difference, except for componends which may come after that. But it would definitly NOT blow the fuse (but may cause a battery drain ;))

Hey Martin, great question!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't put enough exclamation points on that. This is defined by Kirchoff's law. Without getting into engineering talk, it basically states that current in is equal to current out....meaning that wherever you measure current in the circuit it will always be the same! I could have definitely used battery negative in this test. Mike Becker Technical Services Instructor

I wish I could take my car to you. You have way much knowledge better than any place I know in my area. Not sure if this was the reason why but I had a .144 amp draw on a 2004 Oldsmobile. I got a battery disconnect with a 15 amp fuse that retains your settings if you disconnect your battery. After installing this my voltage went down to 0.03 amp. Weirdest thing I don't know why it would do that. Don't care though at least the draw is gone ..., I will try you a full method though. After looking at my amp draw I've looked at my fuses and I had 6 mil volts after disconnecting the two solved it. Obviously I need them. So I put them back in and tried something else. Only two weirdly solve it with that strange battery disconnect fuse

So BIG debate question here. When i started as an apprentice 4 years ago working at BMW i was taught to measure parasitic draw on the ground side of battery. Today working for another shop and when one of the techs here saw me measuring battery draw on negative side he flipped out and looked at me like i had 2 heads. We had a long debate on what was right. i see that Ford service info says measure battery draw off the negative side. So is there a right and wrong? current you measure at the beginning of the circuit should be the same at the end of a circuit right? thanks for the videos.

Question. After the motor was disconnected and there was still a slight draw of current. You said it was maybe a little higher than you would like to have seen. Is it possible that the system was still not asleep fully because of the activity? Would it be worth waiting awhile to see if tgat drops some more?
@GoTechTraining
@GoTechTraining 4 года назад
Hey Mark, good question. Yes, generally you would want to wait it out and make sure it does actually drop around 50mv or lower. It's possible there could be more than one issue with the system. Because this was a live class I didn't really have the time to wait around for it. Fortunately, that's all that ended up being wrong with it! Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor
